Jake couldn't understand what he had said or done to make her believe he had a mate... and a human at that! Sure, there were others who tried to have a normal relationship with a human. But had they ever tried to make love their girlfriends? Have they tried to keep the wolf inside when being with the one they loved? No, they all knew better than that. They knew not to even try being with a human... Only, he hadn't know and as much as he thought the past was buried it still had a way to haunt him, as he remembered her screams when he tried... for the firsr time... to make love to her... bu the wolf wanted to mark her as well.... her screams as she saw the wolf coming out.... he could still hear her....
As he came back to himself after his wolf scratched him bloody from inside his skin he saw her... and her scent was more fear than anything else. 'Oh, no. Please don't!' he prayed and wanted nothing more than to go to her to embrace her and hold her in his arms, to smell her so seductive scent at her throat. But that would only make her even more afraid of him. His wolf demanded that he fixed that, that he explained, So she would never again be afraid of him.
"Lisa, Lisa please look at me? Lisa, I'm sorry. So, sorry! I didn't mean to... I should have explained, I, shouldn't accept your gift. I just... followed the protocol and... please Lisa, will you look at me?" he trie to explain and watched with the wolf inside him panicking as she raised her head slowly, so very slowly.
"I'm the one to apologize. I shouldn't have said anything. Please forgive me. I'll...I have to go now." she said and got up from her chair ready to go.
"Lisa, wait!" he almost growled, the wolf didn't want her to leave and neither did his human half, he was a step away from her the next second and she was afraid of him. The sweet vanilla scent of her skin was almost overwhelmed by the sour scent of fear. "Please, I just, I only want to talk to you. It's been far too long. Please don't go yet.!" he would beg if he had to. Both human and wolf were prepared to beg her to give them one more chance.
He knew she was debating the safety of her staying but a few seconds later that to him were like years she nodded, "I'll stay, for that cup of coffee." she said and he smiled timidly.
"Thank you. Please go sit down in the living room. I'll be with you in aminute with your coffee." he said and watched her moving away as his wolf was howling for him to hold her in his arms and never let her go.
'What the heck am i still doing here?' she asked herself, 'Meeting our Mate!' was her wolf's reply. She sighed internally, no need letting him know she was torn inside. She was sitting on the edge of his sofa hoping that she could remember to act normal while waiting for him to get the cups of coffee and talk to her. 'What could he possibly want to talk about?' but to that there was no answer. 'If only Alex was here...' she thought once again, she sould have convinced Anna to get him to come, Sara wouldn't have any problem with that, probably... But Alex was back home and she was here, alone, in a Lone Alpha's cabin... 'What have i been thinking?'
Just as she was actually thinking about making an exit he brought a tray with the two cups and a small plate with two pieces of chocolate cake, her wolf was impressed to say the least, 'He must really like us!' but her human side was a bit more cautious, 'Noone is that good! He just wants something and knows it will be hard to get it!' she told the wolf, feeling her retreating. She smiled up at him trying to hide her thoughts. She took a careful sip and closed her eyes savoring the aroma and taste of it. It was fragranced with vanilla and some other citrus flavour that somehow resembled his scent.
"So, do you like it here?" he asked and she looked at him from the corner of her eye. His voice had that ragged quality that could bring pleasure just as well as pain to whoever he wanted. The wolf was ever present in that voice, staking his claimi to his territory.
"Yes." she answered concentrating on the coffee, "It's nice, and the forest.. it's tempting you to run in it..." she didn't really know why she said that. Her wolf could be playing games again, but she found that she did mean every word.
"I am glad you think so." he said smiling, his lips tempting her to have a taste, kiss him, "I try to keep it safe for everyone. At least since I got here last winter." She responded with a smile, there was nothing to say really, not to a wolf who was alone for almost a year, better to stay silent.. She must not be doing such a good job on keeping her face pleasant because he tried to apologize again. "Lisa, I am really sorry for earlier. I never meant to scare you. I, I thought I had made it clear that, i am alone here.
"I shouldn't have said anything. It is me that should apologize." 'I should never have come here in the first place' she thought and moved a bit to place the cup on the table. And she would have made even her grandmother proud, not letting the cup tinkle on the wood, if only he hadn't chosen that same moment to touch the scar on her right hand. The cup was dropped and the coffee was spilled all over the hardwood floor.
She stood up ready to go, "I am so sorry, I am so clumsy sometimes." a total lie, Jake could smell it in the air around him. She could never be clumsy. "Don't move, I'll clean up." he tried to keep his tone flat but knew the order was issued. She stayed standing as he went back to kitchen and brought some paper towels to clean up. She was feeling awkward, he could tell and he sympathized, he felt the same. "Um, the bathroom is on the right, next to the bedroom." he said and she walked fast, trying not to run.
'Good Job! Make her leave before she has to!' his wolf was pissed with him, well that made two of them. But seeing the scar he couldn't help himself but wonder how it happened. When and why? She didn't look the type to inflict self-injury. So what else could it be?
