Chapter One – The Rejected Healer
They whispered when she walked by. “The rejected Omega.” “Poor thing, cursed by the moon.” “Her mate cast her aside like spoiled fruit.” The voices slithered through the air as Elara made her way across the courtyard, her basket of herbs tucked firmly under her arm. She kept her chin high, though the weight of their words pressed against her ribs like stones. Her dark braid swayed against the back of her healer’s cloak, her boots crunching on gravel. She pretended not to hear them. Pretended she was made of steel instead of scar tissue. Three years ago, those whispers had cut her wide open. Now, she let them roll off her skin. She didn’t have time to bleed for the past. Not anymore. The scent of rosemary and wolfsbane followed her as she pushed into the infirmary. The air inside was thick with smoke from the herb burners, tangling with the sharper tang of blood. Her patients—soldiers wounded from border patrols, pups coughing with seasonal fevers, an elder with a festering bite—looked up as she entered. Here, in this place of blood and bone, Elara was no longer just “the rejected Omega.” Here, she was Doctor Elara. Healer. Lifesaver. The one even Alphas bowed their heads to when their loved ones hovered between life and death. She set her basket down on the counter, rolling up her sleeves. “Alright,” she said briskly, her voice steady as she checked the poultices drying near the fire. “Let’s get to work.” Hours passed in a blur. Bandages changed. Salves applied. Needles stitching torn flesh back together. Her hands moved quickly, with precision born from repetition. She didn’t think about the whispers then. She thought only of saving lives. It was nearly sunset when the doors to the infirmary slammed open so hard the wooden frame shuddered. Elara’s head snapped up, the needle still pinched between her fingers. Two guards stumbled in, their arms straining beneath the weight of a body. A man’s body. He was broad-shouldered, his tunic shredded and soaked with blood. His head lolled forward, long dark hair matted against his temple. His scent struck Elara first—powerful, intoxicating, sharp as fresh pine and rich earth. Her wolf stirred uneasily inside her, lifting her head for the first time in years. “Make way!” one of the guards barked. “He’s fading fast!” They laid him on the healer’s cot, and only then did the full force of recognition slam into the room. Gasps rippled through the infirmary. Even Elara froze. The golden crest embroidered on his shredded cloak. The sheer dominance radiating from his body even in unconsciousness. The aura of authority so heavy it pressed against her lungs. The Alpha King. Kaelen, ruler of all northern territories, the wolf who commanded legions and crushed rebellions with a single decree. The most feared and respected Alpha alive. Elara’s mouth went dry. The guards looked around wildly. “Where’s the pack physician?” All eyes turned to her. For a moment, she hated that silence. Hated the way it declared what everyone already knew—that she, the rejected one, was all they had. The physician had been gone for days, traveling with the Beta. That left Elara. She straightened her shoulders. “Put him on the main table. Now.” The guards obeyed instantly, relief flashing in their eyes. Elara shoved past the onlookers, her hands already moving. She stripped away what was left of his cloak, wincing at the deep gash that split his side. His blood was dark and sluggish, pooling across the wood. Another s***h across his chest, dangerously close to his heart. Whoever had tried to kill him had meant it. “Get me hot water, clean bandages, and the strongest wolfsbane salve we have,” she ordered. An apprentice scrambled to obey. Elara pressed her palm against the wound, her fingers slick with blood. Her wolf growled low in her chest, urging her to protect, to heal, to keep him alive. And then his eyes opened. Molten gold, glowing faintly even through the haze of pain, locked onto hers. For one heartbeat, she couldn’t move. Couldn’t breathe. The mate bond snapped to life like a lightning strike. Her pulse stuttered, her wolf surging against her ribs, howling with recognition. Heat flared in her chest, curling into something wild and unbearable. No. Her hands trembled, just for an instant. Not again. She would not fall for this cruel trick. She shoved the feeling down, burying it deep where it could not touch her. “You’ll live,” she said sharply, her voice harsher than she intended. “But only if you stop staring at me and let me work.” His lips twitched, a faint ghost of a smirk. Even bleeding out, the Alpha King found amusement in her defiance. “Elara…” someone whispered from the sidelines. “Mind your tone. That’s the—” “I know who he is,” she snapped. She met those golden eyes again, refusing to look away. “And if you want him to live, you’ll shut your mouths and let me work.” The room fell silent. Elara bent to her task, stitching, binding, cleaning, forcing her hands not to shake beneath the weight of his gaze. Every time their eyes met, that unbearable pull deepened, clawing at her resolve. Her wolf clawed at her ribcage, whimpering with recognition. But Elara’s heart was stone. She had felt this once before. She had believed in it once before. And all it had brought her was rejection, humiliation, and years of loneliness. Never again. When the final bandage was tied and the worst of the bleeding stopped, she wiped her hands on a cloth, her chest heaving. The Alpha King still stared at her, his eyes burning with something unreadable. Power radiated off him even as he lay broken on her table. “Elara,” he said, his voice rough as gravel. Somehow he knew her name. Her throat tightened. She forced her voice steady. “Rest. That’s an order.” To her shock, his lips curved again—this time not a smirk, but something softer. As if the king himself found her command amusing. Or admirable. Then his eyes slid shut, his breathing evening out. The silence that followed was deafening. Every pair of eyes in the room landed on her. Elara lifted her chin, refusing to let them see her shake. She turned to the guards. “He’ll live. But he needs rest, and no one disturbs him without my permission. Understood?” They nodded quickly. She pushed past them, needing air, needing space. The whispers followed her again, but they were different this time. “The Alpha King… did you see the way he looked at her?” “Impossible. She’s a rejected Omega.” “Then why did it feel like—” Elara shoved the infirmary doors open and stepped into the cool night air. The moon hung above, silver and silent, as though mocking her. Her hands shook as she pressed them against her chest. The mate bond was alive. She had felt it. She couldn’t deny it. But she would not believe in it. Not again. Nobody wanted a rejected Omega like her. And she refused to care. Even if the Alpha King himself did.
