CHAPTER 1: THE RETURN
The city looked the same. That was the first thing Adrian Kane noticed as the sleek black Rolls-Royce glided to a stop beneath the towering glass structure of Kane Industries. The streets were still crowded with restless ambition, and the air still carried the scent of luxury and deceit. Neon reflections shimmered across the car’s polished hood, and for a moment, Adrian simply sat there, staring through the tinted window like a man facing the ghost of his former life. Three years ago, he had left this city broken: humiliated, bleeding, and erased. Now, he had returned to reclaim it. “Sir, we’re here,” his driver announced softly. Adrian nodded, his expression unreadable. He adjusted the cuff of his dark tailored suit and stepped out, his polished shoes meeting the pavement with quiet authority. Every movement he made was deliberate, controlled ,the behavior of someone who had learned the price of weakness and vowed never to pay it again. The building rose above him like a monument to power. Kane Industries. His father’s empire. The legacy he had been denied, then nearly killed for. He inhaled deeply, letting the weight of that truth settle in his chest. Once, he had stood outside these same doors wearing nothing but hope and a second-hand jacket. He had dreamed of working here, of proving himself worthy not for the company, but for the woman who had pushed him toward it. Selene Hart. Her name burned like a scar he could never fully heal. The memory of her betrayal came rushing back, vivid and merciless. He had loved her with the foolish, wholehearted devotion of a man who had nothing else. She had been his light in a world of uncertainty, the reason he worked, the reason he endured. But when power called her name, she had chosen it over him without hesitation. That choice had nearly destroyed him. Adrian walked through the revolving glass doors, the soft echo of his footsteps swallowed by the spacious lobby. The interior gleamed with wealth, marble floors, towering chandeliers, and an atmosphere that whispered status. The staff members behind the reception desk straightened immediately, sensing the arrival of someone important. But Adrian’s attention wasn’t on them. It was on her. Selene stood near the main desk, reviewing documents with quiet concentration. Her dark hair fell gracefully over her shoulders, and her posture carried the same confidence he remembered elegant, composed, and heartbreakingly familiar. She looked older, more refined, but still undeniably the woman who had once held his entire world in her hands. She hadn’t changed Adrian’s jaw tightened. For a split second, something inside him threatened to soften: a painful echo of what he had once felt. But he pushed it away. Love had no place in the man he had become. She lifted her head at that moment, and their eyes met. Selene’s gaze passed over him without recognition, as though he were just another executive entering the building. To her, Adrian Kane was nothing more than a stranger in an expensive suit. That suited him perfectly. His assistant, a sharp-eyed woman named Miranda, approached at once. “Mr. Kane, the board is waiting for you upstairs. The announcement will be made in ten minutes.” “Good,” Adrian replied, his voice calm and low. He took one last look at Selene before following Miranda toward the elevators. The irony of it all amused him. The woman who had destroyed his life now worked for the very empire he controlled and she had no idea. Not yet. The elevator doors closed with a soft hiss, cutting off the view of the lobby and of Selene’s face. Adrian leaned against the polished metal wall, letting out a slow breath. This was only the beginning. *** Three years earlier, Adrian had been a man with nothing but dreams. He still remembered the night Selene had rejected him , the way the words had shattered him in front of an audience hungry for drama. “You’re kind, Adrian,” she had said softly, avoiding his eyes. “But kindness can’t build a future. I need stability, and you… you can’t give me that.” Behind her stood Marcus Vale: wealthy, powerful, and already claiming her as if Adrian had never existed. The humiliation had been unbearable. The heartbreak, even worse. That same night, Adrian had been attacked and left for dead in the outskirts of the city. He had been meant to disappear : a mistake erased, a liability silenced. But he survived. And when he awoke in a hospital bed under a different name, the truth about his lineage was revealed. He was not a nobody. He was the lost heir of Kane Industries ,the son they had hidden and nearly murdered to protect their power. From that moment on, Adrian’s life changed. He didn’t come back for love. He came back for revenge. *** The boardroom was filled with tension. Executives sat around the long glass table, whispering among themselves as Adrian entered. His presence immediately silenced the room. He took the seat at the head of the table, his posture relaxed but commanding. “Gentlemen,” he began smoothly, “thank you for waiting.” An older man cleared his throat. “We’ve reviewed your credentials, Mr. Kane. If what you claim is true, this company rightfully belongs to you. But the transition will not be easy.” “I didn’t come here for easy,” Adrian replied. “I came for mine.” The confidence in his voice unsettled them. He could see it in their faces, the fear of losing control, of being exposed. It was exactly what he wanted. Miranda placed a tablet in front of him. “Sir, Selene Hart is scheduled to work directly under the executive management division starting tomorrow. She’s one of the company’s best analysts.” “Perfect,” Adrian murmured. He hid his satisfaction behind a faint smile. “Announce it,” he said. *** Back in the lobby, Selene had no idea her life was about to change. She felt restless, distracted by something she couldn’t quite explain. The man who had entered earlier : there had been something about him, something familiar, though she couldn’t place it. His presence lingered in her mind like a shadow she couldn’t shake. The loudspeaker above crackled to life. “Attention, staff and executives. Please welcome the new CEO of Kane Industries, Mr. Adrian Kane.” Applause filled the lobby as Adrian stepped forward from the elevator, his expression poised and unreadable. Selene’s heart skipped. Adrian Kane. The name sounded painfully familiar. He scanned the crowd once, his eyes settling on her for a brief, deliberate second. Selene felt the weight of that stare, cold and assessing. Then he turned away. For the first time in years, Selene felt uneasy. She didn’t know why. He didn’t know that the man standing before her was the same Adrian she had once loved, the same man she had betrayed. And she certainly didn’t know that he had returned to destroy everything she held dear. *** That night, Adrian stood alone in his penthouse overlooking the city lights. From this height, the world looked small and controllable. The same city that had once cast him aside now lay at his feet, waiting for his next move. He held an old photograph in his hand: him and Selene from years ago, smiling under a pale moonlit sky. He stared at it for a long moment. Then he let it fall into the fire. “Your betrayal made me,” he whispered. “Now, it will end you.” The flames rose, swallowing the last trace of the man he used to be. And as the ashes curled into nothingness, Adrian Kane began writing the next chapter of Selene Hart’s fate. The game has finally begun. To be continued...
