Questioning looks beamed from Mike and I’s faces. We stared at each other, like trying to silently ask the other what was today. I direct my gaze onto the full-length window and saw the bright morning sun that gave a mini-spotlight to the two of us. I glance behind me to check at the blackboard but nothing was written on it.
“What’s today?” Mike leaning forward with an eyebrow furrowed.
“Let me give you a hint.” Alex mimicked a…
I think that’s a basketball move The class roars in a riotous laughter at Alex’s over-portrayal of shooting a hoop. Arronn, however, stares intensely at Alex’s flexed biceps with his cheeks turning red. I stared at Arronn and he looks away, blinking his eyes as he avoids my gaze.
“Let me guess, baseball?” I said in a sarcastic tone, stifling a chuckle. Even Mike tries to conceal his laughter.
Alex’s frustration is now evident. Playfully pulling his hair and exasperation written all over his face. Emitting a low growl of annoyance.
“It’s BASKETBALL!”
“Huh, didn’t notice.”
Everyone’s eyes tearing up and moaning in pain as they hold on to their laughter. It’s evident he’s passionate about it.
But, the class couldn’t hold it anymore and explosive guffawing. Echoing at the four corners of the classroom. Alex slumps his shoulders and looks down. Breaking away from Mike’s touch, I walk close to Alex.
“Hey, hey, go on, I’m listening.” Flashing a reassuring smile as the life on his face comes back.
“So, so, so…”
“Take a breath, it’s still early.”
“It’s Intramurals!”
“Intramurals?”
What kind of word is that?
A screeching of a chair makes me turn my gaze. Tara stands up from her chair, an audible chewing from the bubblegum in her mouth.
“Okay, so hear me out guys,” waving her hands to direct the attention to her, “the other class are taller, stronger, but I know y’all can do it.”
“They don’t even know what’s happening yet.” Lucia scoffs, rolling her eyes.
And in response, the class looks at Tara and laughs a little. Tara jokingly rolls her eyes.
“As I was saying,” Alex glances at Tara and a scowl forms in his face, “everyone has to pick a sport, ranging from basketball, volleyball, and chess.” He takes a moment to take a breath. “We are going to fight the other year levels,” he looks at me expectantly, “so, what’s your pick.”
The class awaits my answer.
“I call dibs on volleyball.” Mike announces, and I look at him quizzically.
“You play?”
“Yeah, come on, it’s easy, plus,” he leans in near my ear, “we have powers.” Retracting his head, he winks at me and a OH face sparks on my face.
“Me too, dibs on volleyball.” Beaming at them, I gaze back at Mike who leans in and kisses my lips. Suddenly, a plush toy gets thrown to our direction.
“GET A ROOM.” Blake shouted.
The class shares a hearty laugh, until the door opens. A man with half-circle glasses, holding a book in his hand walks to the teacher’s desk in front. The class goes back to their usual seating and directs their attention to the teacher in front.
“Good morning class, now, extra credit pop quiz. Convert 125 Fahrenheit to Kelvin.”
What a great start to a day
Everyone stares at each other. Awaiting who’s going to answer the question.
“Mike, when does the Einstein-level intelligence kick in?” I whispered.
“Right about…now.”
I feel my eyes dilate and widened. Darting my pupils from left and right, and ending with a blank sight just made of white. And after a second, I involuntarily raise my hand. The teacher calls upon me and I stood up, the chair screeching in the process.
“Three-hundred twenty-four point eight one seven.” I said rather quickly and fall back down to my seat.
A sudden wave of tiredness encumber me. I feel my mind go foggy and my head feels light. Mike shrugs his elbow at me and I look at him. He holds his tumbler at hand. I snatch the tumbler and indulge in the liquid water that refreshes my soul. Moaning in delight that wasn’t too loud. Now I felt okay.
“Again, it’s your first time, your body’s still adjusting.” Mike murmurs.
The teacher displays a shocked expression and claps his hand. The class stares at me in amazement and awe.
“Very good,” he looks at his watch, “and in a short amount of time too, wow.”
I simply smiled and grabbed a notebook on my bag. I feel like we’re going to have a lesson today so I click my pen to life.
“Now, take down some notes, as we are about to start our lesson.” The teacher announces.
He starts to lecture about temperature, kinetic energy, and what not. Hearing the word energy makes me jerk a little and Mike notices it, earning a slight chuckle from him. I listen intently on the lesson and jot down notes that moves incredible speed. But, I try to match the lesson with this power that I have. I control The Three Dogmas that utilize my energy to either harm or protect people, or manipulate time to my liking
What energy?
Don’t tell me the Einstein-level intellect is making me an existentialist
Wait, what word is that?
My mind is a circus right now with thought after thought rushing out of my mind. I inhale…and then exhale. Trying to control the rushing ideas that flow in my head.
“And that concludes our lesson.”
A perplexed expression evident on my face. I look down on my notes to see I have written, word per word, the lesson of our teacher. It’s like I made an entire transcript of the lesson.
Cool
I place the notebook back on bag as the teacher says his goodbyes to us. Two more subjects stand in between our first break. A normal reaction to this would be disappointed or any look just not excitement. But I am feeling that right now. This is weird to the next level. Well, let’s see how these goes.
Breezing through the two subjects, I have made another transcript of the lesson. This is going to be handy, I am sure of it. As soon as the teacher left the room, the silence turns into tumultuous chatter from every direction of the classroom.
“Hey.” A small voice interrupting my train of unstoppable thoughts.
I glance behind me to see Arronn clutching a notebook on his chest.
“Did you get the last thing the teacher said awhile ago?”
I see his gaze turn to my notebook. His eyes widen and tries to scratch it. He snatches the notebook from my desk, and his eyes reflects the words on the page.
“This is a word-by-word…” He looks at me in disbelief and goes back at the notebook. “Can I borrow this?”
A grin forms on my mouth.
See, useful
I nod and he beams with gratitude and scurries back to his seat, grabbing his pencil case housing an assortment of pens. I chuckle and turn my gaze to look at Mike, but he isn’t there.
“Want anything to eat?”
Fuck! Ow!
I hit my elbow on the armrest from surprise. I turn my back to see Mike looking at me expectantly, a smile plastered on his face.
“You have to stop doing that.”
“Meh, you look cute when you’re scared”
My cheeks heat up instantly and I look away for a moment. A low growl escaping my lips as I attempt to punch him.
“You missed.”
“Shut up.” I mischievously roll my eyes at him and shook my head.
“Okay then, I’m gonna buy something from downstairs, I love you.” He plants a kiss on my lips, and I smile in delight.
He’s so handsome
As Mike exits the room, Alex storms to my direction along with Arronn nestling on his arm, their footsteps bellowing.
“Do you have a place where we can train?” Alex asked.
A figurative light bulb appears on my head.
“I might know a place, but, I have to stop by somewhere first.”
