Chapter 1 - Jessica Spikes
Her father was a werewolf, her mother was a human, but Jessica has some features of both her parents. She was not a werewolf. She was born human, but she has werewolf genes. She had her mother small frame, caramel hair and soft creamy skin. She had big brown eyes like her father and due to the werewolf genes she was extremely beautiful with toned body. But this was all of the werewolf perks she has. Her speed, her senses and her strength were normal, humanly normal.
Most of the werewolves shift for the first time at the age of 13 but Jessica hasn't that privilege. She would be able to shift and find her wolf only when her mate mark her.
Jessica was born in The Crooked Fields pack at the end of the summer when the moon was full. But despite of the Moon Goddess blessing nothing in her life looked whole and complete. She was not fully a werewolf, she was always feeling that there is a missing part of her. To add more her family was not whole. Her mother and father were separated. Yes, they were destined mates but her mother couldn't get used to the life in the pack. The others didn't agreed to have a human as a part of their pack and kept thinking that she will make them weaker. So Jessica's mother hasn't got many friends and despite the fact that the alpha accepted her in the pack she didn't feel at home. She didn't feel happy. She missed her parents and her job. She was an artist who had her own gallery in the city, but she left all to move to the pack territory and live with her mate. Jessica's father Nick was a warrior. He was very busy with his pack duties and couldn't go to the city. So when Jessica turn 6 and was going to start school her mother left the back and went back to the city. She sacrificed her relationship with her mate to have a chance to live happily among other humans who would not underestimate and humiliate her. Though she was missing her mate, she has her daughter, she had her friends and her work in the gallery and she was happy in some way.
Jessica lived with her mother but she was never missing to visit her father during the school breaks and some of the weekends.
Jessica's POV
It's my birthday today the 30th of August and I'm going to be sixteen now. At the age of 16 every werewolf become able to find their mate. Mates are very important in the werewolf world, they are the other half of you, persons that will make you complete and happy and you should love and cherish them for the rest of your life. For me it was even more important to find my mate cause it was the only way to connect with my wolf and have the ability to shift and become myself for real. But I haven't wolf senses so how I will find out who my mate is than? I guess it will be him who will find me.
"Where's my birthday girl?" - I heard my mom saying before entering my room. I just got dressed up and was ready to start the day (with a piece of cake preferably).
" Hi, mom! I'm ready for breakfast. - I greeted with a smile.
" Look at you, such a beautiful young lady!" - she coed.
I decided to wear a light blue summer dress with little pink belt which suited my pink sandals. My long locks were falling freely down my back in smooth beachy waves. My dress almost reached my knees and showed delicately my toned legs in a classy way. I was self confident enough so I didn't feel like wearing too revealing outfits just to gain boys'es attention on me like most of the girls at my age. I was pretty popular at my school in the city among the humans but I didn't pay much attention to the boys pursuing me cause I was waiting for my mate. Humans didn't know about werewolves existence so they just thought I'm a little bit too proud.
When I walked down the kitchen I was surprised by the decorations and the big cake waiting for me. Mom has done her best - the room was decorated with flowers and balloons and there were big golden numbers saying that I'm 16 now. But what caught my attention was the cake. It was big and creamy with forest fruits and chocolates on top, so I couldn't wait to taste it.
After eating a decent amount of cake I was ready to pack my luggage for the weekend with my father. He was going to pick me up soon, so I thanked mom for the nice surprise and went to my room to pack. Dad was going to throw a party for my birthday at the packhouse where I invited all my werewolf friends. I was born and lived in the pack before I moved to the city with my mom and started human school so I have many friends back in the pack and I kept in touch with them regularly. My best friend Dorothy was also lived in the pack. I was eager to meet her an catch up with the latest news.
I was excited that I was going to celebrate my birthday at the pack territory, maybe I would find my mate today. But what than? What if he mark me immediately? Hell I have school to attend and many other stuff to do before settle with a mate and start breeding pups! I frowned at that thought. Maybe it would be better if I don't meet my mate today. But then what about my wolf I wouldn't be able to shift if I'm not marked. Maybe my mate would be understanding enough to wait for me to finish school and allow me to live in the city instead in the pack. But what if he is from another pack... It would be a disaster, I should move with him and leave all my life behind. No, it's my birthday today I shouldn't worry myself out, I should be happy and celebrating today.
The doorbell rang and I excitedly run downstairs to open the door. I knew it was dad. He greeted me with a large smile and huged me.
God, I missed him. I haven't seen him in two weeks. But now I will spend the next two days with him and will return to the city when it's time for school.
Dad greeted mom and went upstairs to get my luggage. I still could sense the tension between two of them. They were living separately but they still cared for each other and maybe loved each other or it was the mate bond that was messing with their feelings. But both of them were hurt and couldn't stop blaming the other for the separation. Dad was blaming mom for leaving him and going back to the city and mom was blaming dad for not coming with her. She kept saying that he chose his pack instead of her. But somehow they were able to keep the friendly tone for my sake and could spend some time together without killing each other.
