Prologue
Opal's heart pounds in her chest as she darts through the forest. She can’t stop, can’t slow down, can’t think. Her mind is a whirlwind of thoughts and her feet a blur of motion. She knows they’re nearby. She hears them sprinting along the forest floor, feels their presence closing in around her, she can even smell them. She is being followed, no, hunted. The night air cools and blows past her swift form, carrying the earthy scents of damp pine and wet dirt. But there’s another scent, even more enticing, filling the air and setting the blood of three powerful Alphas on fire—the musky allure of their mate. She would be lying if she said she wasn’t scared shitless, yet the thrill of the chase is intoxicating. Addicting. A part of her, the shifter part, revels in the primal game that’s being played. But she also knows that once they catch her, everything will change. Everything will be over, and something new will begin. Her human side is trying to avoid anything new. The full moon bathes the old forest in silvery-blue moonlight, painting the gnarled trunks of the trees and the mossy ground with shadows that do nothing to hide her snow-white coat. She briefly slows and stops next to a fallen tree, shifting her weight from one paw to another, her rabbit form trembling with anticipation and nerves as she flattens herself against the dead tree trunk. She pauses for a moment, her ears twitching this way and that as she listens to the sounds of the night. She knows they’re close. She can feel them deep in her bones. Crunch. A twig snaps to her right. She takes off again, making sharp turns, her powerful legs propelling her over thick grass and fallen branches. She lands nimbly, barely breaking stride as she continues to run. But the Alphas are relentless. They move as one, their cooperation unwavering, their determination steadfast. Not far behind her, three shadows move with lethal grace, their eyes glowing with predatory intensity. Rook, Soren, and Kai—Alphas at Wildwood Academy—are on the prowl. They’ve caught her scent in the air, and it drives them to the brink of madness. Her fur stands on end, betraying her hiding spot. She can feel her energy leaving her with each passing moment, having now run for almost an hour. She can’t believe what’s happened and how it has upended her whole life within just a few minutes. She is going to be claimed by not one, but three Alphas. The thought sends shivers of both fear and desire down her spine. She can’t help it. The thought of being claimed by all of them makes her worry for her own safety, but she can’t ignore the fire that erupts in her core at the thought. She’s not sure if she’ll die from that pleasure or from the pain of possibly becoming their next meal. Closing her eyes, she takes a deep breath to center herself before bounding deeper into the forest, leaving behind an irresistible trail of pheromones. Rook, Soren, and Kai are wolf shifters, alphas to the largest pack in North America—the Wildwood Pack. The same Wildwoods that founded Wildwood Academy 115 years ago. They are a wealthy and powerful wolf bloodline that has dominated the shifter world for generations. Opal doesn’t expect these three to be any different. They are no strangers to prey shifters like her. She is sure they spend a fair amount of time silently stalking prey in the dead of night for sport. How else would they be restlessly hunting her after an hour? Across a clearing, Rook leaps, landing lightly on the soft bed of fallen leaves, his powerful legs absorbing the impact with ease. His massive form is a blend of raw power and silent strength, easily making him the most frightening. He moves with purpose, driven by an instinctual need to protect and claim. The beast within him stirs, but tonight it is need that leads the hunt, guided by the irresistible smell of Opal. His golden eyes scan the surrounding woods, searching for any sign of movement. His body hums with energy as anticipation courses through his veins like wildfire. His massive wolf form is coiled tight, ready to pounce at any moment. Hunting is in their blood, and their mate is just ahead; the most delicious thing he’s ever smelled. Soren and Kai take up flanking positions on either side of him, their eyes flowing with a predator's intensity as they too catch Opal’s intoxicating scent. The night is alive with sound; the soft crunch of leaves underpinned by the rhythmic chirping of crickets and the distant hooting of an owl, and somewhere near, the soft heartbeat of a small, frightened animal drums a pitiful tune. It was a