Chapter 17

Chapter 17 I rushed through the empty corridors to get to the right chemistry room. I had gone to my old chemistry class, which was halfway across the school to my new one. Finally I reached the right room. "Miss Cole?" asked the teacher. It was a young man, probably in his mid-twenties, with caramel coloured hair and intense blue eyes. He was the kind of teacher girls would get a crush on. "You're late. Detention after school," he said. I gave him a half shrug - I didn't even have a social life to care about a detention. I walked around the class room looking for am empty seat and I almost groaned when I saw it was by Josh Cooper. "I was hoping I could get Mr Cooper to sit by himself to avoid distraction, but it looks like the class is even again," I sat next to Josh, who grinned when he saw me. "Miss Mathews," he teased. "Or is it gonna' be Mrs Bradshaw?" I gave him an evil glare, but his note book caught my eye. It showed that his current grade was a C+. "So, Josh, it surprises me that you are in this set, even though your grades are impossibly low," I said, which wiped his smug grin out of his face. He also narrowed his eyes. "But maybe if you paid the school, they might put your grades up as well as your classes," "How do you know?" he hissed. "No one knows!" "A little birdie told me," I said, enjoying the fact that I finally had power over him. "Ok, you don't tell anyone, I won't tell anyone-" he said. "Tell anyone what exactly?" interrupted the teacher again. His name tag read Mr Sutton. I grew to hate him. "Ok, since both of you seem to enjoy your conversation more than class, I'll see you both at detention after school today," he said This time the class sniggered. We both rolled our eyes and did our work to avoid a further detention. ♚♔♚♔♚♔♚♔♚♔♚♔♚♔♚♔ I walked into the chemistry room the second time that day. When I went in I saw that Josh was already in his seat and there were a couple of other kids as well. Another sight that surprised me was Bridgit, sitting right in front of the teacher's desk. I had thought she was the good girl, who only hears about detentions in horror stories. I walked up to her and sat by her. "Hey," I whispered. "No talking," said Mr Sutton. I muttered an apology and started the worksheet. I felt a tap on my back and I saw that Josh had thrown me a note. It had a phone number on it and read 'Save my ass from boredom - text me' I got my phone out from my pocket and saved his number and sent him a 'Hi' text. I wouldn't have done it in a different situation, but since I was bored too, and there was no talking, I decided to talk to him. His reply came back instantly 'Thanks for getting me a detention' it read. Suddenly a hand grabbed my phone. "No texting in detention," said Mr Sutton and he gave me a cool glare. Then he looked at my phone and read where the last message had come from and grabbed Josh's phone. "You can get your phones back at the office tomorrow," he said. ************ I was in my room, listening to music when a knock came. To be honest I wasn't really listening to Far East Movement going on about sober girls acting drunk. I was thinking about Cory and how I had ditched him and about how Mark didn't reconginze me and how Nathan hated me. I shouted for the person to come in and I saw it was Bridgit. With my phone in her hand. "How did you get that?" I asked her. "Teacher's pet," she shrugged. I saw that I had a missed from Mark. "Thanks," I said. "Well, I have to go now," she said and disappeared out of my room. I unplugged my earphones and called Mark back. "Hey lil sis!" he answered. "I haven't heard from you since ages!" I wasn't really mad at him for not recognizing me in the party. I hadn't actually seen him in two years and I was wearing a lot of makeup so I must have been unrecognizable. But it hurt me and I knew that it would hurt him too, if he knew. I decided not to mention it. "Yeah," I said. "Been busy" "Mom said that you were at the party," he said. "I didn't see you," This hit me in the gut again. I had secretly been hoping that maybe he did go home and think about me and maybe he remembered bumping into me and them...then I remembered his ring. "Hey Mark," I said. "You and that girl...are you engaged?" He was silent for a while and then spoke softly. "Sandy...that girl in the red dress...it was you wasn't it?" he asked me. My silence answered his question. "I bumped into you and you were staring at my ring and...oh my god...I didn't recognize you!" "No...you didn't..." I whispered. "God, you've grown so much. When I saw you last you were fifteen, Sandy. You were quiet and never wore much make up and...oh my god!" he said. The atmosphere between us was tense now. We were both pretty hurt. "So you and that girl...you're engaged?" I asked him. "Yeah, I can't believe you noticed and no one else did!" he said, happy that I had changed the subject. "What's her name?" I asked. It was pretty strange that I didn't know the name of my future sister-in-law. "Eliza," he said. "Eliza Maguire. You'll love her when you meet her...she's amazing!" "Wow...you're getting married and everything now!" I said to him him. "How's your job?" Mark was working as a book publisher and I had to say he earned a lot. "Yeah it's good. I got a promotion last week," he said. "How about you, how's school?" "It's good," I replied. I really didn't have much to say about school. Or my life. "Santana, you're a senior now. You've got college and everything coming up...do you know what you're going to do in college?" he asked. This was a sensitive subject for me. Ever since Sam died, it had taken my future away. I really had no idea what was going to happen. "I don't' know...I might go to NYU or something," I said. "Anyway..." I scrambled my brain to change the topic. "How's everyone at home?" I asked him. "Oh well...Luke's, well, he wants to take the company now and well...," he trailed off. "Stacy's changed a lot...she's even seeing a kid and she's only what, thirteen? And Brandon is still soccer mad," "Wow...they're growing up," I said. "What about that guy you came with?" asked Mark "Isn't he like the heir to a big company? Is he treating you well? Are you sure he's not after just..." "Oh Cory's just a friend," Cory was actually the first friend I had made here. I thought back to the day we had after the party. It was true; I had not thought of Sam once that day. Cory made me forget everything painful, but when he needed me most, I walked out. I realized I couldn't lose a friend like him. "Mark...I got to go," I said and hung up. I put my jacket on and went to find Cory.
