Chapter 1
Nico's POV:
My black Benz SUV parked in front of my first stop for debt collection today.
I started a hobby of giving out loans to regular people so I could have something else to give my attention to besides the Italian mafia and the intense regrets that showed up in my dreams every night.
My worst mistake. The one that still haunts me.
I buttoned up my suit as I stepped out of the car, the door already held open for me. The thought continued to weigh on my mind as I walked toward the door. The Russian mafia had been making multiple assassination attempts on my life, but it was obvious he was trying to provoke me into a war, and that was the last thing I wanted. I have already given so much to ensure the peace we have, and I won't be foolish enough to be the one to break it. I needed a way to get rid of the boss without it being linked to me.
A secret assassination, maybe? But by who?
Two knocks from Davinci, and the door opened to reveal the most beautiful woman I had ever laid my eyes on. She looked so fragile and pale, probably from staying indoors all the time or simply not having enough to eat. Her big eyes were filled with fear as she took in our presence.
“Who… who are you?” she stammered.
I was growing impatient, so I signaled to Davinci, and he pushed her out of the way. Even though he pushed her gently, she completely fell over. I knew it. She’s severely malnourished.
I walked into the house and took my seat on the sofa, placing both hands on the handle and crossing my legs. My eyes briefly shifted to her, still lying on the floor, before I told my men to bring down the debtors. They reappeared minutes later with the husband, wife, and their daughter. I looked at the girl again where she was still there on the floor. I wonder who that one is to them.
“You promised to pay back the $750K loan you took from me by 12 p.m. today, but it’s already 1 p.m Mr. Davis."
They were shaking in fear as they held on to each other. The husband stepped forward with both hands stretched out in front of him. I already knew what was coming, so I silenced him before he could even say it. “Don’t. If it’s not about paying me my money right now, I don’t want to hear it.”
“I tried really hard to have the money ready today, but the business I used it for didn’t do well. Please, Mr. Moretti.”
“So you need more time?”
“Yes. More time.”
They were all the same. They come to you in desperation and never pay back the money at the agreed time. “I’ll give you more time, but I’ll need collateral.”
“C-Collateral?”
I looked over at their daughter and pointed at her. “Like your daughter here. She could work at my hotel until you pay me back. And if you’re lucky, she might work hard enough to help you repay the debt.”
He held his daughter tightly. “No. Not my daughter.”
The mother stood up quickly and rushed over to grab the girl before they both knelt in front of me. “You can take our second daughter as collateral.”
Confused, I ask “She’s your daughter? Not a maid?”
“No, sir. She’s our first daughter.”
She looked up, and I took my time really looking at her. Long hair. Luscious lips and a face that could start a war. I tried my best to stop the smile from forming as my thoughts began to take shape. She was the answer.
“I’ll take her.” I could feel Davinci's thoughts from where he was standing behind me. He probably thinks I’m crazy, but he’ll understand when I tell him about my plans.
She trailed closely behind me as we walked toward the car. Davinci opened the door, and I motioned for her to get in. She climbed in quickly, and I followed. She was tense and flighty. Like a frightened animal waiting for the next thing to hurt her. I could tell she had been through a lot.
“Can..can I ask what I’m going to be doing?” Her voice was so low, I could barely hear here.
I turned to face her and she flinched, “You’re going to be training.”
The confusion on her face was so clear “Training?” She asked.
“Yes. You’re going to become my secret weapon.”
