Chapter 4: A Man’s Nature is Hard to Change

1655 Words
Outsiders eagerly discuss and spread the rumor that Fiona Ruan and Jason Chang were mutually unfaithful to each other. In reality, Fiona had never been cuckolded before, and their divorce was humiliating. However, those within their circle knew the true reason for their bitter feud: it wasn’t about emotions but a battle for fame and profit. One year ago, they suddenly announced their marriage, and within the same month, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Sui Ning Mountain Villa project took place. Both parties held 45% shares each, with the remaining 10% held by Michael Cai. After a year of relative peace, they now swiftly divorced. Michael Cai’s days were about to get tough; to put it politely, he was the hot commodity, literally like a fish on a chopping board, watching helplessly to see which “knife” would strike first. Fiona Ruan sat in the car, watching the spiderweb-like steel beams of the oversea bridge swiftly pass by. Jason Chang answered a phone call, and after hanging up, he said, “Michael Cai’s car has been forced to stop by the Jason Chang family.” Fiona Ruan, wearing sunglasses, concealed her emotions. Ethan silently pressed the accelerator, and a long line of cars behind them simultaneously increased their speed. When Fiona Ruan got out of the car, she saw a few meters away at the railing of the observation deck, Michael Cai was smoking, accompanied by an ominous tall figure. Jason Chang noticed Fiona first; behind his white lenses, his eyes curved into a smile, “Oh, what a coincidence.” Michael Cai turned his head smoothly, and at the moment he saw Fiona Ruan, his expression changed abruptly—panic, embarrassment, and unease. Fiona Ruan stepped forward, and Jason Chang greeted with a smile, “Miss Fiona Ruan, here to see the sea as well?” Fiona Ruan didn’t even offer a perfunctory smile, bluntly stating, “The sea can’t be taken by anyone, you can watch it anytime. I’m here to pick up Mr. Cai for his birthday banquet.” Michael Cai was obviously tense, while Jason Chang remained carefree, “Perfect timing. I just invited Mr. Cai to my birthday banquet. Since he’s already here, let’s go together.” Jason Chang and Fiona Ruan share the same birthday. Besides last year when they celebrated together after getting married, over the years, they have always had the same timing—one in the southern city and the other in the northern city—forcing guests to suffer from indecision and even develop PTSD from Children’s Day. Ignoring Jason Chang, Fiona Ruan focused her gaze on Michael Cai’s face, smiling, “Mr. Cai, let’s go.” Michael Cai glanced at Jason Chang, visibly conflicted. Jason Chang said, “Miss Fiona Ruan, even when inviting someone to a meal, you have to do it in the order of arrival. Otherwise, should Mr. Cai go to my place first and then yours?” Fiona Ruan didn’t even think about it and retorted, “Or maybe change your birthdate?” Jason Chang’s smile didn’t fade, “I actually like Children’s Day quite a bit. I heard that people who have their birthdays today are either pure or ignorant. Which one are you, Miss Fiona Ruan?” Behind them, tension built, and the atmosphere was about to explode. A sea breeze slightly lifted Fiona Ruan’s hair from her forehead, but she remained expressionless, “I’m the most unreasonable kind. I don’t have it, so no one can have it.” Jason Chang blinked without blinking, his eyes filled with an ambiguous expression—whether it was a smile or mockery, “Then try crying, causing a fuss, or even hanging yourself. Maybe with a softened heart, you’ll just give it to me.” He deliberately didn’t mention the subject, but everyone present knew Jason Chang was teasing Fiona Ruan. In the entire Chang family, the only one who dared to deal with Ruan like this was Jason Chang. Michael Cai found himself sandwiched between the two. Although he didn’t interject, he felt like he had spikes piercing his back. Just as he thought Fiona Ruan was about to lose her temper, a loud bang sounded accompanied by chaotic car alarms from the surrounding vehicles. Everyone turned towards the sound. The accident occurred five meters away—two black cars had their fronts collide. One car’s rear broke through the railing, half of its body hung precariously over the bridge, wobbling and threatening to fall. Tourists screamed in fright. Michael Cai’s pupils constricted, and his complexion changed dramatically because the car hanging over the bridge was his. Fiona Ruan and Jason Chang both stood unmovably in place. Fiona Ruan lightly frowned, “Tsk, who was so careless as to almost crash into Brother Jason’s car?” At some point, Jason Chang had shed his smile and now looked at her coldly. Fiona Ruan’s intentions were