CHAPTER 2
Maximilian’s POV
A shrill scream shatters the tranquility of the environment, making even the performers on stage stop. The voice was awfully familiar to me and I couldn't shake off the unease I felt.
“Is that Zosi?” Leo asks, turning around.
Damn it! It has just been a few minutes since she left my side, why is she getting hurt again?
I run in the direction of the sound with the highest speed I can muster. People are gathered around the rail, looking down at the sea.
My heart skips multiple beats as the worst possible outcome flashes through my mind.
“Zosia!” I roar and rush to the rail.
“Brother Max.” I hear her tearful voice on the floor around the area where people huddled.
I immediately change direction and rush to where she is on the ground groaning.
“Zosi, are you alright?” I whisper, pulling her into my arms. Her eyes were filled with tears, and mucus was streaming down her face as she cried, making my heart ache.
“It hurts, Max, it hurts. My leg, my body, my waist, my heart, it all hurts.” She whimpers, hiding her face against my chest.
“There's someone in the sea!” Someone shouts from the crowd.
“There's already a puddle of blood around her. At this rate, sharks will soon start gathering.” another person says, earning my attention.
“Wait, she looks like Mrs Valdez. Could it be her?” another person exclaims.
My heart jumps into my throat at the mention of Mrs. Valdez. Terror overwhelmed me and it was as if someone had poured fire into my belly.
I quickly stand on my shaky legs, rushing to the rails in hopes of rescuing my wife. But before I could jump in the sea.
Zosi’s tight grip on my pants holds me back as she looks at me with teary eyes. I blinked, trying to keep my mind clear and free from panic as I looked at her and back to the sea.
“Max it hurts, I might have broken my ankle.” She whispers, distracting me again.
“I'm coming, Ariella is in the sea. I will pull her out and quickly return to you.
Five minutes, no two minutes, even one is enough. I will be back before you know it.” I muttered, my heart racing as I prepared to jump.
Zosi screams and holds her leg, making me stop in my tracks and return to her. At this point I'm totally confused, I don't know who to rescue.
Zosi is in serious pain and needs me, but my wife is drowning in the sea. I also need to rescue her before it's too late.
What should I do?
“She slapped me, calling me a homewrecker. She said that I'm despicable for coming home with you and that she will make me miserable and ensure you totally hate me.
As I was still pleading with her to give me a chance to make amends, she stabbed herself with a knife, gave me a hard shove, and jumped into the sea.
Max. Ariella is so toxic. I'm scared of her.
Why would she go to such an extent just to get rid of me? Maybe I should just die. I'm a burden to you and I don't think I deserve to live.
All these will stop if I just join my Jude and die.
The mention of her brother’s name just made my heart bleed. Oh, my good friend Jude! How I wish he was alive. He was my everything and didn't deserve to die.
He was all that Zosia had. And now that he's no more, I've decided to take care of her as my own.
But it seems I'm failing to protect her. And it is all because of Ariella!
Any little chance she gets she tries to use it to hurt Zosia. I've warned her severally but she still does It
I don't even know if it's just jealousy or sheer wickedness,”
“Please I don't want you and Ariella to quarrel because of me again. Else she will continue to have problems with you. Once I die, she won't have a reason to fight you anymore. I just have to die.” Zosia sorrowfully muttered.
At once, the panic and terror in my heart were replaced by anger. The desire to tear that ungrateful Ariella to pieces immediately snuffs out all the worry I felt for her.
I have explained to her that Zosi is going through depression and needs to be pampered.
But her petty jealousy won't let her leave an innocent little girl alone.
Every time I think about forgiving her for what her family did in the past, she repeats a heinous act that reminds me once again that her family is a race of demented monsters who kill without hesitation, as long as it profits them.
Since she went to great lengths to create such drama, even willing to hurt herself, I will let her enjoy it.
I carry up Zosi and turn to leave.
“Ah? Max, where are you going? What about your wife? She's still in the sea. What do we do?” Leo, my butler shouts, trying to stop me.
“The sharks can have her as dinner for all I care,” I whisper, barely suppressing the anger and disappointment in my heart as I carry little Zosi away.
