Chapter One "Do you want to get some ice cream on our way back?" Suzy's head bounced up and down as she beamed at her father whose eyes were fixed on the road in front of him. Ice cream was Suzy's favorite thing in the entire world and she couldn't believe her dad was going to get her some. "Yes, Daddy!" Suzy practically screamed, earning herself a giggle from her dad. Her excitement was radiating all over the car and he knew he had made the right call but it was also a way to distract her from the chaos that was going on in his head and his life. It was annoying enough that he had fallen out of the Alpha's good graces and had been reduced to an Omega but Rosemary had decided this was the time she wanted to be a pain in the ass. Just as Manuel was thinking of ways to mend things with his wife, the phone suddenly started ringing. "Daddy, your phone is ringing," Suzy pointed out, shifting her attention to the phone sitting on the dashboard. "Should I get it for you?" Being the seven year old child that sge was, the question was accompanied with action and before Manuel could tell her off, she had flicked the seatbelt off. "Suzy, NO!!!... " That was all Manuel could get out as he reached for Suzy—abandoning the steering wheel—before they hauled head on into a moving truck. The world quickly went dark but unknown to Suzy, it was going to be that way for a long time… **"PRESENT DAY*** Watching the children leave was a process Rosemary had had to go through over and over again, It was something she was supposed to have gotten used to but it always felt like her world was been ripped apart all over again. It almost felt like she was back there, where it had all gone wrong. Without warning, Rosemary felt herself spiralling back. It was as if she was once again moving back in time to the cold atmosphere of the hospital, to the beeping sounds of the machines and to her screams of pleas that had enveloped the entire hallway… "Can't you do something, doctor?! Rosemary's voice rang out of the room and into the hallway of the hospital, pulling the attention of everyone present, including the doctor's. "I need you to save my daughter and my husband!" There was urgency in her tone and tears had momentarily blurred her vision. "I want to help you, Mrs Mann," the doctor responded, shooting her a look of pure sympathy as he made for the door. "But you have to pay the deposit first before I can do anything else" He paused at the door, gave one last look at his patients before exiting the room. As much as he wanted to offer assistance, Doctor Alex was left with no choice but to follow the hospital's strict policy. Treating the dying father and daughter duo was well within his power but without authorization from the hospital, he was as powerless as the woman crying in the room. Tears wasn't a known currency. Just like Doctor Alex, Rosemary Mann couldn't believe she would have to watch her husband die and her daughter go blind right in front of her. She had tried to raise the money the hospital had demanded but the resources at her disposal had already been disposed of. There was nothing left for her to do. Being part of an omega family, Rosemary had been turned back when she had approached other families in the clan seeking financial assistance. It wasn't her fault that she was who she was and her family wasn't supposed to be suffering like they were. But what else was she supposed to do? "Don't cry, mummy," Rosemary heard her daughter's tiny voice float towards her from where the little creature was lying, plugged to multiple machines with a bandage wrapped around her head. "I'm feeling so much better, mummy." It was an obvious lie and Rosemary felt a fresh batch of tears well up in her eyes. Sniffling loudly, she cautiously approached her overly optimistic little girl. Any seven year old who had just been involved in such a ghastly accident and was momentarily blind, would be wailing but not Susan. Suzy was strong, she had always been strong and Rosemary was grateful to the goddess for giving her such an amazing daughter. Rosemary plastered a fake smile on her face as she sat carefully on the bed, reaching for Suzy's hand. ", How are you feeling, my sweet girl?" The moment the question left her mouth, Rosemary felt the intense urge to face palm herself—hard. It was quite clear to anyone that Suzy was anything but fine. "I'm feeling so much better, ma," Suzy repeated as if she had stayed up all night memorizing the words. "Will you stop crying, mummy?" Rosemary could see concern written all over her little girl's face and she unconsciously nodded affirmatively. It was hard to believe Suzy was more concerned about her instead of herself. "I'm not crying, Suzy," Rosemary replied softly, stifling her sobs. As much as she wanted to be strong for her daughter, it was harder than anything she had ever tried to do. Her children were seated at home, waiting for her to return home with their dad and sister but that was very unlikely. "I really want to help you, Mrs Mann but this is out of my control." the doctor's voice rang in Rosemary's head as she watched her daughter force a smile on her fragile face. All this was supposed to have been over but the hospital had stuck by their word. They wouldn't be able to continue treatment if she didn't somehow find a way to raise the huge amount of money that was needed. She had been given less than twenty-four hours to do something or they would be plugged out of every equipments they had been placed on. Unlike Suzy who was stable, Manuel—her husband—was deteriorating and he needed the machines to sustain him for as long as possible or else he was going to… "Excuse me," A nurse poked her head through the door with a pile of folders in her arms. "I was asked to check in on you in regards to the payment… " her voice trailed off when she noticed tears streaming down Rosemary's face. The answer was quite clear but the nurse was also powerless. With a slight nod, she withdrew her head, closing the door after her. Rosemary waited till the nurse left before dragging her exhausted body out of the bed, making a beeline for the door. She wasn't going to stand by and watch her husband die, there had to be something she could do… "I have to be there, mum," Suzy's not-so little voice dragged Rosemary back to the present and to her living room where her children were standing in front of her, eager to be on their way for the event they had been raving about. "You know this is the only thing I can do to help the family." Suzy was leaning over the doorframe, flagged by her little brother and supported by her stick, Rosemary felt her heart sink into her stomach at the sight. "This isn't ideal for you, Suzy," she responded absently, shaking her head as she quickly reminded herself that Suzy was safe and they were no longer in the hospital—it was all a memory. Not only was Suzy safe from all that hassle, she was no longer seven years old and locking her away from the world wasn't doing much good. "You need to stay safe, Suzy. The outside world isn't a safe place for you." It was hard convincing a teenager about the dangers of the world but it was a mother's job to do so. "I need to do this, mum," Suzy countered, standing firm on her decision. "The Beta family is hosting an event and you know they'll pay me well if I perform for them. Let me do this, ma." It was a good opportunity to earn and also gain access to a bigger audience—Suzy wasn't ready to let such an opportunity get past her. It was very clear that Suzy's mind had been made up and nothing she was going to say would change the girl's mind, so Rosemary dragged a deep breath and pulled herself away from the couch. "Are you sure about this?" She inquired softly when she got close enough to Suzy. Suzy answered hastily, "Yes mummy," her eyes darted around the room unnecessarily and Rosemary moved closer to her, pulling her into a tight hug. "I'll be fine, you don't have to worry." Her voice was merely a whisper as she struggled to let the words out amidst her mum's crushing embrace. Letting go of her, Rosemary took a step backwards as tears welled up in her eyes once again before turning her attention to her youngest and only son. "Take care of your sister, okay?" He nodded vigorously, allowing a bright smile to accompany the action. "And take care of yourself."
