Prologue
"Come, my child, and let me tell you a tale of heartache and woe, of hope and young love, of myth and legend...
"When a human is born, they are automatically assigned a guardian angel until the day of their 18th birthday. In most cases, the child never knows who their guardian angel is. But it isn't punishable to find out that you have one, what their name is, and/or become close to them during the maturing process all human children must go through. To take advantage of the guardian angel and start an all-out war with them is another matter entirely.
"It is strongly believed amongst humans that, after coming of age or turning 18, a guardian angel is no longer necessary and therefore not assigned. It is also a largely held belief that guardian angels do not actually care for the life that is entrusted to them and so do only the bare minimum of keeping their charge alive. The tradition of naming a godparent to watch over and protect the godchild once the parents have passed on stirred the hearts higher beings, and they gave godparents the ability to fully protect their godchild. While the gifts given varied, they were usually along the same vein: heightened senses, increased strength, higher stamina, and the ability to quickly learn offensive and defensive tactics.
"But, as time went on, less and less godparents were named, and the few who remained were considered devils because of their unmatched ability. Thus, the first war against guardian angels began. During it, the higher beings offered sanctuary to the blessed ones in exchange for their loyalty and their service. Most readily agreed and were saved from the fate of those who remained behind. They, unfortunately, were outnumbered, brutally slaughtered, and left grave-less on the open fields of battle.
"Time passed, and the origins of the guardian angel was forgotten by the small minds of humanity. The few godparents named were watched and, if deemed worthy, were given a sixth sense as their guardian gift. Since most children were not given a godparent, the higher beings offered the rescued godparents the ability to become guardian angels. They would be given the option to either appear in human form as a neighbor or a teacher, or to use their other form, which was invisible to the human eye due to its otherworldly nature.
"Several things changed over the years, but one remained the same: every child had a guardian angel."
