Chapter One
Opening her eyes, Aalyiah looked around the quiet lake. If only things could stay this calm, but she knows that once she gets up and starts moving others will notice her. She has been labeled as an omega by the current Alpha. Although she feels no need to submit to anyone, they won’t allow a female to hold a higher title. Even Lunas in this pack aren’t held in high regard. Their belief is that males are all superior. Luckily, Aalyiah knows that in less than a month she will turn 18 and be able to leave this place behind. She doesn’t have to worry about leaving her family as she has none. She was found when she was a baby at the pack border. No one knew how she ended up there or where she came from. Her name was stitched into the embroidery on her blanket that was around her. Otherwise, who knows what she would have been called. Most females are just called Omega and hey you around here. You would think the males would have better respect as they need us females to produce the next generation.
Sadly, the alpha’s son isn’t any better than the rest here. He used to be a good friend when they were you, but once he started training more with his dad one on one, he has become just like the rest of them. Alex was a great friend before all the training. Being a female means no training. We are just supposed to cook and clean up after the males. Little does anyone know that she has been training the whole time. Alex started teaching her when he started, but slowly that ended as she was surpassing his abilities.
Glancing at the time, Aalyiah lets out a deep breath, time to go cook for the pack house. That is her job in the pack. They told her that cooking at the pack house covers the cost of giving her a room and clothes. Even if they are clothes that were left over from others who have passed on. Nothing she owns is new or in good shape. Most just cover her from prying eyes and make her feel invisible.
The past few days have been different from most, she feels stronger and more in control of her emotions. As her birthday gets closer, she can feel more strength coming in. Not understanding what is going on she just pushes it to the back of her mind. She knows she will get her wolf soon, but after everything, it doesn’t seem to be that big of a deal. She is scared her mate will be from this Goddess-forsaken pack. Not wanting to be trapped here any longer is her only wish.
After making dinner for the pack house, Aalyiah decides to go back out to the lake and enjoy the peaceful sunset. Watching the colors dance across the water brings her more comfort than sitting in a room full of people. No one here pretends to care or that they see anything. As the moon comes more into view, Aalyiah closes her eyes and prays to the Goddess that things will get better. She is tired of being everyone's slave and not having any say of her own life. Opening her eyes, she hears a twig snap and glances around. Out of the corner of her eye she sees Alex. Seems like he is trying to sneak around tonight. Ignoring him, Aalyiah goes back to her thoughts and dreams.
“Aalyiah, what the hell are you doing out here? You are supposed to be at the pack house getting everything cleaned up,” Alex yells at her.
Glancing at him with a smirk, “Alex, I have done my job for the day, please leave me alone. I have done the cooking and cleaning, check if you think I am lying.”
Alex pauses, looking at Aalyiah like she is a stranger, “Since when do you talk to me like that? I am your future Alpha. She gave me the respect I deserved!!”
Aalyiah shakes her head, “Future Alpha? I remember when you were my best friend. But that's okay. One day things will change, and I won’t be here forever.
Alex’s face turns red with anger, “What do you mean by that? You aren’t allowed to leave pack grounds! I have forbidden you to leave. You will stay here and take care of the pack with me.”
Aalyiah shakes her head, “Future Alpha, I have plans to leave this place for my birthday. I am just waiting on my wolf to make her appearance so we can leave here and find something better for our beliefs! I don’t want to stay where I am considered less than just because I am a female. I have done everything anyone here has asked of me without complaint. Why must you make it difficult for me to want to leave? You are NOT my Goddess-given mate, that is the only one who can stop me. You think that you can be with me but until my wolf says the magic word, we will only ever be packmates.” Getting up from the ground, Aalyiah turns away and walks off into the woods.
She knows talking to Alex is a waste of her time, but she is tired. It is the same thing every day. Clean and cook, looking toward the future is the only way she can survive here. Alex doesn’t care about her, he is just used to the way his dad does things. Not wanting to argue with him, as he didn’t understand her feelings. He is a male and considered the top of the feeding chain. Little does he know that Aalyiah has been holding back against him for years. Before he stopped training her, she had to be careful with how much power she used in her attacks, not wanting to hurt her future Alpha and risk being imprisoned by his dad for breaking the rules. Having been caught training once, she knew it would be hell to go back to that. They don’t hit or anything like that. You are just put in a cage for a week with only bread and water. No one is allowed to speak or look at you. After you are released, everyone still keeps a distance, not wanting to be known as an accomplice.
Walking along the border, Aalyiah looks towards her freedom. She doesn’t know what the space past here holds, but she can’t wait for the next few weeks to fly by. Although no one really knows when her birthday is, Aalyiah keeps the hope of her wolf showing up each day.
