uncalled love. chapter 1
The sound of polished shoes echoed through the marble hallway. Everything in the Blackstone mansion whispered of wealth — the golden chandeliers, the scent of roses that never wilted, the silence that followed every command.
Liam clutched his résumé tightly, his palms damp with sweat. This was supposed to be just another job — a simple position as a secretary to help him pay his university fees. But one look at the giant portraits on the walls and the perfectly dressed servants told him he didn’t belong here.
He was just eighteen — smart, hopeful, and broke.
“Mr. Blackstone will see you now,” a maid said softly, her tone so formal it made Liam’s stomach twist.
He nodded, adjusted his cheap tie, and stepped into the office.
The room was massive — floor-to-ceiling windows, dark shelves filled with books, a faint scent of leather and coffee. And behind a glass desk sat Adrian Blackstone, the man who owned everything Liam could only dream of.
Adrian looked up slowly from his laptop. His sharp gray eyes locked onto Liam like a quiet storm. His suit fit perfectly, his hair slicked back in effortless perfection. He was easily in his late twenties, but something about him — the calm, the control — made him seem older.
“You’re the new assistant?” Adrian’s voice was smooth, low, and commanding.
Liam swallowed. “Yes, sir. Liam Parker.”
Adrian’s gaze didn’t soften. “Your résumé says you can type fast and handle pressure. I hope that’s true. The last one couldn’t.”
“Yes, sir,” Liam said quickly, standing straighter.
For a few seconds, the only sound was the quiet ticking of a golden clock. Adrian’s eyes drifted back to his computer screen, but Liam could feel them on him — measuring, analyzing, judging.
“You’ll start tomorrow,” Adrian said finally. “Be here by eight. Don’t be late.”
“Yes, sir.”
As Liam turned to leave, Adrian spoke again. “And, Liam…”
He paused. “Yes?”
Adrian’s tone dropped, colder but curious. “You’re not easily intimidated, are you?”
Liam blinked, unsure if it was a trick question. “No, sir. I just... want to do a good job.”
A faint smirk curved on Adrian’s lips. “Good.”
Liam stepped out of the office, heart pounding. The door closed behind him, and he exhaled shakily, pressing a hand against his chest.
He didn’t understand what had just happened — the way Adrian’s voice lingered in his mind, the way his eyes seemed to look past his words. It was ridiculous. He had just met his boss.
But something about that moment felt different. Dangerous.
Outside, the afternoon sun poured through the tall windows, painting golden light across the marble floor. Liam stood there for a long time, wondering what kind of world he had just stepped into — and what it would cost him to stay.
That was how it began — an uncalled love neither of them had planned, but one that would change everything.
