13. Blue Rain

    A few weeks passed, and no calls came to claim Buster. It was now late January. The puppy and I were instant friends. Jacob, however, did not take to the puppy so quickly. Nor did Buster take to him. However, I watched them, day by day, slowly become accustomed to each other. One morning, I crept out of my room, hearing Jacob’s voice in the living room. I found him sitting on the floor, his face pressed to Buster’s.     “Why do you breathe so weird?” He asked the puppy. “It is because your nose is pressed down like this? Let me fix it.”     Jacob pushed Buster’s nose up. Buster scrunched up his face and tried to pull back, alarmed by this. I saw Jacob frown as the puppy pulled away. He moved closer to the puppy and tried it again. Buster whimpered, looked up, and scampered over to me