silent night by all accounts, but her heartbeat might as well be a drum. Rook’s tongue flicks out from his muzzle, tasting the air greedily as he closes in on her trail. A small rustle to his far left makes his eyes land directly on Opal’s small white body frozen from the intensity of his stare. Rook’s amber eyes lock onto Opal's rabbit form, his heart racing in his chest. She is a white beacon in the black night. Desire shoots down to his c**k and the hair on his nape stands up. He can't help but reveal a toothy grin as he inhales the scent of his mate. Look what we have here, boys. A lost little bunny just begging to be eaten. A low growl rumbles in Soren's throat as he moves silently through the undergrowth not far away, his brown fur gleaming in the moonlight as he navigates around trees and shrubs alike. He has never known anything like this primal need before now; it consumes him entirely. His green eyes narrow sharply as he catches sight of Opal ahead. Soren's nostrils flare, his wolf instincts taking over. He growls low in his throat, unable to contain his desire for this elusive creature. You can't keep running from this, Opal. We know you feel it too. Kai’s grey wolf form emerges from the shadows, a toothy smile playing on his lips, his intense stare never wavering. I must admit, she's quite the runner. Her scent is delicious, and that little tremble she has... it only makes me want her more. His tongue swipes over his teeth. His blue eyes blaze bright in the darkness. All of their eyes do, and she is finding it hard to not be intimidated. Opal is frozen in fear, her large red eyes meeting theirs. Back off! I don't belong to anyone. You can't just claim me because of some bond. Kai chuckles softly, stepping forward. Oh yes, we can, bunny baby. We're here to do just that. You can fight it all you want, but the bond is there. It's real and it's not going away. You see, you aren’t going anywhere tonight but back to our place. The words hit her like a physical blow, knocking the air out of her lungs. Her mind races with fear and confusion as she tries to maintain her composure. You think you can just come into my life and dictate how things are going to be? I have my own life, my own plans. Rook steps closer, his gaze locked on hers. Your plans don't matter when it comes to the mate bond. We're connected now. Our lives are intertwined. A shiver runs down her spine at their words, but she can't deny the pull she feels towards them. She takes a tentative step backward, eager to put some air between them. But their eyes burn with an intense desire that sends shivers down her spine. You’re lying. I know shifters can only have one mate. Soren joins Kai in front of her, his voice deep and commanding. Not always. Opal's resolve wavers, the intensity of their words and the undeniable pull of the bond making it hard to think clearly. And the damn smell of them is filling her head with foggy, lustful thoughts. She takes a deep breath, trying to steady herself. And if I don't? If I refuse to accept this bond? W-what do you plan to do with me? They've been searching for her, believing she is their mate. She feels that a simple no wouldn’t be enough to deter them. Her heart pounds in her chest as she realizes the gravity of the situation, unsure if this is a dream or a nightmare come to life. The question seems to ignite Rook’s bubbling need because he growls with primal lust, his massive c**k awakening as he stalks closer to Opal. His wolf provides him with added inches in all the right places, making him even more irresistible. Kai and Soren flank her on either side, the scent of their desire mixed with Opal's sweet scent, creating a heady aphrodisiac that leaves them all breathless. Kai's smile widens, his blue eyes darkening with desire. First, we'll show you what it means to be f****d by an Alpha. He leans in close, brushing his muzzle against her ear. Then, we'll take turns marking and claiming your body until you're begging for more. Opal's breath hitches at Kai's words, and she feels a warmth spread through her core. Soren got closer to her with each passing moment until his tongue began to lick her fur, cleaning the dirt and grass off her. Kai steps up next to Soren, his eyes blazing with desire as he runs his tongue down Opal's back in tandem with Soren's. The heat from their touch sends shivers down her spine, causing an involuntary whimper to escape her lips. Soren’s voice rumbles deep in his chest when he speaks, f**k. You smell so sweet, like wildflowers and honey. And something else...something uniquely