The Door to Destiny
The night sky at the Koa military base sparkled with stars, but Dexter Koa could only stare at it vacantly. A thick envelope with the national emblem was tightly clenched in his hand, instantly changing his life. Dexter could not imagine that his life would soon be at stake. Something extraordinary was about to happen, but uncertainty lingered in his mind.
Mr. Koa gazed from a distance at his son, who was lost in thought. Despite his firm demeanor, Mr. Koa still felt reluctant to let go of his only son. He approached him.
"Dexter, are you really sure you want to do this?" General Koa, his father, asked in a heavy tone.
Dexter took a deep breath, his eyes meeting his father's, standing proudly before him. "This isn't about choice, Father. It's a mission, and I... I'm the only one who can do it."
General Koa nodded slowly, though his heartfelt heavy. He knew that his son's life would never be the same after today. The conversation that night felt brief to both of them.
Two Weeks Earlier.
The call came suddenly, like a storm sweeping in without warning. Dexter and hundreds of other candidates were summoned to a secret government facility. Its location was hidden amid a barren desert, protected by layers of security. Only the chosen ones could enter this place.
Dexter had previously undergone special training at the base, so he was well-prepared physically and mentally. General Koa believed his son would pass the selection process, so he fully supported Dexter's decision.
"Welcome to the Event Horizon Project," said a short-haired woman in a Groot uniform. Her voice was firm yet cold.
"You are all here because of your exceptional potential. But only one of you will be chosen for the most important mission in human history."
Dexter stood in line, feeling like a grain of sand in the middle of an ocean. He didn't understand why he was there or how he had become part of something so grand. During his time at the base, he had followed orders. Since it was for the country, Dexter was willing to do anything to preserve its integrity.
The tests began with physical, mental, and technological challenges. Over the next two weeks, the other candidates dropped out, either failing to meet the standards or succumbing to the pressure. However, Dexter continued to endure, never feeling special. He poured all his strength and focus into the tests, hoping to return to the base with pride for all who had supported him.
The Last Day of Testing.
When the participants were in a very large room, a large ring-shaped device stood before them. In the center of the ring, swirling black energy pulsated, glowing like a living heartbeat, an artificial black hole, as they called it. All eyes were on the giant device, including Dexter's. He marveled at the advancements in technology.
"Who is ready to pioneer?" the Groot woman challenged.
Everyone exchanged doubtful glances. The concept of a black hole was terrifying, something even modern science had yet to comprehend fully. But Dexter, for some reason, felt an odd push within him. His desire to volunteer burned intensely.
"I'll do it," he said, his voice steady, though anxiety churned inside him.
All eyes were on Dexter. Seeing the courage he displayed made the other participants feel proud and moved. Dexter's charisma made them reluctant to look away. The Groot woman began to smile, and her gaze seemed pleased with Dexter's determination and bravery.
Dexter stepped forward, his body clad in specially designed protective gear. The instructions seemed to blur in his ears as he stood before the portal, its dark energy absorbing all the surrounding light. Dexter began to breathe slowly, trying to calm himself and stay focused. With one step forward, Dexter leaped into the black hole.
Dark. Silent. Void.
It wasn't as he had imagined; Dexter did not perish. His body felt light, as if floating between time and space. Strange lights spiraled around him, whispering things he couldn't understand. His mind felt empty.
When Dexter awoke, he found himself on the other side, in a strange world. He began to look around. Everything seemed the same to him, yet different. The sky was a reddish-purple, the trees like crystal, and the wind carried the scent of metal. Dexter knew one thing for sure: he had passed through a door to something more significant than himself.
Back to the Present.
"That's why I have to go," Dexter told his father.
"I don't know what's out there, but I'm sure it's bigger than all of us." Dexter looked at his father with resolve.
General Koa nodded, then patted his son's shoulder.
"Then don't disappoint this world, son."
Morning arrived, and it was time for Dexter to leave. Dexter began saying his goodbyes to all his comrades and subordinates. He started searching for someone. Someone who also meant a lot to his life; as Dexter entered the helicopter that would take him to the Groot facility, he glanced toward Gabriela, who stood at a distance. Their eyes met briefly, enough to make him feel the weight of leaving everything behind.
Gabriela's expression was sad. Although she had been reluctant to meet Dexter to say goodbye, her heart couldn't resist.
"I'm sorry," she whispered just before the helicopter took off, carrying Dexter into the darkness of his fate. Gabriela
Could only mourn the departure of the man she loved.
