Chapter One
“That blood looks good on you. Really brings out your eyes.” Cain mocks Allegra. She rolls her eyes and tells him to shut it. “I was messing around.” He defends himself, acting innocent. Allegra looks them both up and down their clothes and skin dyed red from the blood, she sighs.
“You can mess around once we dispose of the corpse in front of us.” She snaps back, dragging the dead body into an alley. “I’ll go burn our clothes, you get rid of the corpse.” She adds, while taking off her blood soaked clothes, Cain does the same.
Allegra takes the pile of bloody clothes and goes into the forest and starts a fire. She lets the fire grow large as she throws the bloody clothes hers, Cains, and the body’s into the fire watching the fire grow and burn like the Fourth of July. Allegra lets out a sigh before going to their house. She grabs clothes for Cain after she puts hers on then walks back to him.
When she gets back to the alley where she left Cain, he’s gone but the body remains. Until she starts to hear sirens she hides as she watches the ambulance take the naked body and cover it up. She automatically knows that her brother was taken by the police but she wants to know if he’ll turn her in.
She knows that what she and her brother did was wrong, but it was a case of self defense and Cain protecting her, yet still she was filled with regret. Allegra drops down to the floor crying, trying not to scream. All she wanted was to pull her brother into a hug and ignore the whole situation but clearly that was not gonna happen. Allegra walks up behind the ambulance with a plan that would surely backfire stirring in her head.
She walks up to the body on the ground and starts letting out the screams she was holding in. Leaving her brother's clothes in the corner she came from. “Papa?” She screams, sitting next to the corpse on the ground. She carefully shakes the body with her bare hands to cover up her previous finger prints. “Papa, wake up!” She screams again. A couple of the medics from the ambulance run over to her and pick her up hugging her. “Who did this? Who would do this?” She cries into the arms of the medic holding her. “I want to see the one who would kill my Papa.” She says, still crying into the arms of the two holding her.
“We’ll drive you to the station, what’s your name?” One of the kind males asks her. She looks up at him with a gentle smile.
“Allegra Brown, that’s my father George.” She says, calming climbing into the ambulance as they move the body into it.
“We will run an autopsy to make sure this is your father.” The other man says, climbing into the ambulance next to her. Allegra didn’t panic because the man was in fact George Brown, her father. When they run the autopsy and get his profile they will know that Cain is in fact her brother and George’s son. There was no need for her tears anymore as she dried them up, calming down knowing she will see Cain again soon and her father is finally gone.
Once they arrive at the police station Allegra hops out of the ambulance without saying a word and she acts mad and storms into the station demanding to see Cain. “I want to see the killer you just brought in for the murder of my father.” She demands. The cops glance at each other as the chief walks in.
"Who are you?" He asks, walking up to Allegra who still has a hurt and angry expression. She sighs and tries not to roll her eyes.
"My name is Allegra Brown. I'm here to see the person you just brought in for the murder of my father, George!" She yells, but says it as if she were upset and angry at the same time. They wouldn't suspect a thing with her newly washed skin and new change of clothes but finding Cain in his underwear standing over a dead body with blood all over him they had to arrest him just hopefully he didn't turn her in.
"I'm sorry, but I can not let you see him." He responds back to her, making her mad.
"You can't let me see him? The man who killed my bloody father! I walked by an ambulance and saw a face on the ground when I realized who it was I ran over to my father screaming and crying to the point the medics had to pry me off of him! So tell me if you were in my position, would you wanna know who did such a thing? How did they feel about killing your family? Wouldn't you want to see them in jail for what they did?" She says, faking every single tear that runs down either side of her face. The Chief was gonna argue with her but he knows she is right and he would be in the same position as she was if it was his father or someone he loved. He agrees to let her see Cain, his first mistake.
He takes her into the room where they can see the prisoner but they can't see them. She watches as they interrogate Cain.
"Why did you kill him? Did you do it alone? Did you know the man you killed? Were you close with…" Allegra gets pulled out of listening to the questions when the Chief taps her shoulder.
