The Last Wall Part 1 : The 12 Millikn Dollar Secret
The rain in Oakhaven did not fall; it threw itself against the concrete pillars of the Arena. It was 11:00 PM on a Tuesday, three hours after the final whistle. The stadium lights hummed, casting long, sharp shadows across the empty pitch. In the center of the home dressing room sat Leo Vance. At thirty-five, his body was a roadmap of a twenty-year football war. His left knee clicked loudly when he walked. His ribs bore a deep, purple bruise from a collision with a striker ten years his junior. He sat on the wooden bench, his broad shoulders hunched forward, slowly unpeeling the white tape from his swollen ankles. The silence was loud. The dressing room usually smelled of wintergreen, sweat, and cheap celebratory champagne. Tonight, it smelled like an ending. The heavy oak door clicked open. Marcus Thorne, the club’s sporting director, walked in. Marcus did not wear tracksuits; he wore three-piece Italian suits that cost more than Leo’s first-year contract at the academy. He held a sleek, leather-bound folder in his hand."The board just finalized the terms, Leo," Marcus said. His voice was flat, completely devoid of the emotion that usually filled this room. "It’s the highest offer for a defender in football history. Forty million for the club. Twelve million a year for you. Tax-free."Leo did not look up from his tape. "From FC Olympus.""They want to announce it on Friday. Before the derby."Leo finally raised his head. His eyes, dark and sunken with fatigue, fixed on Marcus. "We play United on Sunday. If I leave Friday, the backline collapses. We don’t have the depth."Marcus let out a short, cynical laugh. "Leo, look around you. The paint is peeling off these walls. The club is sixty million in debt. If we don’t sell you, we can’t afford the registration fees for the youth academy next season. The fans will understand. You’ve given us twenty years. You’ve won three trophies. You owe Oakhaven FC nothing.""I owe them everything," Leo said softly. He stood up. His joints protested, but he stood at his full height of six-foot-two. He walked over to his locker. Hanging inside was the blue-and-gold jersey of Oakhaven FC. The fabric was stained with grass and mud from tonight’s match. Above the number 4, his name was printed in bold, block letters. Below it hung the captain's armband—a simple piece of elastic, faded from years of sweat and sunlight."Olympus is a franchise, Marcus," Leo said, his voice hardening. "They buy history. They don’t make it. I was born three blocks from this stadium. My grandfather stood on the North Terrace when we won the league in '74. You’re asking me to wear another badge?""I’m asking you to be smart," Marcus countered, stepping closer. "Your contract expires in ten months. The club cannot offer you an extension. Not at your current wage, and certainly not with your medical records. Your knee is a ticking clock, Leo. Take the payday. Secure your family’s future."Leo picked up the armband. He ran his thumb over the embroidered club crest—a stylized oak tree rising from a stone wall."They called me 'The Last Wall' in the newspapers this morning," Leo said, a faint smile touching his lips. "Do you know why?""Because you block shots, Leo. It’s a metaphor.""No," Leo said, turning to face him. "Because a wall doesn’t move just because the wind blows hard. Tell Olympus the answer is no."Marcus stared at him, his face tightening with frustration. "The board will invoke the financial emergency clause. We can force the transfer, Leo. The club needs the money to survive.""Then force it," Leo said, stepping past him toward the showers. "But you’ll have to drag me out of here in handcuffs. Because as long as I can walk, I play for Oakhaven."
