CHAPTER ONE
Alex Marcus eyes burned with
an unyielding intensity as he spoke, his
voice low and menacing. "I don't care
about the looks on their faces or what
they'll think, Joe. I don't care about
their opinions or their expectations. I care
about one thing which is winning."
Joe shifted uncomfortably, familiar with
Alex's ruthless streak. "You're talking
about attending university like it's a
business deal, Alex."
Alex's smile was cold and calculating. "It is
a deal. A deal where I'll invest my time, my
money, and my intellect, and in return, I'll
come out with a degree and the
knowledge to further my empire."
Marcus raised an eyebrow. "And what
about the other students? The professors?
How will they be able to teach someone
like you? And the management, they'll
make you follow all their rules. Won't that
be a challenge?
Alex's laughter was devoid of humor.
"Challenge? They'll be obstacles, Joe. And
obstacles are meant to be crushed. I'll do
whatever it takes to succeed, to be the
best, and to come out on top."
Marcus nodded, knowing better than to
underestimate Reginald's determination.
"You're going to make waves, Reggie. Big
waves."
Reginald's eyes gleamed with anticipation.
"That's the plan."
Alex's secretary, Emma, entered his office,
her eyes fixed on his imposing figure
behind the desk. "You called for me, Mr.
Alex?"
Alex's gaze snapped up, his eyes piercing.
"Emma, I need you to find out which
University in New York is the best. And I
don't mean 'best' according to some
arbitrary rankings. I mean the one that will
be most willing to accommodate
my...particular needs."
Emma's hands trembled slightly as she
nodded. "Yes, sir. I'll get right on it."
Alex's expression turned cold. "See that
you do. I expect a report on my desk within
the hour. And, Emma?"
"Yes, sir?" she replied, her voice barely
above a whisper.
"I don't want to hear any...amusement or
speculation about this from you or anyone
else in the office."
Emma's face went pale, and she nodded
hastily. "Yes, sir."
Alex's gaze lingered on her for a
moment before he nodded curtly. "Good.
Now get to work."
Emma scurried out of the office, her heart
racing with a mix of fear and anticipation.
She knew better than to cross Alex.
As soon as Emma left the office, Joe, who
had been observing from the side, burst
out laughing. "Oh man, Alex, you're going
to make her nervous breakdown," he
chuckled.
Alex's expression didn't change, but a hint
of amusement danced in his eyes. "Good.
I like my staff to be on their toes."
Joe wiped tears from his eyes, still
chuckling. "You're really going to do it,
aren't you? You're going to attend
university like a normal person."
Alex leaned back in his chair, a cold smile
spreading across his face. "I'm not going
to attend university like a normal person,
Joe. I'm going to dominate it. And
Everyone else is going to know my name."
Joe grinned. "I have no doubt you will,
Alex. You're a force to be reckoned with."
Alex's eyes gleamed with determination.
"You have no idea.”
Shortly after 20 minutes, Emma returned
to Alex's office, her hands shaking slightly
as she placed the report on his desk.
"Here's the information you requested, Mr.
Worthington. Columbia University is
considered one of the top institutions in
New York, and I've highlighted their
programs and admissions requirements."
Alex's eyes scanned the report, his
expression unreadable. After a moment,
he looked up at Emma. "And what about
the admissions process? How difficult is it
to get in?"
Emma swallowed hard, trying to maintain
her composure. "It's highly competitive, sir.
But I've also included information on
potential contacts within the university who
might...facilitate the process."
Alex's gaze lingered on her for a
moment before he nodded curtly. "Good
work, Emma. See that my application is
submitted promptly. I want to start classes
as soon as possible."
Emma nodded hastily, her eyes wide with
a mix of fear and fascination. "Yes, sir.
Right away."
As she turned to leave, Alex's voice
stopped her. "Emma?"
"Yes, sir?" she replied, turning back.
"Make sure the university knows who I am.
I don't want any...special treatment to go
unnoticed."
Emma's face went pale, but she nodded
again. "Yes, sir. I'll make sure they're
aware of your...involvement.”
………………………….
As Alex and Joe stepped out of the office
building, the crisp evening air hit them like
a slap in the face. They walked in silence
for a while, the only sound being the
clicking of their shoes on the pavement.
It wasn't until they reached the corner of
the street, where the neon lights of a diner
beckoned, that Joe spoke up. "You know,
Alex, I never thought I'd see the day you'd
want to go back to school."
Alex smiled wryly, his eyes gazing off into
the distance. "I guess we're both full of
surprises, Joe."
They entered the diner, a retro-style joint
that seemed frozen in time. The waitress,
a friendly woman with a warm smile,was
shocked to see a popular figure in her
restaurant. As she took their order, she
made sure to leave a good impression
before they settle into a booth in the back.