"You are not leaving without I give you my present, are you?" - my mom asked with a smile. She put a small pink box with white bow in my hands.
"Ah!" - I gasped. It was a beautiful medallion with golden wolf and silver moon hanging on a delicate chain of white gold. "Thak you so much, mommy! It's gorgeous!"
"I know you haven't met your wolf yet but it's a part of your identity and I'm sure she will be a gorgeous and strong shewolf when you shift, whenever that happens. You just have to be patient enough and have the faith in your own abilities." - tears were pricking in her eyes. Dad hold her hand and smiled.
"Kate, you are doing a great job raising our beautiful daughter! She is turning to a smart and self confident young lady and I'm thankful for that but stop blaming yourself that she is half human because of you." - dad said and than turned to me. - "Let's go, Jess, you don't wanna make your mom cry over you birthday... and you haven't got my present yet."
Mom chuckled - "I'm sure it's gonna be a big surprise!" She winked and waved goodbye. I guess she knew what dad's doing to give me.
The ride to the pack territory was fast and silent. I was admiring the view from the window. The pack was situated about 150 km away from the city and we passed by a mountain and forests to go there. The road was small and empty. I guess only pack members knew about it. And here they are, the beautiful hills surrounding The Crooked Fields pack.
Dad reached his home and parked the car.
"Go greet your grandpa!" - he suggested.
My grandfather David Spikes was waiting outside the house in the beautiful garden. He was looking strong and young for his age even for a werewolf. He used to work for the alpha family and had his own weapon workshop but now he was retired and start leading simple life with gardening and breeding sheep's. Ha, The Woolf Shepard! It's funny. But since my dranma died due to a heartattack he always had his dark expression on his face. There was unspoken sorrow in his eyes and I knew there was nothing in this world that could ease his pain for losing his mate. So I didn't paid much attention when he acted odd and distant I guess he needed his own way to grief.
"Hi, Little Trouble!" - drandpa said with a grin. He gave me that nickname when I was 4. I was pretty stubborn kid and always find my ways to make mess out of everything. "Guess we have a very important celebration today!" - he said hugging me.
I entered the house and find a box with golden bow on the table in the living room.
"It's time for presents!" - dad said and I hurriedly unwrapped the box.
"New smartphone! Dad... thank you so much!"
"You deserve it, kid!" - drandpa chuckled. "I heard you passed all your exams with excellent grades and even had the best results in maths among the whole city. We are so proud of you, dear!"
"Thank you, grandpa!"
"She is smart just like her father, isn't she?" - dad said with pride. But grandpa hurried to silence him when he started telling about my father's awful grades and behavior when he was my age and that is my mother who helped him graduate with decent grades and stopped him fooling around and drinking with the young wolves. It's known my father was a player before he met mom and I'm sure he left many broken hearts. Even now at the age of 40, he looks great and I'm sure there are many shewolves trying to catch his heart but he thinks that his work is enough to keep him busy and doesn't need any females to stress him out. But the deep hidden truth is than he want only her - my mom and he isn't willing to start a relationship with someone who is not her.
"It's time to attend the party!" - dad said. "Guests must be arriving by now."
"They could wait, dad! I wanna check my new phone first."
A few minutes later I was ready to go to the packhouse. It was a place where usually the alpha family lived. But our alpha couple has their own mansion near the packhouse. So the packhouse was used only for parties and big occasions or when there were new pack members who hadn't their own homes yet.
The alpha couple as known as uncle George and Luna Jina were one of the most powerful and rich alphas in the country. They had loved each other and ruled the pack for almost 25 years. Their daughter Antoinette was 5 years older than me. She was studying abroad at Manchester University in England. She was known as wise and strong but she hadn't find her mate yet. Her brother Peter was the future alpha of the pack. He was 2 years younger than his sister and since a year he was attending training course for alphas. He used to practice with my father and spent a lot of time at home and we become very close friends, he was like a big brother to me but the last few years he was distant like he was avoiding me. He had turned 16 and haven't found his mate yet so the rumors said he was a player messing around with random girls. It doesn't sound like Peter I used to know but I guess that the sweet self organized and responsible boy just grew up and like most of the boys at his age prefers to spend his time partying and having fun with girls that are not his mate. Sometimes i really missed him by my side, it is a good thought to have a future alpha at my friends list. None of the alpha siblings were going to attend my birthday party so I was happy that there wouldn't be unnecessary fancies and my friends wouldn't be obsessed by catching the future alpha's attention.
The packhouse was decorated with lights and balloons. As expected when I entered my friends shouted "Surprise!". First floor was for the adults my father's friends were there and I spotted the alpha couple among them. I decided to go and greet them before going to the second floor where my friends were situated.