"You know him?" He asks. Allegra pauses as tears well up in the corners of her eyes as she fake cries to the point she's screaming but Cain can't hear the sound proof walls. "Allegra?" The Chief pauses.
"He's my… my brother…" She barely gets out before storming off. Once she is in the bathroom she wipes away her forced faked tears and rolls her eyes. How long is this stupid act gonna take before I can get Cain and get out of here? She thinks to herself as she wipes her face with a wet towel. She sighs before putting on a sad face and going out of the bathroom. She walks back in and listens back to Cain.
"He's a self-serving jerk. Yes, I was alone. The man's my father. No, I wasn't close with him. I killed him for being an alcoholic prick who abused me and my sister Allegra since our mom died when we were eight." He says, fully admitting to the murder of their father. "I did it out of self-defense. It was at home he was trying to hit me with a broken glass bottle so I grabbed my pocket knife and stabbed him three times in the lower left abdomen." He breaks it down to every detail. Cain was the one to kill George but Allegra was the one he was about to hit with the broken glass and she was the one who had the worst of the abuse since she looked like Elizabeth. Their mother.
"That's enough evidence for me and a confession. " The officer in the room with Cain says putting him in handcuffs. My eyes widened.
"No! It was self defense! He's all I have please. I know he killed my father but he's all I have." Allegra begged the Chief who was next to her. He smirks and reaches his hand onto her leg. He leans in and kisses her, pushing her into the glass wall as she tries to fight him off. She gathers enough strength and pushes him off of her and looks at him before she screams. A bunch of officers automatically run in. His second mistake. "He tried to grab me! He put his hand on my thigh! He tried too…" She yells, starting to cry. She then stops knowing they all know what she was about to say and she just stares at them with tears starting to well up in her eyes. She backs into the wall crying as they arrest the Chief. "Please don't arrest my brother!" She begs one of the female cops. "He's all I have left…" she cries as she collapses to the floor. She tucks her head between her legs.
The cops still in the room exchange looks. Three of them escorted the Chief away and one remained outside with her brother. One of the female cops bends down to Allegra's face. She wraps her arms around her. "I can make you a deal." She offers with a smile. Allegra looks at her confused. "I can place your brother under house arrest, if you give me an adre-..." She was about to finish the offer but Allegra interrupted.
"No! Please, I'll watch him! He won't do anything else." She responds, cutting the cop off, stopping her from continuing into the house discussion. Their home still covered will shatter glass, scent of alcohol and drugs, stained red of the blood of their father and memories bounce off the wall with their mother. Trapping someone in that environment is just going to make them insane. "Please, you can’t trap someone in a place like that… with those memories… all that shattered glass… It's cruel. He'd kill someone or worse… himself." She explains. She admits that she is technically 18 but Cain is all she has. Allegra has always had her brother. She had two seconds alone before her brother was born so she couldn't bear the thought of being without him.
"Okay. Yet if he lashes out and kills someone again. It's out of my control. I will check in every once in a while to see how things are doing." The female cop that Allegra has been talking to gives in. She smiles and hugs her, thanking her over and over with happy tears in her eyes. How could she not? Her father is finally gone and her and her brother get to live happily ever after together once the house is all cleaned up.
Cain and Allegra get a ride home and start to pick up all the glass when Allegra sighs. "What would you have done if I couldn't have gotten you out, Cain? You could have gone to jail for the rest of your life! Think about it! How could you be so stupid and careless?" She yells with tears in her eyes. "I wouldn't have made it on my own." She admits.
"How did you get me out?" Cain asks, genuinely curious about what happened. She pauses for a minute and thinks back to what happened with the Chief. Her eyes widened out of fear and pure hatred. "Allegra?" He questions, cautiously.
"Long story, but I think I know who's next on our list." She says with her eyes narrow, staring out the door. Cain looks at her in shock by the mere thought of Allegra wanting anyone dead. She never really wanted George dead just out of the way, out of her life. He knows something must have gone wrong, seriously wrong.
