CHAPTER ONE: THE WOMAN IN THE COFFIN
Rain fell without mercy.
The black umbrellas surrounding the cemetery looked like wilted flowers, trembling beneath the storm as mourners stood in solemn silence.
At the center of it all rested a polished mahogany coffin.
Inside lay the woman everyone had come to bury.
Ariana Vale Ashford.
Twenty-six years old.
Wife.
Daughter.
Businesswoman.
Traitor.
At least, that was what the newspapers had called her before she died.
"CEO's Wife Dies After Corporate Fraud Scandal."
"Billionaire Damien Ashford Loses Wife in Tragic Accident."
"Justice Served?"
Every headline had buried her long before this funeral.
The priest closed his Bible.
"We commit her body to the earth. Dust to dust. Ashes to ashes."
A handful of soil struck the coffin.
Thud.
Another.
Thud.
Then another.
Each sound echoed like a nail sealing the end of a life that had been built on lies.
In the front row stood Damien Ashford.
Tall.
Immaculately dressed in a black tailored suit.
His face was expressionless, carved from stone, yet the dark circles beneath his eyes betrayed nights without sleep.
He never looked away from the coffin.
Not once.
People whispered around him.
"They say she stole billions."
"I heard she sold company secrets."
"Poor Mr. Ashford. He loved her."
"Did he? He divorced her the day before she died."
Their voices blended with the rain.
Damien heard every word.
He answered none.
His fingers tightened around a white rose until the thorns pierced his skin.
Blood stained the petals.
He didn't notice.
Or perhaps...
He simply didn't care.
A woman stepped forward wearing oversized sunglasses despite the rain.
Selena Vale.
Ariana's elder sister.
She removed her glasses and wiped away perfectly timed tears.
"My little sister..." she sobbed dramatically.
"I wish you had trusted me."
The crowd sighed sympathetically.
No one noticed the tiny smile that flashed across Selena's lips before disappearing.
No one...
Except the woman standing beneath an old oak tree at the edge of the cemetery.
Hidden beneath a black hood.
Her face half-covered.
Watching.
Alive.
Ariana.
She stood frozen as strangers mourned a woman who had never truly died.
Her pulse hammered in her ears.
Her lungs burned.
The fresh scar along her ribs ached beneath her coat.
She shouldn't have been standing.
The doctor had warned her.
"You lost too much blood. Rest."
But she couldn't.
Not today.
Not while they buried an empty coffin.
Not while the people who tried to kill her shed fake tears over a crime they had committed.
She watched Selena throw a white lily onto the grave.
"You can rest now, sister."
Liar.
Ariana's nails dug into her palms.
She remembered everything.
The brakes failing.
The car plunging off the cliff.
The freezing river swallowing her whole.
Hands...
Strong hands...
Pulling her from the wreckage before darkness claimed her.
Someone had saved her.
Someone who disappeared before she woke.
And when she finally opened her eyes three days later in a remote mountain clinic, the first words she heard changed her life forever.
"Congratulations... you're pregnant."
Pregnant.
With Damien's child.
The very man who had signed the divorce papers only hours before the accident.
The man who never came looking for her.
Or so she believed.
A gust of wind swept through the cemetery.
Damien slowly raised his head.
His eyes drifted toward the oak tree.
Toward the hooded woman.
For one impossible heartbeat...
Their gazes met.
Ariana's breath caught.
No.
He couldn't recognize her.
Not from this distance.
Not after weeks of recovery.
Not beneath the hood.
Yet something in his expression changed.
Confusion.
Disbelief.
Hope.
He took one step toward her.
Then another.
"Ariana...?"
His voice was barely a whisper.
She turned.
And disappeared into the rain before he could reach her.
Damien broke into a run.
Ignoring the mourners.
Ignoring the mud beneath his polished shoes.
Ignoring the voices calling his name.
By the time he reached the oak tree...
There was no one there.
Only a single white lily lying on the soaked grass.
Damien stared at it for a long moment.
His heartbeat became uneven.
For the first time since the funeral began...
He looked at the coffin.
Then back at the empty place beneath the tree.
A question he couldn't explain settled deep in his mind.
What if the woman I buried today... wasn't my wife?
