CHAPTER 6 ADRIAN'S POV "I'm fine. Just got caught up." She dropped the game on my desk and flopped onto the couch. "Besides, I had a weird day. Ran into some guy at school...and at work." My ears perked up. "Some guy?" I asked, trying to sound casual. Kai's smile was back. "Edward. He's...something." What? That asshole? He is my sworn enemy, how dare he come close to Kai? My mind was racing. Edward Cole, the guy who's been making my life hell since freshman year, is now sniffing around Kai? No way. I tried to keep my cool. "What...what happened with him?" I asked, trying not to sound too invested. Kai shrugged, looking way too relaxed. "Just ran into him at school and at the cafe. He's kinda...intense." Intense? That's one way to put it. Edward's got a rep for being ruthless. "You should stay away from him, Kai," I said, probably a bit too quickly. Kai raised an eyebrow. "Why? He's actually kinda...interesting." Interesting? Are you kidding me? "He's trouble, Kai. Trust me." I tried to keep my voice level, but I could feel my anger rising. Edward's got a way of getting people hurt, and I won't let him do that to Kai. "Stop overreacting Adrian, I don't think he is that bad. By the way I already gave him my number" my eyes widened in shock. "What?! You gave him your number?! Kai, what were you thinking?" I asked, trying to keep my voice down. Kai looked at me like I was overreacting. "I was thinking he's not that bad, okay? He's actually kinda nice." Nice?! Edward Cole?! I couldn't believe it. "Kai, you don't know him like I do. He's-". Kai cut me off, "Adrian, stop. I'm a big girl, I can handle myself." She flopped back onto the couch, eyes on the ceiling. "Besides, it's just a number. No big deal." Just a number?! Edward's gonna use that to get closer to her, I could feel it. I sighed, running a hand through my hair. "You don't get it, Kai." She stood up and head up stairs. "good night Ken" she said and walked away. I let out a frustrated sigh, watching her go. Guess I'm gonna have to keep an eye on Kai and Edward... I turned back to my room, mind still racing. Edward's involvement with Kai wasn't part of the plan. I needed to protect her, but without freaking her out. EDWARD'S POV Kai seems like the very interesting type. Too bad she's hanging out with the son of a b***h, Adrian Reyes. The next day in school I purposely waited right in front of kai's locker. She walked in alone, well that was a relief. "Edward?... What are you doing here?" she asked "waiting for you." Kai raised an eyebrow, looking more amused than intimidated. "For me?" she asked, like she didn't quite believe it. I leaned against the locker next to hers, casual. "Yeah. Want to grab coffee with me after school?" Kai hesitated for a split second before shrugging. "Sure, why not but I have a shift at the coffee after school?" Kai agreed way too easily, leaving me wondering what she's playing at. "Pick you up at the cafe then?" I asked, watching her expression. She nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. "Sounds good." I pushed off the locker, leaning in slightly. "Looking forward to it, Kai." I straightened up and walked off, feeling her eyes on me. Now to figure out her angle. Alright, let's get more detailed. So, Kai agreed to grab coffee with me, and I'm curious about her deal. Is she really that chill or is she playing hard to get? Either way, I'm intrigued. As I walked away from her locker, I couldn't help but think about how Adrian's gonna flip when he finds out about this. Guess it's gonna be interesting around here. Speaking of the devil and they should up. Adrian Reyes was right in front of me, glaring. This is really quite interesting but I don't get why he's so angry. "Hey Adrian" I said with a smirk "Edward stay away from Kai!" oh straight forward, I like it. I raised an eyebrow, intrigued by Adrian's intensity. "Why's that, Adrian?" I asked, taking a step closer, my voice low and smooth. "You don't own her, do you?" The tension between us was palpable, and I could see the anger simmering in his eyes. Adrian's face darkened. "Just stay away, Edward. She's not like the others." Ah, now we're getting somewhere. "Oh, and what makes her so special?" I asked, my smirk still in place. Adrian's jaw clenched. "She is, okay? Just back off." he yelled angrily "Dude! why are you getting so worked up, I mean you have a girlfriend don't you?" I took a step back, eyes narrowing slightly as I watched Adrian's reaction. "A girlfriend who's sleeping over at your place, if I recall," I said, my tone laced with amusement, pushing his buttons further. "So, what's the deal, Adrian? You got feelings for Kai or something?" I asked, throwing the question out there, watching how he would react. Adrian's face turned red, and for a moment, I thought he was gonna punch me. His fists were clenched, and he looked like he was about to explode. "Shut up, Edward," he growled, his voice low and menacing, before turning to storm off. I chuckled, watching him go, a satisfied smile still on my face. Oh, this is gonna be fun. Guess I've hit a nerve. Now, back to Kai... I turned my attention back to my plan for the day, wondering how Kai's gonna react when I pick her up later. I leaned back against the locker, eyes following Adrian's retreating form, a thoughtful expression settling on my face. So, he's got feelings for Kai?. Well there is only one way to find out. I pulled out my phone and texted Kai: "Still on for coffee ?" She replied almost instantly. "Yep, see you then." Now, let's see how this plays out. I pushed off the locker and headed to my next class, a plan forming in my mind. Time to get to know Kai better...and maybe stir things up with Adrian some more. KAI'S POV Why the heck am I nervous? We're just going to grab coffee so it shouldn't be a big deal right? Gosh! Damn you Edward!! As the time roll over, I kept glancing at the Cafe entrance, I'm sure my colleagues noticed already. They always leave early so why the hell are they not leaving already?. I waited patiently for them to leave and fortunately for me they left giving their lame excuses like always. Just as I was about to turn to the changing room I saw Felix coming out. Oh gosh! How could I have forgotten about this annoying guy. He is the most sluggish human being I have ever seen.... Ugh, why am I still here?! Just leave already! I thought, rolling my eyes at my colleague Felix not-so-subtle lingering. "see you around Kai" he said with a small smile like always,i nodded in response. As the last of he finally waved goodbye and stepped out, I let out a sigh of relief. Okay, time to meet Edward. I checked my watch – 7:55 PM. Guess I'll just...grab my stuff and head out. I smoothed my hair, grabbed my bag, and headed for the door, trying to shake off this weird nervous vibe. "Ready to go?" I was startled by the sudden voice. This wasn't the voice I was expecting. Why the heck is Adrian here? I turned to face Adrian, a mix of surprise and amusement on my face as I tried to process why he was here. "Adrian, what are you doing here?" I asked, trying to sound casual despite the unexpected encounter. My mind was racing, thinking about how much I wanted to get out of there and meet Edward, but here was Adrian, showing up out of nowhere like he had a sixth sense. Adrian's eyes narrowed slightly as he glanced at the cafe entrance behind me, his expression a blend of concern and protectiveness. "Just making sure you're okay," he said, his voice low and sincere. "you think I don't know you plan to meet up with Edward." He took a step closer, his eyes locked on mine, searching for something. "You don't have to go meet him, you know. We can hang out instead." how the heck did he know? this asshole!! I raised an eyebrow, intrigued by his sudden interest in my plans. "Why not?" I asked, curiosity getting the better of me. TBC 💙💙
