The project consumed their days and often stretched into long nights. The office, once bustling with activity, grew eerily quiet after hours, leaving Karen and Mark in a cocoon of shared purpose.
During one of these late-night sessions, Mark leaned back in his chair, looking more vulnerable than she had ever seen him. “Do you ever feel like... you’re chasing something you’ll never catch?” he asked, his voice really low .
Karen glanced up from her laptop, startled by his candor. “All the time,” she admitted.
"Thanks for being honest Karen",he said with a smile on his face.
"It's alright. It's the least I could do. ", She said as she stared at his well crafted face.
"Do you wanna get ice cream with me probably after work tomorrow? I mean, we have been putting in a lot of work and I think a break won't kill anyone. Right?,"He said staring right back at her.
She broke the connection as she looked down at Laptop once again.
"Yes, that will be great", she responded pretending to be really uninterested.
"Ok, that's it then. I also think you should head home now. I will be waiting for you downstairs at the garage,"he said as he stood up from his seat.
"Yh, I'll catch up with you,"she responded with a huge smile on her face.
Behind that beautiful smile was the fact that they were going out together. It was something she really desired although she pretended to be uninterested.
From that moment, it was like the professional lines between them blurred and was replaced by a strong connection which felt both exhilarating and forbidden.
