Chapter 1: The Call That ended it all
The fluorescent lights of Harmon & Associates had a particular kind of cruelty to them, the sort that drained color from faces and made every hour feel like three. Elena Reed had been staring at the same spreadsheet for forty minutes, the numbers blurring into a soft, meaningless haze, when her phone buzzed against the edge of her desk.
She almost ignored it.
It was 4:47 p.m. on a Thursday, and the unspoken rule at Harmon & Associates was that you did not move, breathe too loudly, or exist too visibly until the clock struck five. Her supervisor, Mr. Dalton, had eyes like a hawk and the disposition of a man who had never once in his life let anything slide. Elena had learned that lesson three months into the job and had not forgotten it since.
But the number on the screen stopped her cold. Aunt Patricia?
Aunt Patricia never called. She was a woman of texts and voice notes, brief and to the point, dinner Sunday? or check on your mother, never a direct call unless something had gone wrong. Elena's stomach dropped before she even pressed the green button.
Hello?
Elena! Her aunt's voice was strange, thin and stretched, like fabric pulled too tight before it tears. Elena, baby, you need to come to St. Matthew's right now.
The spreadsheet vanished from Elena's mind entirely.
What happened? She was already reaching for her bag, muscle memory taking over while her brain scrambled to catch up. Aunt Patricia, what happened?
It's your father. A pause. The kind of pause that holds entire worlds inside it. He had a stroke, Elena. They took him in an ambulance about few hours ago. We're all here. You need to come.
The phone call lasted forty-three seconds. Elena knew this because she checked the screen afterward, standing in the narrow aisle between the rows of desks, her coat half-on and her heart hammering so loudly she was certain the woman two desks over could hear it.
St. Matthew's, Come now!
She glanced toward Mr. Dalton's glass-walled office at the far end of the floor. He was on the phone himself, turned away from the window, one hand gesturing at the air in front of him the way he did when he was trying to convince someone of something. It was 4:49 p.m. Eleven minutes to closing. Eleven minutes that felt, in this moment, as laughable as a lifetime.
No one will notice, she told herself. It's practically five anyway.
She walked to the elevator with measured steps, the way you walk when you're trying not to run, when the running is happening entirely inside your chest. The doors slid open, swallowed her whole, and then she was in the lobby, and then she was outside, and the cold November air of New York City hit her face like an open palm.
She ran.
The subway was its usual indifferent self — packed with bodies and noise, smelling of rain and steel and the particular exhaustion of a city that never truly rests. Elena stood gripping the overhead rail, her knuckles pale, her eyes fixed on nothing. Around her, people scrolled phones, read paperbacks, slept with their heads tipped back. The world continued, utterly unbothered, as though her father had not collapsed somewhere across the city with his brain flooding and his body failing.
She wanted to scream.
Instead she counted stops. Fourteen blocks. Seven blocks. Three.
She came up from underground into the gray afternoon and broke into a run the moment her feet hit the pavement, her bag slapping against her hip, her breath making small white clouds in the cold. St. Matthew's Hospital rose ahead of her, a tall, sand-colored building with a red emergency sign glowing above the entrance like a wound.
The automatic doors sighed open and she was inside, blinking under the fluorescent lights that were somehow even harsher here than at the office, the kind of lights designed to show everything without mercy. The smell hit her immediately antiseptic and something beneath it, something older and more human that hospitals could never quite scrub away no matter how hard they tried.
Elena!
Her cousin Marcus was the first to spot her, rising from a row of plastic chairs in the waiting area near the reception desk. He was twenty-four, two years younger than Elena, and he looked like he'd aged a decade in an afternoon, his eyes red-rimmed, his jaw tight. He crossed the room in four strides and grabbed her arm.
They took him into surgery about two hours ago, he said, low and urgent. We've been waiting.
Elena let him pull her toward the waiting area, where the rest of the family had gathered in that particular way families do in hospitals close but not quite touching, orbiting each other with a helpless, gravitational grief. Her mother, Diane, sat in the middle chair with both hands pressed flat against her thighs, staring at the floor. She was still wearing her work blouse, the pale blue one she wore on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and something about that small detail that she had not had time to change, that the day had simply swallowed her whole made Elena's throat tighten unbearably.