As they waited for their food, Alex's
expression turned contemplative. "You
know, Joe, sometimes I think about the
orphanage."
Joe's expression softened, and he nodded.
"Me too, Alex. Me too."
They sat in silence for a moment, lost in
their thoughts. Alex's eyes drifted off, and
he was transported back to the cold, grey
walls of the orphanage. He remembered
the sound of children crying, the smell of
stale food, and the feeling of being
invisible.
"I used to think we were lucky, Joe," Alex
said, his voice low and reflective. "We had
each other, and we survived. But
sometimes, I wonder what would have
happened if we'd had someone to guide
us, someone to show us the way."
Joe nodded, his eyes understanding.
"We did okay, Akex. We made it out."
Alex's gaze snapped back to the present,
and he fixed Joe with an intense stare.
"Yeah, we made it out, but at what cost?
I've spent my whole life proving to myself
that I'm worth something, that I'm more
than just a kid from the orphanage. But
now, I realize that I don't know if it's
enough."
Joe reached out and put a hand on Alex's
shoulder. "You're one of the smartest, most
resourceful people I know, Alex. You've
built an empire from scratch. What more
do you need to prove?"
Alex's smile was wry. "I don't know,
Joe. Maybe I just want to prove it to myself
in a different way. Maybe I want to know
that I can succeed in a place where people
like us aren't usually expected to thrive."
Their food arrived, and they ate in silence
for a while, lost in their thoughts. As they
finished up, Alex spoke up again.
"You know, Joe, I think this is about more
than just getting a degree. It's about
showing myself that I'm capable of more
than I ever thought possible."
Joe nodded, a small smile playing on his
lips. "I think you're capable of anything you
set your mind to, Alex. You've always been
driven, always pushed yourself to be
better. I have no doubt you'll crush it in
university."
Alex's eyes gleamed with determination.
"I'm going to make the most of this, Joe.
I'm going to learn everything I can, and I'm
going to come out on top."
As they left the diner, Alex felt a sense of
purpose that he hadn't felt in a long time.
He knew that this was just the beginning of
a new chapter in his life, one that would
challenge him, push him, and ultimately
make him stronger.
As they strolled out of the diner, Alex
and Joe walked side by side, their strides
long and confident. The evening air was
filled with the sounds of the city, and they
drew more than a few admiring glances
from passersby. Alex's tailored suit and
commanding presence made him hard to
ignore, while Joe's easy smile and relaxed
demeanor added to their undeniable
charisma.
As they walked, Joe chuckled and nudged
Alex. "You know, we make quite the pair.
People are probably wondering who the
more important one is."
Alex raised an eyebrow, a hint of
amusement dancing in his eyes. "I think
it's fairly obvious who's the one in charge
here."
Joe laughed. "Yeah, probably. But you
know what they say: 'never underestimate
the power of the sidekick.'"
Alex smirked. "And what exactly do you
bring to the table, Joe?"
"Well, for starters, I bring sanity," Joe
replied with a grin. "And also, I'm the one
who keeps you from getting too full of
yourself."
Alex chuckled, a low, rich sound. "I think
you're overestimating your influence,
Joe."
As they continued their stroll, they joked
and bantered back and forth, enjoying the
warm evening air and each other's
company. Despite the attention they drew
from others, they seemed oblivious to it,
comfortable in their own skin.
When they finally reached Alex's
penthouse apartment, the maid, Mrs.
Jenkins, greeted them with a warm smile.
"Good evening, Mr. Alex, Mr. Joe. Can I
get you anything to drink?"
Alex nodded, handing his jacket to Mrs.
Jenkins. "Thank you, Mrs. Jenkins. We'll
get drinks ourselves. Just make sure
Everything is ready for tomorrow."
Mrs. Jenkins nodded and discreetly
disappeared into the background, leaving
the two men to their conversation.
As soon as she was gone, Joe turned to
Alex and said, "You know, sometimes I
forget you're a billionaire. Your life is just
so... normal."
Alex raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
Joe shrugged. "I don't know. You just seem
so down-to-earth, despite all the wealth
and luxury. You're not like some rich guys
who act like they're above everyone else."
Alex chuckled. "I think that's because I've
worked hard for everything I have. I don't
forget where I came from."
Joe glance
d around appreciatively “This
Place is sooo beautiful.”
Alex smiled wryly. "I'm glad you approve."
Joe chuckled. "Approve? I'm just
impressed you didn't insist on taking the
car. We're practically rocking the whole
'billionaire hipster' vibe tonight."
Alex laughed, shaking his head. "Shut up,
Joe."
As they settled into the living room,
Alex poured them each a drink, and they
sat down to enjoy the quiet of the evening,
the sounds of the city drifting in through
the windows.