unmistakable: today was either a birthday or an anniversary, she either takes someone away or doesn’t allow anyone to leave. Police quickly arrived at the observation area, which was in complete chaos. Being questioned inevitably caused delays. Jason Chang, extremely angry, laughed bitterly, “You’re ruthless.” Fiona Ruan remained indifferent. Jason Chang brushed past her, “A man’s nature is hard to change.” Behind her sunglasses, Fiona Ruan’s expression turned cold. She understood Jason Chang’s implication—he was insulting her, saying that dogs can’t change their habit of eating s**t. The accident happened suddenly, and Jason Chang abruptly withdrew, leaving Michael Cai looking pale, unsure of how to get into the Fu family car. Inside the car, the air conditioner was blasting, and Michael Cai was sweating profusely, continuously explaining, “Miss Fiona Ruan, I really wasn’t cheating on both sides. I was forcibly blocked by Mr. Chang on the oversea bridge. If you don’t believe me, you can check the surveillance cameras…” Fiona Ruan didn’t flip her face; instead, she unexpectedly became agreeable, “I believe you.” Michael Cai tensed, turning his head, “I wasn’t deliberately avoiding your calls before. It’s just that the Chang family was also looking for me. I had no choice but to hide temporarily, thinking I’d come back on your birthday. I didn’t expect Mr. Chang to block me on the bridge.” Fiona Ruan remained silent. Michael Cai, with a grim face, continued, “I had promised to sign a contract with you, and I also received your deposit. During this period, I didn’t dare to contact you, mainly fearing the Chang family would discover. I didn’t intend to run away, nor did I think of cooperating with the Chang family. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have rushed back today…” Fiona Ruan’s voice was calm, “Wanting to cooperate with the Chang family is quite normal.” Michael Cai instinctively explained, his brows and eyes full of scrutiny and unease, as if he were still in the car hanging over the sea. Fiona Ruan waited until he finished speaking, then calmly said, “Mr. Michael Cai, you don’t need to be nervous. When I say ‘normal,’ I mean it’s human nature. You were originally part of the Jason Chang family’s Sui Ning Mountain Villa project. Wrongdoings have a culprit, debts have a master, I know who I should approach.” Michael Cai broke into a sweat, unsure whether to nod in agreement. Indeed, he was originally a member of the Chang family, thinking he had hidden well, not knowing how Fiona Ruan knew his secrets. Fiona Ruan guessed what Michael Cai was thinking and said, “Actually, I don’t care who you were before. In business, we’re all talking about interests. If you return to Jason Chang’s side, given his personality, he would directly take the 10% you have and transfer you to an exiled department. Just because I’ve been in contact with you for a year, even if you choose him, he wouldn’t trust you.” “But with me, I guarantee you full executive authority over your company. You’re not anyone’s puppet. Your company is no longer a mere empty shell. It’s okay if it’s fake at first, the most important thing is to seize the opportunity and turn the fake into real. This is also the main reason why Mr. Michael Cai agreed to sign the contract with me.” “Everyone only lives once; people always have to think for themselves.” Fiona Ruan had a friendly attitude. Michael Cai also reconsidered his current and future situation. Between the Jason Chang family and the Jessica Fu family, he was destined to choose one. Now that he was in Fiona Ruan’s car, there was no turning back. Resolutely determined, when Michael Cai spoke again, his expression was firm, “Miss Fiona Ruan, thank you for your understanding and consideration. Once the bow is drawn, there’s no turning back. Please continue to take care of me in the future.” Fiona Ruan removed her sunglasses, smiled, and extended her hand, “From now on, we’re not just business partners, but also friends. I’ll call you Uncle Michael Cai.” Michael Cai was overjoyed, shaking Fiona Ruan’s hand, about to unilaterally forgive the past, when Fiona Ruan calmly said, “Uncle Michael Cai, I hope today’s incident is the last time. In the future, there’s no need to hide or choose between the Fu family and the Jason Chang family.” Michael Cai met Fiona Ruan’s smiling face, her eyes seeming full of care and sincerity, but in that second, his blood seemed to stop flowing. He also recalled the car accident on the observation deck, and Jason Chang’s words about a man’s nature being hard to change. Indeed, no matter how much the Fu family tried to clean their reputation, the inherent darkness couldn’t be concealed. Fiona Ruan, like Wilson Fu, was a wolf, or a mad wolf.
