THE LIFE SHE STOLE
Chapter One: The Beginning of the End Lagos, Nigeria – 2026 The hospital corridor was eerily quiet. Cassandra stood motionless, clutching a brown envelope so tightly that the edges had become crumpled in her sweaty hands. Her heart raced as she watched Adela walk toward her with her usual confident smile. "There you are," Adela said warmly. "I've been looking everywhere." Cassandra didn't smile back. "We need to talk." Adela's eyes fell on the envelope. "What is that?" Cassandra slowly raised it. "The DNA results." For the first time in years, Adela's smile disappeared. "I know the truth." Silence. "You stole my life." Adela stared at her without blinking. "My parents..." Cassandra whispered, struggling to hold back tears. "They're my parents. They always were." A bitter laugh escaped Adela's lips. "It's all your fault." Cassandra looked at her in disbelief. "My... fault?" "If you had never existed, none of this would've happened!" Adela shouted, her voice echoing through the hospital corridor. "Do you know how hard I fought to keep everything? Do you know what I sacrificed?" Doctors, nurses, and visitors stopped to watch. Cassandra's voice trembled. "I trusted you." "And that was your biggest mistake." The words pierced Cassandra's heart. The girl she had called her sister... The girl who had promised to protect her... ...had been lying to her all along. Tears blurred Cassandra's vision as memories from fifteen years ago flooded back. --- Fifteen Years Earlier... 2011 St. Mary's Orphanage was always filled with laughter. Among all the children, two girls were inseparable. Cassandra was quiet, timid, and kind. She disliked arguments and often hid behind Adela whenever someone teased her. Adela was bold, fearless, and full of confidence. She never allowed anyone to bully Cassandra. "If anyone wants to hurt you," she would say proudly, "they'll have to deal with me first." Because of that, everyone believed they were more than friends. They were sisters by heart. There was also a boy named Ethan. He secretly liked Cassandra. He admired her gentle smile and her kind heart, but every time he wanted to tell her how he felt, fear stole his courage. Instead, he quietly showed his affection in little ways—saving her a seat during meals, helping her carry books, or leaving wildflowers where only she would find them. Life at St. Mary's Orphanage was peaceful. The children attended school together, played football in the dusty playground, climbed mango trees, and shared dreams of one day finding families to call their own. Everything changed one sunny afternoon. A luxurious black SUV drove through the orphanage gates. A wealthy couple stepped out. The woman held back tears as she spoke to the orphanage owner. "We're looking for the daughter we abandoned years ago. We were young, scared, and irresponsible. We had nothing then. Now we've spent years searching for her." The orphanage owner listened quietly. After hearing their story, he agreed to help. Before the couple left, he collected DNA samples from both of them and assured them he would contact them as soon as the results were ready. The couple thanked him and drove away. Adela had overheard the entire conversation. She hurried to find Cassandra. "A rich couple came looking for the child they abandoned years ago," she said excitedly. Cassandra simply smiled. "I hope they find her." She wasn't thinking about herself. She genuinely hoped another child would finally have a family. The other children, however, had different opinions. "They look just like Cassandra," one girl whispered. "They have the same eyes," another added. "They even smile the same way." Cassandra laughed shyly. "You're all imagining things." But Adela didn't laugh. Something strange settled in her heart. Jealousy. She didn't understand why she suddenly felt afraid. Later that evening, the orphanage owner sat alone in his office. Something about the little girl named Cassandra reminded him of someone. A thought he couldn't ignore entered his mind. Just to be certain, he made a decision. Without telling anyone, he collected DNA samples from Cassandra and Adela. Then... He submitted one final sample. His own. No one knew what he had done. Not Cassandra. Not Adela. Not even the orphanage staff. Days turned into weeks. Then, one quiet afternoon, the laboratory delivered the results. The orphanage owner closed his office door and stared at the sealed envelope resting on his desk. Slowly, he opened it. He read the first report. His eyes widened. "No..." He quickly reached for the second report. His breathing became uneven. "This... this can't be..." He sank into his chair, reading the documents again and again. One child was the biological daughter of the wealthy couple. The other... ...was his own daughter. Outside his office window, Cassandra and Adela laughed together, completely unaware that their lives were about to change forever. The truth was sitting on the desk. A truth that would one day destroy a beautiful friendship... ...steal one girl's identity... ...and begin a story neither of them could ever escape. End of Chapter One