Aunt Patricia stood behind Diane with one hand resting on her sister's shoulder. She met Elena's eyes across the room and something passed between them, something wordless but heavy and Elena understood that whatever her aunt had known on the phone, she had not said all of it.
Mom! Elena crouched in front of her mother, took both her hands. They were cold. Mom, I'm here.
Diane Reed looked up, and Elena saw with a small shock that her mother looked old in a way she had never noticed before or perhaps had refused to notice. The lines around her eyes, the gray threading through her hair that she usually dyed away every six weeks. She looked like a woman who had been holding something enormous up for a very long time and had just, in the last few hours, begun to feel the weight of it.
He was just eating breakfast, her mother said. Her voice was very calm, which was somehow worse than tears would have been. He made eggs. He always makes eggs on Thursdays, you know that. And then he said he had a headache and I told him to take something for it and She stopped. Pressed her lips together. And then he was on the floor.
Elena squeezed her mother's hands and said nothing, because there was nothing to say to that. There was no sentence that fit inside that kind of moment. She just held on.
The waiting room continued around them a television mounted in the corner murmured a daytime talk show at a volume too low to hear properly, a child across the room played a game on a tablet, a man in the far corner slept with a jacket over his face. Time moved the way it always does in hospitals: strangely, in lurches, the minutes sometimes crawling and sometimes vanishing entirely without accounting for themselves.
Elena got coffee from the machine down the hall. It tasted like hot water that had been briefly introduced to a coffee bean and then separated, but she drank it anyway, standing by the window watching ambulances come and go in the bay below. She texted her roommate, Jade. She texted no one at work, and felt a distant, flickering guilt about that, which she extinguished almost immediately.
Her phone said 6:22 p.m. when the doctor came.
There is a particular way doctors walk when they are carrying bad news, a measured slowness, a careful neutrality of expression that is itself a kind of expression, the face arranged into something that is neither kind nor unkind but simply prepared.
It happened automatically, all of them rising from their chairs like a congregation, as though the moment demanded it.
The doctor stopped in front of them. His name tag read 'Dr. Hargrove' in small black letters.
Mrs Reed, he said. I'm very sorry to have kept you waiting.
How is he? Her mother's voice was barely above a whisper. How is my husband?
Dr. Hargrove's expression shifted just fractionally, just enough and in that fraction of a second Elena saw everything she needed to see. Her hand found her cousin Marcus's arm without her meaning it to, fingers closing around his sleeve.
We did everything we could, the doctor said. His voice was practiced and gentle and utterly devastating. The hemorrhage was severe and it was a grade five subarachnoid bleed, which means there was significant bleeding around the brain. We took him into surgery as soon as he was stabilized, but, He paused, and in that pause lived the remainder of the sentence, the part he hadn't said yet, the part they already knew. I'm very sorry, we lost him.
The words landed in the waiting room like something dropped from a great height.
For a moment one long, suspended, terrible moment nothing happened. The television murmured. The child across the room made a sound of triumph at his game.
And then Diane Reed made a sound that Elena had never heard from her mother before and hoped to God she would never hear again a low, broken sound that was less a sob than a collapse, the sound of something structural giving way and Elena was across the room before she knew she'd moved, her arms around her mother's shoulders, both of them sinking into the chair together as the rest of the family closed in.
Aunt Patricia was crying openly now, her hand over her mouth. Marcus had turned away, his shoulders shaking. Her younger sister Chloe, who Elena hadn't even noticed sitting in the corner, let out a wail that rang off the hard hospital walls and made the stranger with the jacket over his face sit up suddenly, blinking.
Elena did not cry. Not yet. She held her mother and pressed her face into her mother's hair and felt the sobs moving through Diane's body like tremors, and she breathed in the familiar smell of her mother's shampoo lavender, always lavender, since Elena was four years old and she kept herself very still, the way you do when you are the one thing left standing and everything depends on you not falling.
We did everything we could.
Her father had made eggs that morning.
He had a headache and now he was gone?
She held her mother tighter and stared at the wall above the nurse's station, where a poster about hand-washing hung slightly crooked on its nail, and she thought, this is what the rest of my life looks like now.