"What happened‽" He asked, obviously mad. Who in the world messed with her this bad? He thinks to himself. She sighs and shakes her head indicating not right now and he leaves it at that. "Let's go to sleep for the night." He suggests as Allegra yawns. She smiles and nods before hugging her brother tightly. They walk upstairs to their separate rooms and go to sleep. They get a good eight hours of sleep before a loud banging on the door makes them both jolt up with PTSD from their father throwing glass bottles at their doors to wake them. Cain jumps up and runs to Allegra.
“Cain!” She screams and he can hear the fear and worry in his sister's voice. “Will you go down with me to check the door?” She asks, quickly and softly. She was afraid it was all a dream. That she would go down stairs and her father would be right there and be yelling at her to go get him another beer from the fridge. She opens her door to see Cain waiting outside as they both go down. She walks to the door and Cain nods at her while he grabs the knife from the counter and hides behind Allegra.
“Allegra?” A female voice knocks on the other side of the door and she automatically sighs, out of relief and she opens the door and hugs her.
“I don’t think I ever got your name.” Allegra says, releasing her and opening the door wider.
“Sage Reynolds.” She smiles in response as she carefully walks into the house. She sees all the shattered glass covering the floor and how they walk over it carelessly. The blood stained rug where Cain killed George. The indented walls from the abuse of the kids being pushed into it or things thrown at it. The floor was speckled with beer cans. The scent of weed and alcohol that Allegra and Cain are used to. "I see why you didn't want house arrest." Sage frowns. Allegra nods, who wouldn't? The place looks like hell on earth.
"The shattered glass is from our father throwing beer bottles, the cans are his old ones that I still need to pick up and throw away." Allegra responds with a sigh. "The scent of alcohol is from all the glass and beer, not to mention the weed smell his from when he'd have his 'boys' over at midnight to party, and we'll other things like abuse and…" She pauses and tears start to well up in her eyes. Her pupils dilated down, and her eyes grew a shade of pink lined with red and coated in tears that made her eyes glossy. Cain shakes his head at Sage as he hugs his sister tightly, letting her know that everything would be okay. It will all be okay.
Sage sighed, "I'm so sorry, Allegra, to you as well, Cain. I just came to check in you guys. Let me get you guys hotel rooms and I'll call a friend to pick up the glass and clean the rug." Sage smiles. Allegra runs and hugs her tighter than she was hugging Cain. She never wanted to be homeless so she stayed in the devils trap but she always wanted out of that place, but maybe once it's clean it will feel like home again.
"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" Allegra repeats, still hugging Sage tightly. She smiles and hugs her back as she nods. "Let me help out too! I can do some community cleaning or something." She adds. She has always been a kind, helpful, and thoughtful sibling. Always wanting to help out and do her part in community but she didn't get many chances once the drinking, drugs, and partying got bad. The things that happened to her, the things only the people who did it, Cain, her father, and her knew. The things that shall not be spoken about unless she truly wants someone to know, yet she'd never do it.
She could never get those words out of her mouth again after all she had no way of putting that her father and all his part junkies r***d her at least once a week for too many years to count. The worst part was she was used to it… Once her mother died when she was eight the abuse from George started towards her and Cain but not till she was ten or eleven did the s****l abuse truly start. Thinking about it now felt like a nightmare that she barely had time to wrap her head around before being woken up into reality but in fact it was real and those memories she relives every time she is in that house are real. Allegra just needed a well deserved break and Sage granted that to her.
“How can we ever repay you?” Cain questions while he and Allegra stare at Sage and she just kindly shakes her head from one side the other. The shock purely shined through. Never had they had someone treat them with such respect since their mother died. For the first time in a long time, they were happy and that was enough to make Sage smile for her deed.
“No need.” She says, still with a smile. “Now, come on. I’ll drive you to the hotel you’ll be staying at until me and my guys are done cleaning and patching up your house.” She adds, holding the door open letting them in the car. Then they drive for what feels like hours before the reach where they are going.
