Shenna's home in Manila Shenna sat at her kitchen table, sipping a cup of tea and glancing at the clock. Her son, Daniel, was at school, and she had a rare moment of peace in her usually hectic schedule. As a nurse, her days were filled with long hours and demanding work, but she found solace in helping others. Her best friend, Pilar, barged in with her characteristic energy, holding a laptop and a determined look. Pilar walked into the room with a concerned look on her face. "Shenna, we need to talk," she said, her voice soft but firm. Shenna looked up from her book, curiosity piqued. "What’s wrong, Pilar?" she asked. Pilar took a deep breath, preparing to discuss something important. Shenna raised an eyebrow, slightly amused. Shenna closed her book and set it aside. "What’s this about, Pilar?" she asked, concern creeping into her voice. Pilar hesitated for a moment, gathering her thoughts. Pilar set the laptop down on the table and sat across from Shenna. Pilar took a deep breath, her expression serious yet caring. "It’s about you, my dear friend. You’ve been single for five years now. You’ve focused so much on rebuilding your life and caring for your son. But it’s time you gave love another chance." She reached out, placing a reassuring hand on Shenna’s arm. Shenna sighed, taking another sip of her tea. Shenna sighed, her eyes reflecting a mix of sadness and resolve. "Pilar, you know my story. After everything I went through with my ex-husband, I’m not interested in dating. The thought of going through that kind of pain again is unbearable. I’m happy with my life as it is." She looked away, trying to mask the vulnerability in her voice. Pilar leaned in, her voice gentle but insistent. "I know your content, but content isn’t the same as happy. You deserve to be truly happy, Shenna. To have someone who appreciates and loves you. Someone who sees your worth and treats you the way you should be treated." She squeezed Shenna's hand, her eyes filled with compassion and hope. Shenna sighed, looking down at her hands. "I have Daniel. He’s all the happiness I need. My son is my world, Pilar. I don't need anyone else to complete my life." Pilar reached out and gently touched Shenna's arm. "Daniel is wonderful, but he can’t fulfill the role of a partner. You need someone who can be there for you in ways that Daniel can’t. Someone to share your burdens and joys, someone to hold you at night. You deserve that kind of love, Shenna." Shenna sighed, her eyes reflecting a mix of fear and determination. "I don’t want to go through the pain of betrayal again. I’ve built a stable life for myself and Daniel. I don’t want to risk that. The thought of opening my heart only to have it shattered once more terrifies me. It’s safer this way, Pilar." Pilar reached across the table and took Shenna’s hand. Pilar reached out, placing a comforting hand on Shenna’s arm. "I understand your fear, Shenna. But not every man is like your ex. There are good men out there who would treat you with the respect and love you deserve. You shouldn’t let one bad experience define your entire future. Give yourself the chance to find real happiness." Shenna sighed; her frustration evident. "And where exactly am I supposed to find these good men? In the hospital? Between shifts? My life is too hectic for dating." Pilar pointed to the screen with a grin. "That’s where this comes in. We’ll make sure your profile reflects the real you." Shenna nodded hesitantly, feeling a mixture of apprehension and curiosity. Pilar opened the laptop, revealing a dating app interface. "Here’s a start," she said, smiling encouragingly. "This app is for people serious about finding a genuine connection." Shenna raised an eyebrow, intrigued but skeptical. Shenna crossed her arms and shook her head. "Oh no, Pilar. No way. I’m not doing online dating." She glanced at the screen, a mixture of disbelief and amusement on her face. "I can't believe you think this is a good idea." Pilar leaned forward; eyes bright with enthusiasm. "Why not? It’s how people meet these days. It’s efficient, and you can weed out the ones who don’t interest you without wasting time." She pointed to the screen, scrolling through profiles. "Look at this—people from all walks of life, looking for genuine connections." Shenna sighed, crossing her arms. "It feels so... artificial. How can you really know someone through a screen?" She glanced skeptically at the