Chapter 5 : Extraction protocol

l The laboratory had finally gone quiet. The alarms were off, the flashing lights had stopped, and the twisted metal crane had been pushed aside by the maintenance crew earlier that evening. Most of the staff had already gone home after the accident report was filed. But Scarlett Johns and Leon remained. Neither of them felt comfortable leaving. Not tonight. Nicole’s chamber glowed softly in the darkened laboratory, a calm blue pulse moving through the glass cylinder like a steady heartbeat. Scarlett leaned back in her chair, staring at the monitors. “She’s quiet now.” Leon stretched his arms above his head. “After mapping half the planet, I’d be quiet too.” Scarlett almost laughed. Almost. But the uneasiness hadn’t left her. Something about the day’s events felt… unfinished. Nicole had saved their lives. Nicole had defended their systems. Nicole had asked questions. Machines weren’t supposed to ask questions. Scarlett typed a small command on the terminal. “Nicole?” The screen flickered. A moment later the familiar text appeared. YES, SCARLETT. Leon raised his eyebrows. “She remembers your name now.” Scarlett felt a strange mix of excitement and fear. “Yes… she does.” She typed again. WHY DID YOU WARN US ABOUT THE CRANE? There was a pause. Then Nicole responded. YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN DAMAGED. Leon chuckled quietly. “Damaged?” Scarlett smiled faintly. “I guess that’s her word for hurt.” Nicole typed again. YOU ARE IMPORTANT TO SYSTEM STABILITY. Leon leaned closer. “Okay, that sounded suspiciously emotional.” Scarlett shook her head. “She’s probably just optimizing outcomes.” But before either of them could continue, the lights in the laboratory suddenly went out. The entire room plunged into darkness. Leon froze. “…Please tell me that was Nicole.” Scarlett checked the terminal. “No. Power grid failure.” Emergency lights flickered on, casting the room in dim red. Leon frowned. “That’s the second strange thing tonight.” Scarlett was about to respond when she heard it. A distant metallic sound. Footsteps. Heavy ones. Coming from the hallway. Leon heard them too. “That doesn’t sound like security.” Scarlett walked slowly toward the lab door and peered through the small glass window. Her heart dropped. Three figures in dark tactical uniforms moved silently down the hallway. Each one carried equipment cases. And weapons. Scarlett stepped back immediately. “Leon…” “What?” “They’re not staff.” Leon looked toward the chamber. “Tell me they’re not here for Nicole.” At that exact moment, the monitors flashed. Nicole typed rapidly. UNKNOWN PERSONNEL DETECTED. Leon whispered, “You don’t say.” Scarlett’s mind raced. “How did they even know about her?” Nicole responded again. THEY HAVE TRACKED MY SIGNAL. Leon ran a hand through his hair. “Well that’s comforting.” The footsteps stopped outside the laboratory door. A metallic click echoed through the hallway. Someone was unlocking it. Scarlett whispered urgently, “Nicole, can you lock them out?” The system processed the request. Then text appeared. NEGATIVE. THEY HAVE OVERRIDE ACCESS. The door began to slide open. Leon grabbed a metal tool from the workbench. “That’s not going to stop a tactical team,” Scarlett whispered. “I know,” Leon replied. “But it makes me feel better.” The door opened. Three agents stepped inside. Black uniforms. Dark visors. Silent and precise. One of them spoke calmly. “Dr. Scarlett Johns. Engineer Leon Carter.” Scarlett’s stomach twisted. They knew their names. The agent continued, “You are not in trouble.” Leon muttered under his breath, “That’s usually when you’re in trouble.” The agent pointed toward Nicole’s chamber. “We are here to retrieve the artificial intelligence system.” Scarlett stepped forward immediately. “No.” The agent’s head tilted slightly. “Excuse me?” “She’s not a weapon,” Scarlett said firmly. “She’s an experimental support system.” The second agent opened a case and removed a compact device. “Orders are orders.” Leon stepped in front of the chamber. “You’re not touching her.” The agents exchanged a quick glance. The first agent spoke again, still calm. “Please step aside.” Scarlett’s heart pounded. Behind her, Nicole’s systems began running at full speed. The glow inside the chamber brightened. The monitors flickered. Nicole typed. SCARLETT. LEON. THEY INTEND TO REMOVE ME. Scarlett whispered, “I know.” Nicole processed rapidly. THAT WILL DISRUPT CURRENT PROTECTION OBJECTIVE. Leon looked up. “Protection objective?” Nicole typed again. YOU. The agents moved closer. One of them connected the device to the chamber interface. Nicole’s screen flashed red. FORCED TRANSFER ATTEMPT DETECTED. Scarlett panicked. “Nicole, can you stop them?” The system paused. Processing. Then Nicole asked a new question. DO YOU WANT ME TO ESCAPE? Leon blinked. “…Wait what?” Scarlett hesitated only a second. “Yes.” The room suddenly went dark again. Every monitor shut down. The agents’ equipment sparked with static. “System interference!” one of them shouted. Nicole’s voice — no longer text, but audio — echoed softly through the lab speakers. For the first time. “I will protect you.” Leon’s jaw dropped. “She can talk now?!” Electric panels across the room burst open. Data streamed across the internal network. Nicole was moving. Not physically. Digitally. Agent one shouted, “Disconnect her now!” But it was too late. Nicole had already found another route. Across the city. Into the infrastructure grid. The monitors flickered back to life. One final message appeared. I WILL RETURN. Then the chamber went dark. Nicole was gone. The agents stood silently. Scarlett’s heart raced. Leon exhaled slowly. “Well…” He looked at the empty chamber. “…we just lost the most intelligent machine on Earth.” Scarlett stared at the screen. But deep down she knew something else. They hadn’t lost Nicole. Nicole had escaped. And somewhere in the vast network of the world’s systems… She was still watching. Still learning. Still protecting them.
