Friends, Until the End

“A new addition!” I didn’t know I raised my voice and everyone was staring at me.  I glared at mother who had a perplexed expression on her face. “Alex almost died!” I said through grit teeth so that the others won’t hear.  “And that isn’t stopping unless I give you up!” Mom snapped.  “You?! Give me up? Where were you even!”  She opens her mouth, then closes it immediately, like she hesitated to reply. She closed her eyes and let out a sigh, resting her hand on my shoulder.  “Okay, I’m sorry. I should’ve been there.” She looks down and purses her lip.  “Just…” Words fail me and I just turned around to face my classmates all with expectant expressions.  “What…happened.” Arronn said with a raspy voice.  “Yeah what was that! I remembered we were covered in a blue thing, guns and stuff, it was traumatizing.” Tara feigned crying and held her hand to her heart with Hollie and Charlotte hugging her.  “And I remember my stomach hurting like something stabbed me.” Alex asks through pleading eyes.  You were impaled with a translucent, red katana twisted until you bled to almost your death. Oh! And did you know your boyfriend over here has the same powers as us and we don’t even know!  I can’t. My voice felt like it was clipped with a huge lump that I can’t gulp down. Everyone stared at me, awaiting an answer. I don’t want them roped in to my mess. What if the bandage didn’t work? What if me, Mike, or Arronn isn’t there? Thoughts cloud my voice and I can’t tell them what it is. I bite my lip to keep myself from talking.  “Hey.” A small, little voice made me look down. It was Demi clutching her book. “Are you okay?”  I nod but tears pricked my eyes, I try to keep it down but it hurts in my throat. I can’t.  “BUT THAT WAS AWESOME WHAT ARRONN DID.” Blake shouts from across the room.  A mix reply of agreement filled the room.  “LIKE THOSE SHIELD, I SAW THE BULLET JUST,” he places a finger an inch away from his eyes, “IT WAS RIGHT HERE!”  “Oooh! Ooh! And when all those men just fell from somewhere,” Demi giddy like a schoolgirl, “that was cool!”  Don’t you get it! All of you might die because of us!  “Hey,” Lucia walks to me and place her hand on my shoulder, “remember what we said the last, last time we had a buffet?”  “Before the…”  “Before everything, we said,” turning around to show our friends, “we’ll be all together, no matter what.” She flashes a small smile that only I can see.  “YEAH!” Our friends said in unison with a beaming look on their face.  Then, everyone bursts into laughter, while my mother just chuckled.  “But…Alex, you almost got killed because of me.” My voice lowering in volume with each word.  “And I’m still alive today! Come on, this buff f**k getting killed.” He flexes his bicep.  “Arronn! You perv!” The girls slap Arronn on the arm and giggled.  “Hey,” Alex grips my wrist, “you are the only family I have, I can’t be losing all of you, so I need to know who I have to face and what to expect.”  I gulp and stare at him.  A loud clasping of hands echoes inside the clinic, everyone directing to the source: my mother.  “C,” she looks at me, “they deserve to know, and what Alex said.”  “They’ve already identified them by now, it’s no use to distance yourself since they can use them as a…” She didn’t continue her sentence but I immediately knew what she was supposed to say.  Hostages.  Shivers ran through my whole body. I release a sigh. “Okay.”  The whole class erupted in cheers. “THAT’S OUR PRESIDENT!” Blake shouts.  “Now, let’s go to the headquarters.” Mother smiles and snaps her fingers.  The empty wall suddenly parts, a cold breeze hitting our faces and smoke trails in its wake.  “Come.” Mom walks in through the wall.  Alex removes the sticky things on his chest, then heads on toward to Arronn to help him stand up.  “Go on, president.” Lucia from behind me whispers as we all gathered around the wall.  “There’s no going back to your normal lives once you know what we are.” I look at all of them. Their smiles lit up the room, faces filled with bravery, determination, I can’t place my finger on what but they feel energized of some sort.  I smile at them. “Well then, shall we?”  We all head inside, the cold room earning a ‘Brrrr’ from my friends as they laughed. The headquarters was the same as before, all but a lavender scent that lingered in my nose.  As my friends all finished laughing, they saw the grandness of the headquarters.  “Woooow” All of them said with an amused expression on their faces as their heads swing from side to side to admire the place.  “This is where I was right Mike?” Arronn asked.  Mike nods and head to the bar, the holograph servant holding a metal tray appeared.  “WOAH!” Blake shouted, pushing through us to sit next to Mike.  Mike laughs and explains to Blake what to do.  “I WANT A…,” Blake scratches his chin, “ICED TEA!”  “Iced tea coming right up.” The hologram smiles with a signature robotic voice.  Blake giggled in anticipation, and I look at Mike who likes like a daddy with his kid, giving him a suggestive eyebrow. He curses at me and laughs.  “OH MY GOD! THE SEATS! YAAAS!” Hollie squealed as they sat at one of the booths.  “Let them adjust for awhile, have a feel of the room.” Mom whispers to me as she heads on to the array of rooms at the end of the headquarters.  “You can get a drink guys, just seat on one of the bar stools and a hologram will serve you.” I announce.  “Cool!” Tara stands up, inviting the other girls to go grab a drink.  I look at all of them, a smile on my face. My friends. Even when they saw Alex being…that, they just laughed through it. But, that’s something bothering me. Any normal person would walk away, scared of dying, but my friends. An idea hit me.  No, don’t tell me.  My eyes widen at the thought that I have to shake away.