profiles on the laptop. Pilar leaned in closer, her eyes filled with sincerity. "You’d be surprised. You can learn a lot about a person by how they communicate. And it’s not like you have to marry the first guy you talk to. It’s just a way to meet new people and see what’s out there. Give it a chance, Shenna." Shenna sighed; her hesitation clear. "I don’t know, Pilar. I’m really skeptical about this." She glanced at the laptop screen, feeling uncertain. "Just give it a chance. What’s the worst that can happen? If you don’t like it, you can delete the profile and go back to your life. But what if you do meet someone amazing? Isn’t that worth the risk?", Pilar said Shenna looked at Pilar, seeing the genuine concern and hope in her friend’s eyes. Shenna took a deep breath, conceding. "Alright, alright. I’ll give it a shot. But I’m not making any promises." She gave Pilar a hesitant smile. Pilar grinned widely. "That’s all I’m asking for!" She gave Shenna a supportive hug, excitement radiating from her. Pilar’s face lit up as she began typing on the laptop, setting up Shenna’s profile. Pilar opened the dating app and started typing. "Let’s start with the basics. Name: Shenna. Age: 41. Location: Manila." She looked up at Shenna with a reassuring smile. "See, nothing too scary so far." Shenna glanced at the screen, then back at Pilar. "This feels so strange," she said with a nervous chuckle. "I can't believe I’m actually doing this." Pilar smiled reassuringly. "Trust me, you’ll get used to it," she said, typing away. "Now, what about your interests? What should we put here?" She paused, waiting for Shenna to respond. "You know, the things you love doing outside of work." Shenna took a deep breath and began, "I enjoy reading, especially mystery novels. They help me unwind after long shifts." She paused, gathering her thoughts. "I love spending time outdoors, hiking when I can. It's my way of staying connected to nature." Her voice softened as she continued, "I also have a soft spot for cooking, trying out new recipes is always fun. And of course, I’m passionate about my work as a nurse, it’s more than just a job to me." Pilar smiled and said, "Perfect. Now, let’s talk about what you’re looking for in a partner. What qualities are important to you? What kind of person do you want to meet?" Shenna thought for a moment, considering what truly mattered to her. "Someone who is kind, patient, and understanding. Someone who respects my work and my responsibilities as a mother. And honesty is non-negotiable." Pilar nodded as she typed. "Got it. Kind, patient, understanding, respectful of your work, and honest. Anything else we should add?" She looked up, waiting for Shenna's response. Pilar typed away, adding the details to the profile. "Now, let’s add some photos. You have that lovely picture from Daniel’s birthday party. And the one from our trip to Tagaytay?" Shenna sighed, leaning back in her chair. "Alright, but nothing too flashy. I want to keep it genuine." She glanced at the laptop screen. "I don’t want to attract the wrong kind of attention." Pilar smiled reassuringly, "Don't worry, Shenna. We’ll keep it simple and true to who you are." Pilar selected the photos and uploaded them to the profile. Pilar clicked the final button with a flourish. "And we’re live! Now we wait and see who reaches out." Shenna sighed, half-relieved and half-nervous. "I can’t believe I’m actually doing this." "This is so surreal. I can’t believe I’m actually doing this. Online dating felt like such a distant concept to me. But here I am, taking the plunge." Shenna said Pilar looked at Shenna with a mixture of pride and encouragement. "You’re taking a brave step, Shenna. I’m proud of you. This isn't easy, but it's worth trying. And who knows? Maybe this is the beginning of something wonderful." She smiled warmly, hoping to instill confidence in her friend as they ventured into this new chapter together. Shenna's response was laced with skepticism as she replied, "We'll see, Pilar. We'll see." She wasn't convinced by Pilar's plan, and her tone suggested that she needed more convincing. As Pilar closed the laptop, Shenna felt a mixture of apprehension and curiosity. The idea of finding love again was daunting, but with Pilar by her side, she felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, this unconventional step would lead her to the happiness she had long thought was out of reach.
