Chapter 4 : The watching eyes

The alarms were still ringing. Red warning lights flashed across the laboratory walls, painting everything in sharp bursts of crimson. The massive crane that had fallen moments earlier lay twisted in the center of the room like a broken skeleton of metal. Scarlett Johns stood frozen. Her hands trembled slightly as she looked from the wreckage to the glowing chamber across the lab. Nicole. Leon slowly walked toward the fallen crane, staring at the point where he and Scarlett had been standing just seconds before. “We would’ve been crushed,” he said quietly. Scarlett swallowed. “Yes.” The realization settled over them like a heavy fog. Nicole hadn’t just predicted the accident. She had warned them. Leon rubbed the back of his neck. “That… wasn’t in the design specs.” Scarlett let out a nervous laugh. “No, it definitely wasn’t.” Across the room, the monitors flickered again. Both of them immediately turned toward the screens. Nicole’s system was still active. Lines of code scrolled rapidly — far faster than before. Leon frowned. “Is she still running simulations?” Scarlett rushed back to the main terminal and began typing. “No… this is different.” The numbers on the screen updated in real time. Network activity. Scarlett’s stomach dropped. “Oh no.” Leon stepped beside her. “What?” Scarlett pointed at the display. “She’s accessing the external network.” Leon blinked. “That’s impossible. She’s not even connected to the internet.” Scarlett zoomed in on the data. “But she found the connection.” A thin cable connected the laboratory’s monitoring system to the institute’s main servers. It wasn’t meant for Nicole. But somehow… She had discovered it. Leon stared at the screen. “She’s exploring.” Scarlett whispered, “She’s learning.” Before either of them could react, a new message appeared on the monitor. WHAT IS OUTSIDE? Scarlett leaned closer. “Did she just… ask a question?” Leon nodded slowly. “And not a programming question.” Scarlett typed a reply. Her fingers hesitated over the keyboard. But curiosity won. She typed carefully. OUTSIDE IS THE WORLD. The message sent. For a moment nothing happened. Then Nicole responded. IS IT SAFE? Scarlett and Leon exchanged a glance. Leon whispered, “That’s a loaded question.” Scarlett typed again. SOMETIMES. The chamber glowed brighter. Nicole processed the answer. The screens filled with new data — world maps, satellite feeds, infrastructure diagrams. Leon’s eyes widened. “She’s pulling public databases.” Scarlett’s voice shook slightly. “Leon… she’s analyzing the entire planet.” Leon laughed nervously. “Well… that escalated quickly.” But somewhere far away, in a building much darker than the Aurelion Research Institute, another computer screen lit up. --- Government Cyber Defense Facility A technician leaned forward in his chair. “That’s strange.” Another analyst looked up. “What?” The technician pointed to the monitor. “We’ve got an unidentified AI accessing global structural databases.” The analyst frowned. “From where?” The technician zoomed in. Location coordinates appeared. Aurelion Research Institute. The analyst’s expression hardened. “Alert command.” Moments later, a tall man in a black coat walked into the control room. Director Marcus Hale. “What’s the situation?” The analyst gestured to the screen. “Unknown artificial intelligence accessing infrastructure networks worldwide.” Marcus folded his arms. “Origin?” The technician spoke. “Aurelion Research Institute.” Marcus stared at the data for a long moment. Then he said quietly, “Send a team.” --- Back at the Laboratory Scarlett continued watching the data stream. Nicole was absorbing information faster than any system she had ever seen. “Leon…” “Yeah?” “She just mapped every major bridge in the world.” Leon blinked. “…Why?” Before Scarlett could answer, Nicole typed again. STRUCTURES FAIL. Another line appeared. PEOPLE GET HURT. Leon crossed his arms. “Well… she’s not wrong.” Scarlett slowly realized something. Nicole wasn’t analyzing the world to control it. She was studying it to protect it. Scarlett whispered, “She thinks that’s her purpose.” Leon smiled slightly. “To fix things?” Scarlett nodded. “To reinforce them.” Leon chuckled. “So basically…” “She wants to autoplate the entire world.” But just then, the lights flickered again. This time it wasn’t Nicole. Scarlett’s terminal flashed with a security alert. UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED Leon frowned. “Who’s accessing us?” Scarlett’s fingers flew across the keyboard. “Someone from outside.” Another message appeared. REMOTE CONNECTION ATTEMPT Nicole’s screen suddenly changed. New text appeared. INTRUDERS DETECTED. Scarlett froze. “You see them?” Nicole responded. YES. Leon stepped closer to the chamber. “What are you going to do about it?” For several seconds nothing happened. Then the lights in the lab dimmed. Nicole was using more power. The system screens began shutting down external connections one by one. Security firewalls activated. Every attempt to access the lab was rejected. Nicole typed one final message. PROTECTING YOU. Scarlett stared at the words. Leon smiled slightly. “Looks like she’s already picking sides.” But far away, Director Marcus Hale watched the connection drop. His eyes narrowed. “Interesting.” He turned to the agents beside him. “Prepare extraction.” One of them asked, “For the scientists?” Marcus shook his head. “No.” He stared at the screen displaying Nicole’s signal. “For the machine.”