yours. I can’t wait to taste you. He leans in closer, his warm breath tickling her ear as he whispers words that make her tremble inside. Opal feels her resolve crumbling, the magnetic pull of the bond becoming almost unbearable. She is drawn to them, despite her defiance, despite her fear. I'll stay, she says, her voice trembling but strong. But don't think for a second that I’m just going to roll over and show you all my belly. Rook’s smile is both triumphant and tender. We wouldn't have it any other way, bunny baby. There is a moment of tense silence as the alphas transform into their human forms. Opal is mesmerized as she watches them; it is like seeing magic happen right before her eyes as their muscles shift and fur melts away, revealing toned bodies covered in scars and tattoos. Together, they are a formidable sight. Their shared features—a strong jawline, high cheekbones, and an intense gaze—mark them as related, but each has his own unique presence. Different hair and eye colors, different forms of confidence, dominance, and an undeniable allure that is impossible to ignore. They are the embodiment of Alpha power, each one a force to be reckoned with. Opal tried desperately hard to keep her eyes locked on theirs and not at their large c***s which were erect and just begging to be touched. She gulped at the overwhelming show of skin. Opal can feel the Alphas' eyes on her, their intense gazes burning with anticipation and desire as they wait for her to shift. Taking a deep breath, she closes her eyes and allows the familiar sensation of shifting to wash over her. Her bones begin to realign, muscles contracting and expanding as her form changes. Fur retracts into her skin, and her ears shorten, resuming their human shape. The transformation is smooth and quick, leaving her standing naked in the moonlit clearing. As she opens her eyes, she sees their reactions. Kai's blue eyes darken with unrestrained hunger, his lips parting slightly as he takes in every curve of her body. Soren clenches his jaw, filled with both awe and raw desire, his nostrils flaring as he absorbs her scent. Rook's golden eyes, once so composed, are now wide with admiration, his usual predatory confidence momentarily giving way to genuine appreciation. He growls low in his chest, a sign of obvious appreciation for his mate’s beauty. The moonlight bathes Opal's skin in a soft, ethereal glow, highlighting the gentle curves and graceful lines of her form. Her silky white hair cascades down her back, a shimmering veil that only partially conceals her nudity. She stands before them, vulnerable yet powerful, her heart pounding with a mix of fear and excitement. In that moment, surrounded by the three Alphas, Opal feels a connection that is both terrifying and exhilarating. Rook’s gaze softens, his hand reaching out to gently brush a strand of hair from her face. The moment his fingers touch her skin, a surge of electricity shoots through her, stars dancing behind her eyes, and the world suddenly feels wobbly beneath her feet. The mate bond is overwhelming her senses beyond control. Her knees buckle, and she stumbles forward. Rook's eyes widen with concern as he catches her, his strong arms wrapping around her to keep her from falling. “Opal!” The world around her begins to blur, the edges of her vision darkening as the overwhelming sensations of the bond crash over her like a tidal wave. Her body feels like it’s on fire, the connection to her mates igniting something deep within her. “I... I can't...” she manages to say before everything goes black. As her body goes limp in Rook's arms, the trio exchange worried glances. They’ve heard about this happening with prey shifters experiencing the mate bond for the first time, but seeing it firsthand is something else entirely. The bond is more intense than any of them had anticipated. "We need to get her back home," Kai says, his voice urgent. "She needs to rest." Soren nods, his eyes filled with concern as he looks at Opal's unconscious form. "At least she’s agreed not to run away again. We can let her sleep in my room.” “Dying to have her scent on your sheets, huh Sor? Can’t say I blame you.” Rook chuckles as he gently lifts Opal into his arms, cradling her against his chest as they make their way back to their territory. He puts his nose to the crown of her head and takes a deep breath, sighing as her sweet smell fills his nose. The bond between them is undeniable, that much they know. They’ve found their mate, and the thought of claiming her is the only thing keeping them sane at that moment.
