Part :1 The Meeting
It was the middle of a sweltering summer when Ava first met Jason and Liam. The heat was thick, pressing against the city like a weight no one could escape. For Ava, that summer marked the end of her first year at college, the beginning of her independence. She had moved to the bustling city of Richmond, where the streets never seemed to sleep, and everything was new and full of possibility.
Ava had always been the quiet, observant type—content to stand on the sidelines, absorbing the energy around her. She wasn't the kind of girl to seek attention, but attention always seemed to find her. With long, dark hair that cascaded over her shoulders, bright hazel eyes, and a certain quiet grace about her, she often turned heads without realizing it.
That particular evening, she was attending a friend’s rooftop party. The air was thick with laughter, the scent of grilled food, and the sound of music. The city lights below them twinkled like stars, casting a soft glow over everything. Ava stood by the edge of the rooftop, looking out at the skyline, feeling the warm breeze in her hair.
And that’s when she met Jason.
Jason was tall, with a casual confidence that made him hard to ignore. His light brown hair was slightly tousled, and his piercing blue eyes seemed to see right through people. He carried an air of mystery, the kind of guy who could say a thousand words without speaking. He approached Ava with a quiet smile, holding two beers, and offered one to her.
“I thought you might want one,” he said, his voice deep and smooth.
Ava turned, caught off guard by his sudden presence. She smiled politely, accepting the beer. “Thanks.”
“I’m Jason,” he said, leaning casually against the railing beside her. His eyes never left hers, as if he was trying to figure her out.
“Ava,” she replied softly.
They talked for hours that night, their conversation flowing effortlessly. Jason was charming and enigmatic, making Ava laugh with his dry wit and surprising her with his deep thoughts about life, dreams, and the future. He had a way of making her feel like she was the only person in the world, like everything else faded into the background when they were talking.
But as the night wore on, and the party started to thin out, another presence emerged.
Liam had been a part of Ava's life for years. He was the boy next door, her childhood friend, and the one constant in her life through every change. With his warm brown eyes, messy black hair, and infectious smile, Liam was everything Jason wasn’t—open, honest, and unapologetically himself. He had a certain ruggedness about him, not the kind of boy who cared much about appearances, but someone who cared deeply about people.
He wasn’t supposed to be at the party that night, but when he saw Ava’s text about it, he decided to come by and surprise her. As soon as he stepped onto the rooftop, his eyes immediately found her—and Jason standing beside her.
For a split second, Liam’s heart sank. He watched as Ava smiled at something Jason said, and a surge of emotions swept through him—jealousy, confusion, and something deeper, something that had been building inside him for years.
Liam had always been in love with Ava. He just never had the courage to tell her.
Walking over, Liam forced a smile and waved, calling out her name. “Ava!”
Ava turned, her face lighting up as she saw him. “Liam! I didn’t know you were coming!” She moved forward and hugged him, the familiarity of their friendship washing over her.
Jason watched the interaction, his eyes narrowing slightly. He could tell from the way Ava greeted Liam that they were close—too close. But he said nothing, simply leaning back and observing.
“This is Jason,” Ava introduced them after the hug, noticing the tension but ignoring it. “We were just talking.”
Jason extended his hand, and Liam took it, though the handshake was firmer than necessary. “Nice to meet you,” Jason said, though the words felt hollow.
“Likewise,” Liam replied, his eyes locking with Jason’s for a moment longer than necessary.
The rest of the evening was awkward. Ava could feel the unspoken rivalry simmering between the two men, even though neither said a word about it. Jason stayed close to her, always finding ways to make her laugh or engage her in conversation, while Liam tried his best to be his usual charming self, though his mind was elsewhere.
By the time the party ended, Ava was left feeling conflicted. Jason intrigued her, drawing her in with his mysteriousness and intensity, but Liam... Liam was her rock, the one person she could always count on. She never thought of him in a romantic way, but something about his presence that night felt different. There was a subtle shift in their dynamic, something she couldn’t quite put her finger on.
As she lay in bed that night, staring up at the ceiling, Ava’s mind swirled with thoughts of both men. She knew this summer was going to be different, that something had changed, and there was no going back.
