Chapter 16
"Boys suck!" said Bridgit. Today the girl was wearing a polka dot skirt, a bright red blazer and orange tights and a golden belt, half the size of her torso The orange stuff went well with her hair.
"If a guy does ever actually come up to me and asks me out, that would be the day the world starts hating Lady Gaga, 'cause both these things will never happen!" she went on. We were both in her room, watching Mean Girls. Although it was nothing like high school, it was a funny film. All the way through it, I wished that my life was like hers: the only complications were whether she would get the guy she liked.
"So you've never had a boyfriend before?" I asked her.
"Oh yeah, I had one ages ago, but he dumped me and I was like I'm never talking to boys again," she replied. "But that was way before I started wearing bright clothes,"
Maybe bright clothes was an understatement.
"Did you know that half the popular girls in this school are mad at you!" she continued. "They all hate you!"
This was news to me.
"They hate me?" I asked her.
"Oh yeah! Especially Brittany Healy! Oh gosh, that girl hates you!" said Bridgit.
"Why?" I asked her.
"Because Cory Brandon took you out!" she replied in a 'duh' tone. This left me confused -how had they known about me and Cory going to the party together.
"I mean, I know Cory is like a nerd and everything, but he is rich. And Brittany dated him a year ago, but she messed it up and she knows that Cory won't ever go out with her. She always wants what she doesn't have so she hates anyone who ever gets their hands on Cory. The Brandons are like, so big in business nowadays," she ranted. "And his brother Nathan Bradshaw is also targeted by most girls, but apparently, he's really scary and all he wants is s*x. Everytime a party like that pops up, it's always the two brothers that are chased after. Oh yeah and Josh Cooper. All the girls were mad about Josh, but he went with his cousin, I think!"
"Wow," I said. "And how do you know all this?"
She reached under her bed and pulled out a magazine. It was like those gossip magazines, and the front page news was the party. Although it was a business occasion, it also had some links to fashion. And what I saw nearly stopped my heart. Right on the front page there was a picture of my family and a caption saying 'Where's Mathews' Girl?' I yanked the magazine out of Bridgits hands and went on the single page spread. The article went on about how I didn't turn up in the party and it also mentioned about what happened with Connor. There was also a photo of me, but it was taken way back when I was 15 so thankfully, I couldn't be recognized.
"Oh yeah, the Mathews, they're like number one," said Bridgit. "Their son is pretty hot," She waited for me to respond, but I was reading the article. Then she realized.
"You're the Mathews girl," she said. "Oh my god! It's you. Santana Mathews, not Santana Cole!"
"Yeah, that's me," I said and then realized that maybe she would tell everyone. "Look, it's a secret, don't tell anyone, OK, never tell anyone. This is between you and me only, got it?"
She looked a little surprised by my intensity. Usually I don't talk or say much in front of her.
"O-okay," she said. "I won't tell anyone, but why is it a secret?"
I told her the fake story of me being kidnapped and trying to avoid it. She belived it without question.

The next day, I went to see my guidance councillor to tell her that I was finding my classes too easy. The woman was one of those ladies with big buns and big boobs. She was wearing a lot of fake tan and had dark eyebrows, but she was caring and understanding.
"Well, Santana," she said, looking at the computer. "You are already in all the higher classes, apart from chemistry,"
This surprised me, because this was a pretty high end school and the classes weren't that hard at all.
"You are a senior, so I can't move you up a grade, but I can make you take a test to move up on chemistry," she said. In the end I took the test, which was fairly simple. She made me take the test on the computer so it could be marked straight away on an automated system. In the end I got an A and she changed my schedule so I had Chemistry with a different class. Just as I was about to leave, she called me and asked me something.
"Hey, I see you have really good grades, so I was wondering...would you like to be a tutor?" she asked me.
"A tutor?" I asked her. "Would it help me in any way?" I wasn't about to give up my free time to try and make a thick guy understand photosynthesis or anything.
"It would help you get into a good college," she said. I reluctantly agreed and she looked into the computer to get me a person to tutor.
"Well, it looks like Josh Cooper needs to get his C's into A's," she said and I looked onto his report card. It was true, he was getting a C in every subject, which was pretty bad.
"Wait," I said, a thought crossing my mind. "He's in all my classes apart from Chemistry. That means he's in top set,"
The woman made a face. "I shouldn't be telling you this but...as a tutor I guess it's alright for you to know." I could tell that it was definitely not alright for student tutors to know about Josh Cooper's secret, but she was the sort of woman who couldn't resist a gossip.
"Know what?" I asked her, aware of the little smile pulling up my lips. I was about to find out something dirty on Josh.
"His parents want him to get into a good college, so they pay extra to put him into the higher classes. When colleges ask about his classes, it would look good,"
Bingo!
