Stranger in the Storm
"Need some help?" Karen froze mid-step, her umbrella flipping inside out against the torrential rain. She squinted through the downpour, the voice cutting through the chaos of the storm like a knife. A man stood under a dim streetlight a few feet ahead, his tailored suit soaked but still somehow impeccable. She gripped the useless umbrella tighter. "Depends," she said cautiously, her eyes scanning the alley. "Are you offering or asking?". The stranger chuckled, a warm, low sound that seemed oddly out of place in the cold rain. "Offering. You look like you're one gust of wind away from being swept into the river." Karen hesitated but took a step forward. The rain was relentless, and her shortcut through this alley was now feeling like a terrible idea. As she approached, she took in his sharp jawline, the way his wet hair clung to his forehead, and his piercing eyes—steady and calm despite the storm. "I'm fine," she said, brushing past him. "Sure you are," he replied, following her with his gaze. "Name's Mark , by the way." She stopped and turned. "Karen." "Well, Karen," he said, leaning slightly against the lamppost. "you might want to rethink the heels next time." Karen glanced down at her soaked stilettos, the heel of one wobbling slightly on the slick pavement. She would have shot back a witty response, but before she could, her ankle twisted, sending her stumbling forward. Mark was there in an instant, his arm steadying her. "Got you," he said softly. She muttered a thank you, embarrassed but grateful. "You always stand around in alleys waiting to rescue people, or am I just lucky tonight?" Mark smiled, his teeth flashing briefly in the dim light. "Just passing through. Guess it’s your lucky night." The rain continued to fall, but for a moment, Karen felt an odd warmth despite the cold. "Stay safe," he said, releasing her arm and stepping back. "The city can be... unpredictable." With that, he turned and walked away, leaving Karen standing in the rain, her heart pounding for reasons she couldn’t quite explain. She had no idea their paths would cross again, this time in a way that would change everything.
