CHAPTER SIX:THE BILLION- DOLLAR MOTIVE

The study fell into a heavy silence. The only sound was the steady ticking of the antique grandfather clock standing in the corner, each second reminding Ariana that the life she had known was slipping farther away. She stared at the document spread across the mahogany desk. Her father's signature. His lawyer's seal. The date. Every line confirmed what she had just learned. She hadn't imagined it. She hadn't misunderstood. For three years, she had been living a lie. Her fingers trembled as she traced the final paragraph. "Upon Ariana Vale reaching the age of twenty-seven, all controlling shares of Vale Biotech shall be transferred to her immediately. Until such date, the acting chairperson shall serve only as temporary custodian and shall possess no authority to transfer ownership of the company." Temporary. One word. One word that destroyed everything Selena had made Ariana believe. Ariana slowly lowered the papers. "My father never abandoned me..." Her voice cracked. "He trusted me." Dr. Evelyn watched her with quiet sympathy. "He did." "You were simply too young to understand what he was protecting." Tears burned Ariana's eyes. She remembered sitting beside her father as a little girl while he worked late into the night. He used to smile whenever she wandered into his office. "One day, this company will be yours, Little Star." She had laughed, believing he was joking. He wasn't. Someone had stolen that future from her. Ethan reached into his jacket and placed another file on the desk. "If that's all Selena had done, this would have been a case of fraud." "But it isn't." Ariana looked at him. "What do you mean?" He opened the file. Inside were financial records, photographs, bank statements, and corporate documents. Each page carried Selena's signature. Each page revealed another hidden transaction. Millions of dollars had quietly disappeared over the last three years. Some had been transferred to offshore companies. Others had been disguised as research expenses. There were fake consulting contracts. Ghost employees. Shell corporations. It wasn't simple embezzlement. It was systematic theft. Ariana's face grew pale. "She planned this..." "For years," Ethan finished. "And she couldn't complete it while you were alive." The words settled over the room like a storm cloud. Ariana leaned back in her chair. "So that's why I had to die." Ethan nodded. "If you inherited the company tomorrow, an independent audit would expose everything." "And Selena would lose not only the company..." "...but her freedom." Dr. Evelyn folded her arms. "So she chose murder instead." The realization made Ariana's stomach tighten. Instinctively, she rested a hand over her abdomen. Her baby shifted slightly. A tiny reminder that she wasn't fighting for herself anymore. She wasn't alone. She never would be again. "I'm not letting them win," she whispered. Ethan studied her carefully. "Then you need to stop thinking like a victim." She met his gaze. "You need to think like someone who has already died." The sentence lingered in the air. He wasn't wrong. Ariana Vale had been buried yesterday. Every newspaper in the country believed she was dead. Every legal record declared her deceased. Every enemy had lowered their guard. For the first time since the accident... She possessed something priceless. Anonymity. Ethan walked toward the window overlooking the mountains. "They believe they're celebrating victory." "They won't see you coming." Hundreds of miles away, the boardroom at Ashford Group remained brightly lit. Damien hadn't gone home. Stacks of files covered the conference table. Noah entered carrying another folder. "I spoke to the forensic laboratory." Damien didn't look up. "And?" "They reopened the vehicle analysis." Damien finally raised his head. "What changed?" "The chief examiner admitted something didn't feel right about the original report." He handed Damien several photographs. Close-up images of Ariana's wrecked car. The brake lines. The engine. The undercarriage. One picture caught Damien's attention immediately. "What is this?" Noah leaned over. "A GPS tracking device." Damien frowned. "It wasn't factory installed." "No." "It was attached professionally." Silence filled the room. Damien slowly placed the photograph back onto the table. "So someone knew exactly where Ariana was." "And where she was going." Noah nodded. "It gets worse." He produced another report. "The brake fluid contained chemical contamination." Damien's heartbeat slowed. "What does that mean?" "It means the brakes didn't fail naturally." "They were sabotaged." The words struck him harder than any physical blow. For weeks... He had blamed fate. Now he was staring at proof that fate had nothing to do with it. Someone had murdered his wife. Or tried to. His hands clenched into fists. "Who knew her schedule that day?" Noah hesitated. "You." "Your executive assistant." "The house staff." "And..." Damien looked up. "And who?" Noah swallowed. "Selena Vale." Damien's jaw tightened. Images flashed through his mind. Selena insisting Ariana was unstable. Selena encouraging the divorce. Selena comforting him at the funeral. Suddenly... None of it felt genuine. Meanwhile... Selena stood inside her luxurious penthouse overlooking the city skyline. Tomorrow was supposed to be the happiest day of her life. The board would officially recognize her as permanent chairperson of Vale Biotech. The inheritance would become hers. Everything she had worked toward would finally belong to her. Yet she couldn't shake the uneasiness crawling beneath her skin. The anonymous message on her television still haunted her. ENJOY YOUR LAST NIGHT AS CEO. Who had sent it? How? She walked toward the hidden safe concealed behind a painting. Inside lay stacks of cash, fake passports, and a small black notebook. Every payment. Every bribe. Every secret. She reached for the notebook. Before she could touch it... Her phone rang. The caller ID displayed an unfamiliar number. She answered cautiously. "Who is this?" For several seconds... Silence. Then a woman's voice whispered through the speaker. "Did you enjoy my funeral?" Selena froze. The phone slipped from her trembling fingers. Her face drained of color. "No..." It couldn't be. The line disconnected. Her heartbeat thundered in her ears. She picked up the phone and frantically called the assassin she'd hired months earlier. The call went straight to voicemail. Again. And again. No answer. Fear tightened around her throat. For the first time in years... Selena felt hunted. Back at the mountain estate, dawn painted the sky with shades of gold. Ariana stood on the balcony, watching the first rays of sunlight spill across the valley. Today was her twenty-seventh birthday. The day her father had prepared her for. The day she was meant to inherit everything. Instead... The world believed she was buried beneath six feet of earth. Ethan joined her quietly. "Happy birthday." She gave a bittersweet smile. "Not exactly how I imagined celebrating." He handed her a small envelope. "What's this?" "A new identity." Inside was a passport. A driver's license. Corporate credentials. Every document carried the same name. Aurora Blake. Ariana looked up. "Aurora?" "From this moment forward, Ariana Vale no longer exists." "You'll rebuild your life under this name." She stared at the passport. It felt strange. Exciting. Terrifying. "If I do this..." "There'll be no turning back." Ethan nodded. "No." She closed the passport and took a long breath. Then she looked toward the distant city where her husband mourned her... Where her sister celebrated her death... Where her enemies believed they had already won. A slow, determined smile spread across her face. "They buried Ariana Vale." She tightened her grip on the passport. "But they have no idea..." "...they've just created Aurora Blake." At that exact moment, Ethan's secure phone vibrated. He answered immediately. "What happened?" The voice on the other end spoke urgently. "They've discovered the inheritance documents are missing." Ethan's expression darkened. "And?" "They've put a price on Ariana Vale's head." "Dead or alive." He slowly lowered the phone. Ariana saw the look in his eyes. She didn't need to ask. She already knew. The war had officially begun.
