Chapter 20
Recap
"If nothings going on between you and Nathan...Sandy Cole...will you go out with me?" asked Cory.
My pulse froze. I never thought of Cory anything more than my friend. But I had lied to him, and I couldn't lie to him again. I had to tell him the truth.
"No," I whispered. It was harsh and cold, but it was me.
"No?" he asked, his voice shaking. Maybe he thought that I would say yes. I knew that if I got close to Cory, he wasn't the type of guy to break my heart. I knew that Cory doesn't
ask out any girls. I was probably the first. But I said no.
"Can I ask...why?" he said. I couldn't make the same mistake that I made with Nathan again. And Cory was...well Cory. He deserved the truth and an explanation. I couldn't leave like Connor had left me.
"The last time I was in a relationship... it didn't work out well, Cory. You have to understand that I'm not ready to get into anything yet, and I don't think I ever will be," I told him. I was on the verge of tears again.
"Sandy...I know how you feel, because I've been through the same thing. Last year I went out with this girl...Brittany, and I thought I loved her until she cheated. You're the only girl since I've wanted to go out with," he pleaded. "It took me a lot to get up and ask you and... The other night, when you called yourself Brittany, I realized what I felt for you,"
I took all of this in. Cory wanted me, but I still had no idea what I felt for him. I could feel the tears coming again.
"Cory I..." I stopped, because I knew that whatever I had to say would hurt him even more and he didn't deserve that.
"Santana, I know you're not ready yet but I'll be there for you, every step of the way," said Cory. "You don't have to go out with me now, but you should know how I feel about you. Just tell me when you're ready,"
He stood up and left me. It was the second time that night someone had left me cold and alone. I didn't know about my feelings towards Cory, but I knew definitely that I had hurt him. Maybe it was because I never thought of him more than a friend. I sat by myself for a while, then wiped my cheeks and decided to go back inside. I had come to this school thinking that I could escape the drama, but it had worsened.
I was walking along the empty corridor, when I bumped into Josh.
"Wow, you look horrible," he said, smirking.
I realized that my hair must have been messed up from the wind outside and my clothes were probably crumpled from being on Nathan's bedroom floor. And my eyes were probably red and sore.
"Hey, have you been crying?" he asked, his eyes frowning.
"No," I snapped. I really wasn't in the mood for Josh's idioticness.
"You have been crying," he accused.
"Josh, just piss off, ok?" I snapped at him. "I don't wanna put up with you right now,"
I looked at him and saw that I had hurt him. I had hurt a lot of people.
"I was just asking," he said and went off to the opposite direction.
I could easily just make up with him...
"Wait," I called out and he stopped and turned. "I was in a cranky mood,"
He joined me again and we walked along in a silence.
"I'm your new tutor," I told him.
"Wha- how- you?" he asked me. "Oh, that's how you know about the grades and stuff,"
I nodded. "Yeah, you're stuck with me," I grinned.
"Oh great!" he said sarcastically.
Then he suddenly stopped in his tracks.
"What is it now?" I asked him.
"Shh" he whispered. "D'you hear that?"
I could hear some talking and giggling going on in the corridor to our left. Josh turned left and I followed him. The voices became more clear and I recognized a male and female voice.
"Shut up, Dave!" giggled the female voice.
"Yeah, whatever," said the male voice. They were quiet for a while, and I realized they were kissing.
"Not here, you know that," said the male voice.
"Yeah, sorry. You know I love you Dave," said the female voice.
"I love you too," and there was more silence. Josh looked at me and made a face. We couldn't see what was going on because it was dark, and the classroom was closed.
"Just a few more months, now, babe," said the male voice.
Josh looked at me again then whispered, "Oh yeah, Dave baby," I couldn't help but laugh and the couple heard us.
"Who's that?" asked the male voice, and Josh grabbed my arm and we both ran. When we were outside, we laughed like little kids.
"Hey," said Josh. "That was right outside Mr Asshole Sutton's classroom,"
We both then had the image of Mr Sutton making out with a kid and burst out laughing again. Mr Sutton was young and hot looking, but we imagined if his secret got out.
Josh was in fits of laughter, and his laugh was the kind of laugh that was addictive. I couldn't stop laughing either. I realized that after such a bad day, Josh had made me laugh again.
"Hey, Josh," I said. "Thanks,"
His brows met at confusion.
"For what?" he asked.
"For not asking,"
