CHAPTER 10: The Invitation The morning felt heavier than usual. Not because anything was wrong. But because something was no longer simple. Hardin Smith noticed it as soon as he stepped into class. Anna Fred was already there. But today, she was not alone. Rose was leaning closer than usual, speaking quickly while Anna listened with a calm expression that was starting to feel familiar. And behind them, Alexander was already talking loudly as if he owned the space. Hardin sat down slowly by the window. Same place. But not the same feeling. “You are staring again,” Alexander said immediately. “I am not,” Hardin replied. Alexander smiled. “You are just slower at admitting it now.” Hardin ignored him. But his eyes still moved. Briefly. Toward Anna. Then away. Rose noticed immediately. She leaned toward Anna. “He is doing it again.” Anna paused. “Doing what?” Rose smiled. “Thinking too much without speaking.” Anna blinked slightly. “That is normal for him.” Rose shook her head. “No. That is not normal. That is him changing.” Anna did not respond. But her fingers tightened slightly around her pen. Later that day, classes moved as usual. Lectures. Notes. Quiet distractions hidden inside loud rooms. But something kept shifting in small ways. Looks that lasted a second longer than before. Silences that felt slightly different. When the final bell approached, Rose suddenly turned to Anna. “Come somewhere with me today.” Anna looked up. “Where?” Rose smiled. “You will see.” Anna hesitated. Then nodded slowly. “Okay.” Across the room, Lizzy was watching again. Minah leaned closer. “She is always taking her somewhere.” Lizzy did not look away. “She is getting closer to her,” Lizzy said. Minah blinked. “And Hardin?” Lizzy’s eyes shifted slightly. “He is getting worse.” “Worse?” Minah asked. Lizzy did not explain. But her expression tightened. Emily sat nearby. Silent. Still. But her eyes followed Hardin like always. And when he stood up at the end of class, she quickly looked away. Like she had seen something she was not supposed to understand. Outside the classroom, Rose grabbed Anna’s hand lightly. “Let’s go,” she said. Anna followed. Not resisting. Not questioning much. Just curious. Hardin noticed them leaving. But this time, he did not immediately turn away. Alexander noticed that too. “You are really watching now,” he said. Hardin replied quietly. “It is nothing.” Alexander smiled. “You keep saying that.” The place Rose brought Anna to was not far from school. A quiet rooftop space connected to a small café building. Not crowded. Not loud. Just open. The wind moved softly through the space. Anna stepped in slowly. “This is… nice.” Rose smiled proudly. “I know.” Anna looked around. “It feels different from everywhere else,” she said softly. Rose leaned on the railing. “That is the point.” A pause. Then she turned slightly. “You like it, right?” Anna nodded. “Yes.” Across the street below, Hardin stood at a distance with Alexander. He was not supposed to be there. Or maybe he just ended up there. Alexander followed his gaze. “You came all the way just to look at a rooftop?” Hardin did not answer. Because Anna was there. And she was smiling slightly as Rose spoke. That was enough to make him stay still. “You should go up,” Alexander said. Hardin glanced at him. “No.” Alexander smirked. “Of course not.” A pause. Then Alexander added more seriously, “You are starting to move differently around her.” Hardin looked away. “I am not.” But even he did not sound fully convinced. On the rooftop, Anna turned slightly toward Rose. “Thank you for today,” she said softly. Rose smiled. “You are easier to bring out than I thought.” Anna gave a small, quiet smile. “Maybe I just needed a reason.” Below them, Hardin finally turned away. But not immediately. And that small delay meant more than he wanted it to. That night, both of them returned home. Two different houses. Two different silences. But the same thought followed them again. And this time, it stayed longer than before.
