Chapter 01. Three Sisters
I held my two older sisters’ hands. We sat on the floor, staring at my tightly closed bedroom door.
My two older sisters’ hands were shaking violently.
“Melisa, why is Dad yelling?” I asked my oldest sister.
Melisa just stayed silent. She shook her head briefly, as if she were about to faint right then and there. “Don’t make a sound.”
We’d been sitting on the floor for twenty minutes without moving an inch.
Helen, my second oldest sister, stood up. “We can’t stay like this. Could Dad be seriously hurt?”
“Hurt?” I asked, my breath catching in my throat.
The noise outside suddenly stopped.
Melisa stood up and walked toward the door. Just as her hand was about to turn the doorknob, the door swung open on its own.
Melisa quickly stepped back and then hugged both of us.
There was a man standing in front of us. His face was covered in scars. His eyes were sharp and menacing.
He placed both hands behind his back. “All of you are going to settle your father’s debt.”
We exchanged glances.
Helen, who was the braver of the two, spoke first. “Where’s Dad?”
The man, who also had a wolf tattoo on his neck, smiled slyly. “If you manage to finish the job, your father will come back. If not, you can say goodbye forever.”
Tears immediately streamed down my face, I couldn’t hold them back.
The man shouted. “Riley! Take the eldest first! Mr. Andrews will really like a grown woman like her.”
Melisa shook her head. Her grip on us tightened.
Two other men came over and immediately yanked Melisa away forcefully.
“No!!! Don’t take her!” Helen screamed, slapping the hands of the two men.
“Melisa!” I screamed, still not letting go of her hand.
The man with the wolf tattoo shouted loudly. “Enough! Stop making a scene!”
We couldn’t pry Melisa away from them until finally, both of us were restrained so they could grab her.
Melisa wailed all the way down the hallway, her face filled with terror.
I’d never seen Melisa like that. It was as if she’d rather ‘die’ than leave.
We hugged each other and cried.
Two other men came and grabbed Helen this time.
Helen struck their faces as they didn’t hesitate to drag her, even if it meant dragging her across the carpet.
“Get lost, all of you! We’re innocent! Dad’s innocent too!” Helen said, her eyes wide with shock.
The tattooed man entered the room. He leaned down toward Helen. “Watch your mouth if you want your father to survive—otherwise, you’ll all perish.”
Helen’s mouth was gagged with a cloth, and she was dragged out the same way Melisa had been.
Just as I was about to run out, the tattooed man stopped me.
“Claire.”
“How do you know my name?”
“Of course I know—because you’re a very important person today. You’re going to meet the most powerful and cruel person in this city.”
Before I could respond, my eyes were covered from behind. My mouth was also covered, and I was dragged out the same way Melisa and Helen had been.
The cloth over my eyes kept me from knowing where I was. I could only tell that I was inside a car heading somewhere.
“Boss,” said the tattooed man not far from me. “Claire’s on her way.”
Who’s the Boss?
The car stopped after driving for quite a while.
I was pulled again—dragged until the cloth over my face was finally removed.
A man was standing with his back to me. He was standing by the window. He looked much older than me—I’m just an eighteen-year-old girl.
The door closed behind me.
There was no tattooed man—or anyone else.
It was just me and this very intimidating-looking man.
He must be the “Boss” they mentioned earlier.
“Claire,” the man called out to me, and then he turned around.
My breathing was uncontrolled. “Who are you? What do you want?”
The man gave a small smile. There was no emotion at all. “A cliché question. They should’ve already told you what you need to do to fix the mess your own father created.”
“I’ve never met any of you. I don’t trust you one percent.”
The man approached me. Instinctively, I stepped back.
“I’m sure you know what the mafia is, right?”
The mafia? “I don’t know anything about that.”
“You’re standing right in front of one right now.”
I held my breath. “Are you in the mafia?”
“Carlos Henderson. Everyone knows my name. You’d be too naive not to have heard of me.”
I stared into his eyes, sharp as an eagle’s, and took in how massive his frame was.
“Sorry, I’m not as smart as my two older sisters.”
The man folded his arms and circled me like a predator.
I felt like prey in front of him.
“I initially refused your father’s request to spare him, he said his three daughters could be ‘useful’ to all of us.”
My heart felt like it had been stabbed.
“Dad wouldn’t do that—you’re lying!”
He touched my cheek. But I brushed his hand away.
“Turns out you’re not obedient. I thought that at your young age, you’d be easier to control. Apparently not.”
“I want to see Dad!”
Carlos brought our faces level. “As long as you’re here, you have to obey and don’t argue too much. Otherwise...”
“Otherwise what?!”
His hand stroked my hair with a touch that sent shivers down my spine. “You’ll never see your two older sisters again. Ever.”
My hands were shaking violently. Without a second thought, I immediately ran to the door.
Locked!!!
I ran to the window. I tried to open it.
Locked!!!
I searched for any opening, but there was no way out.
“Don’t waste your energy. You’ll never get out of here,” Carlos sneered.
I turned to face him. “What do you want? Just spit it out!”
Carlos picked up a document from his desk and tossed it at me.
I didn’t dare pick it up.
“Read it and sign it so your whole family will be safe.”
It was a threat.
A threat from a madman named Carlos Henderson.
With my hands still trembling and feeling completely drained of energy, I picked it up.
Contract.
That was the title of the document.
I glanced at Carlos for a moment.
He was happily sipping red wine from the glass in his hand.
He was smiling behind that tall, fancy glass.
The first page listed ten points that left me frozen in place.
1. Carlos and Claire’s marriage will last three months
2. Claire must obey all of Carlos’s orders
3. No communication with family whatsoever
4. No relationship of any kind with any man other than Carlos
5. Fulfill the duties and obligations of a lawful wife
6. Must not interfere in the Henderson Clan’s business affairs
7. She must not go to the fifth floor
8. She must not use any communication devices
9. She must not remove her wedding ring even once
10. She must not discuss this contract marriage with anyone
“This is crazy! A contract? What era are we living in?!”
Carlos set down his cup rather loudly.
He strode over with firm, intimidating steps. He gripped my wrist very tightly.
“This is the best way to keep you safe. If you don’t sign, Melisa will be the first victim.”
I searched his eyes for a lie.
But his eyes didn’t flicker.
He wasn’t joking.
I had to decide right now whether I was willing to become the wife of this devil I didn’t know at all...
