The next week goes by in a blur, time seems to be speeding up and Aalyiah is getting restless. Knowing that there is only a week til her birthday she is looking forward to hearing her wolf speak to her for the first time. It is supposed to be a magical feeling. As she stretches out from a night of sleep, she hears a soft “hello”. Glancing around Aalyiah doesn't see anyone and knows that they wouldn’t come to the attic to her room unless someone needs something she shakes her head.
Getting dressed, Aalyiah glances into the mirror and notices her eyes look different than before. They were a sky blue but seemed to have turned more violet over night. Shaking her head she continues to get ready. When she opens the door she hears the voice again. Stopping and looking around she sees no one. Pausing she wonders…could it be my true birthday?
Closing her eyes and focusing on relaxing she looks deep in herself, there she sees her wolf's spirit with a wagging tail.
“Hey there! I have been waiting for you to realize it's me! I have seen your past through your memories. I also know that we are very special! Oh by the way, my name is Queenie! I was specially created just for you Aalyiah. We will be the best of friends,” the wolf spirit tells her.
Aalyiah in shock just stands there, then a slow smile spreads across her lips, “Welcome Queenie! I have been waiting for you. I am so happy to finally meet you! I can’t wait til we can get to know each other and get away from here. It will be a fun adventure.”
Laughing, Queenie says, “We will be able to shift on the next full moon. Then we can get away from here. You will be able to be who you were always meant to be. We just need to find our mate along the way. I can honestly say that based on your memories none of the male wolves here are good enough for us. We are very special, I am just not allowed to tell you much more due to you having to learn on your own. I am only allowed to guide but not interfere. Just know that I always have your back.”
Thinking through everything Aalyiah can only agree. It makes sense that she doesn’t belong here. She never felt like this pack was home to her. She has been looking forward to getting away and being free for as long as she can remember. Knowing that her future is looking brighter puts a little pep in her step on the way to the kitchen. Her and Queenie talk the whole way getting to know each other better. It is the best start to a day that Aalyiah has ever had.
After breakfast the males head out to the training grounds. After cleaning up the kitchen, Aalyiah decides to head out to the lake. Talking with Queenie makes her life seem a lot easier. She feels more free to be herself and not hide how she feels. Laying by the lake she learns more about Queenie. All of a sudden a smell catches her attention, looking around she sees nothing. Getting up slowly, she keeps her eyes peeled.
“To your left is a pack mate. Seems to be the future Alpha of the pack, the scent is off for some reason. Don’t trust him.” Is all Queenie says before hiding her presence. She isn’t sure what is going on but knows it is nothing good.
Aalyiah nods her head at future Alpha Alex. “Good morning. How can I help you today?”
Alex sneers and asks, “Why are you out here alone? Don’t you have things to do or are you slacking off?”
Aaliyah looked confused, “Why would I slack off? I have done all that has been asked of me for as long as I can remember? What is going on with you, Alex?”
Alex grabs her arm roughly and tugs her back towards the pack house, “If you have nothing else to do then I will find more jobs for you. Everyone else carries their own weight and it is time you get more chores.”
Aalyiah, refusing to be given more work pulled her arm out of his grasp. “Who do you think you are to me? You are not my mate and you won’t be. I will not be the Luna to a pack who can’t respect me and my choices. I have told you before that I will be leaving as soon as I can. That was not a joke.”
Keeping her calm, she looked straight into Alex’s eyes, not backing down. It has been too long since she has stood up for herself and now she remembers how nice it feels to know your own worth. Not wanting to dwell on the situation, Aalyiah decides that it is time to go ahead and leave here. There is no reason for her to stick around now that she has Queenie to help her out. Taking a deep breath, “Alex from today onwards I will not be part of this pack any longer. I am going to set out to find my mate and find a place that will be my home. A pack who will treat me like a part of the pack and not a maid. My time here has been enlightening but it is time for me to move on.”
Alex’s face turns red with anger, “Do you think you have that choice? You are not an adult and can’t come and go as you please. We took you in when you had no one else instead of letting you die in the woods. This is how you repay my father for his kindness? You still have over a week before the pack accepts that you are an adult, a lot can happen in that time period.”
Aalyiah blinks as she hears his words, what is he thinking? Has he completely lost his mind now? Shaking her head, “Alex, I am close enough to be able to leave on my own. I do not need parents to tell me how to live my life. I know my worth and it is more than what I am treated like here. I am not wanting to cause you or the Alpha problems, I just know my life is not meant to be spent here.”
Alex scoffs, “Just who exactly do you think you are? You think you are better than everyone else in this pack? Ha! We have given you shelter, food, clothing, and an education. If it wasn’t for us you wouldn’t be here!”
Sighing, Aalyiah realizes he isn’t even listening to her words and is just repeating what his father, the current Alpha, has said repeatedly. “Alex, I don’t want us to part on bad terms. We used to be friends and I would like us to keep that status. I have repaid every kindness shown to me here. I have helped take care of this pack for the past 5 years. At 13 I learned to cook to please you and your father. I started cleaning the pack house at 12. I have thanked everyone here for everything repeatedly throughout the years. The education you speak of was the elders teaching me to read and write. I was not allowed to go to the school so I wouldn’t distract the other kids for being an orphan. I will have everything set up so when I leave no one will have to go without. I have already been training a couple omegas to take over my job duties. All I have been waiting on is my birthday.”
Alex, at a complete loss for words, stares at Aalyiah. “Who are you? I thought we agreed to take care of the pack together when we were younger? Now you want to leave and have already prepared for others to take your position.”
Aalyiah shakes her head, “Those were promises made before we knew what we were getting into. After that is when you changed and started treating me like everyone else. I can’t go back to the way things were. You have said and done things that I will never be able to get over. I know that your father had a lot to do with it but you aren’t the same boy that I wanted to spend all my time with. I don’t know if the person you are becoming is best for us to part ways amicably.” Before he can respond, Aalyah turns around and walks away. She knows the best way for them to part is this way. Otherwise someone will say something that will hurt the other. She didn’t want to live the rest of her life with regrets. Looking forward to the future is all that she has ever truly had. She will not let her life be led without her choice. She has been on her own pretty much always, what's being alone now? Letting out a sigh, a smile slowly shows up on her face. She is ready to face the next stage in her life. To know that she can do whatever she puts her mind to and not just be told what she can and cannot do.
Entering her room in the attic, Aalyiah begins packing what few items she has. Just a few shirts and a few pairs of pants. She only has the shoes on her feet and a brush left to pack. Seeing how little she has, Aalyiah wonders if she should just leave it all behind and start over fresh. Deciding to sleep on it, she curls up in her bed and closes her eyes, as she drifts off she hears Queenie, “Don’t worry we will always have each other. Plus I know for sure that there are better places and things to experience. You have a lot to look forward to. Tomorrow is the full moon, we can leave as soon as I phase. I will explain more tomorrow. Good night!”
