Chapter One
ELARA
I would have laughed if anyone had told me that I would spend my wedding day standing in front of an altar, surrounded by half of the Frostvale Pack, while the man I was supposed to marry was nowhere to be found.
I gripped my bouquet nervously until the stem dug painfully into my palms. I barely felt it. My gaze was focused on the large clock behind the priest, counting as each of the twenty minutes had gone by. “Where are you, Ronan.” I whispered, barely recognizing my own voice.
The murmur around me had grown much louder than they had begun. Everyone was already developing one theory or another to come up with.
The priest shifted beside me, his nervous gaze moving between me and the entrance. “Luna, perhaps you should wait in the dressing room,” he murmured. “Alpha Ronan may simply be running late.”
That title, Luna, which always made my heart flutter now felt like a burning reminder that the man who was supposed to give me this title wasn’t here yet.
I forced a smile.
I turned to look at my family and the only one seated there was my grandfather, Garrick Woods, who sat with his arms crossed over his chest, his jaw clenched as he stared towards the entrance. He looked livid. Even my bridesmaid, my cousin Brielle was nowhere in sight, she must have left since she hated crowds.
Somehow, the knot in my stomach tightened more. I had waited twelve years for this very day and this day three years ago, the Moon Goddess confirmed my childhood sweetheart, Ronan, was my mate. I was overjoyed. I waited till the day we would finally tie the knot.
Tears streamed down my cheeks as I headed out of the hall. I could hear the priest trying to explain to the pack members that there was a little delay from a distance. My heels clicked against the floor as tears streamed down freely beneath my veil. I was sure my make-up would be smudged now.
What if something had happened to Ronan? What will happen to me? I couldn’t imagine the humiliation I would get. I had spent years being treated differently because I was Ronan Frost, the next Alpha’s mate. Doors had opened for me, Elders had smiled at me. Even wolves who didn’t particularly like me had been careful with their words because one day, I would be their Luna.
But what if Ronan never shows up?
My feet took me towards the dressing room. I absentmindedly twisted the doorknob but paused as I heard a familiar voice inside. Brielle?
“Mhmm… Ronan.” I heard her say. “Why do you have to marry her? You like… mhnnn… me instead.”
My entire body froze at her words. What on earth was going on? My own cousin… and… I silently prayed to the moon goddess that it wasn’t my Ronan. In a pack of thousands of people, there was no chance that someone else wouldn’t be called Ronan, was there?
“You’re distracting me from your body, Brielle.” There was no mistake in the voice. It was my mate. The man I had been waiting twenty minutes for at the altar.
A lump formed in my throat, tears burning my eyes as I turned the doorknob open. If anyone had told me Ronan would cheat on me, I would have asked that the person be tortured to death, but here I was, staring at my mate half naked with my cousin in my dressing room. As though they were waiting for my arrival.
“Ronan…” I called as our eyes met. “H-how could you, Ronan?” I tried my best not to scream. This was the man I had devoted twelve years of my life to, shamelessly being intimate with my cousin and the worst of all, he just stared back at me as though it was all normal.
“Why are you here?” he asked, throwing his shirt on with a sigh. For the first time in my life, I had experienced what others said about my mate’s body gestures. If he was irritated with you, his composure shows it.
“You left me standing at the altar for twenty minutes, Ronan. In front of half of the pack.” I screamed, tears clouding my eyes, choking on my own words. “A-and you’re here with Brielle. Brielle.”
“Oh, the wedding…” was all Ronan said before turning back to look at me. “Let’s call the wedding off.”
I felt like a huge truck had hit me and the entire room was spinning. Did I just hear him correctly? “C-call off the wedding? R-Ronan, we’ve been together twelve years and have been waiting for this day since we were kids. How could you say…”
“Brielle is pregnant with my child.” He dropped the bombshell on me. My gaze moved between Brielle who stood there without any remorse in her look. “I was going to tell you, but it just reached this point. Let’s go.”
Ronan headed out of the room, almost dragging me along. For the first time, I saw the side of this man I had never seen in my entire life. “R-Ronan, what are you doing? You seriously can’t mean calling the wedding off? Please. What will everyone say?” I tried holding back my tears but even I didn’t make sense to myself.
The doors to the hall were pushed open and the once rowdy place suddenly became quiet as we entered. I could see the eyes of everyone as Ronan pushed me to my knees before the priest.
“Y-your lordship?” The priest’s nervous voice wasn’t hidden as he stared between my mate and I. “W-what…”
“I, Ronan Frost, reject Elara Woods as my fated mate and Luna. You are to accept the severing of the bond and I will be getting married to Brielle today as she is with my child.”
I felt a pang cut deeply through my chest, my hand found its way to my chest, clutching my dress tightly. I felt as though air had been knocked out of my lungs and I could die at any moment. Was this how I would lose my life?
