Adrian met Mia’s mother.
It went badly.
Her mother liked him immediately.
Too immediately.
“You’re handsome.”
“Mom!”
“What? It’s true.”
Adrian smiled politely.
Mia wanted to disappear.
Then her mother asked:
“Are you serious about my daughter?”
Adrian looked at Mia.
“Yes.”
Mia nearly choked.
Her mother smiled.
“Good.”
Later, Mia whispered:
“You didn’t have to answer that.”
“I wanted to.”
She looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because I am.”
—THE FIRST KISS
They kissed in the rain.
It wasn’t planned.
They had argued about whether Mia should accept a major brand partnership.
She wanted to refuse.
Adrian wanted her to consider it.
“You’re afraid of success,” he said.
“And you’re afraid of failure.”
They stared at each other.
Both were right.
Then Adrian stepped closer.
“I’m tired of pretending I don’t want this.”
Mia whispered:
“Then stop pretending.”
He kissed her.
Everything else disappeared.
When they separated, Mia smiled.
“Finally.”
“Finally?”
“I’ve been waiting.”
He laughed.
“So have I.”
