ch1: The Appointment
Amara stood in front of the mirror longer than usual, her fingers resting lightly on her stomach. The soft morning light from the window fell across her face, catching the stillness in her expression. Behind her, Ethan adjusted his cufflinks. “We’ll be late,” he remarked, his tone even, as if this was any other appointment. Amara nodded slightly. “I’m ready.” They walked out together, side by side, but not touching. They arrived at the clinic. Amara sat in the waiting area, her hands folded in her lap, her eyes fixed on nothing in particular. Around her, other couples sat closer with their hands intertwined, exchanging small reassurances in hushed tones. Ethan sat beside her, his focus glued to his phone. Amara glanced at him once, then looked away. “Amara Reyes.” She stood immediately, smoothing her dress. Ethan followed without a word. Inside the doctor’s office, Dr. Aaron Miles didn’t speak right away. He looked at the file, then at Amara, then back at the file again. “I’m sorry,” he began, gently, “but the results are similar with what we’ve been seeing.” “We’ve tried multiple approaches,” he continued, “and at this stage… natural conception is extremely unlikely.” A heavy silence settled over the room. Amara didn’t react, she had learned how to receive bad news without showing it. Ethan leaned back slightly in his chair, letting out a slow breath through his nose. He wasn't surprised or shocked. He was just... done. “There are still options,” the doctor added gently. “We can explore alternatives...” “That won’t be necessary,” Ethan said, cutting in. Amara turned her head slightly looking at him. Dr. Miles hesitated. “I would still recommend taking some time before making a final decision.” Amara nodded slowly. “Thank you, doctor.” The drive home was quiet. Amara watched the city pass by through the window, people moving, cars stopping and starting, life continuing. When they got home, Ethan went straight inside without waiting for her. Amara followed a few seconds later, closing the door behind her. She stood in the living room for a moment, taking in the space. “Amara?” Maya’s voice came from the kitchen. Amara blinked once, then walked toward it. Maya stood by the counter, already pouring tea as if this was her home too. She smiled the moment she saw Amara. “I was waiting for you,” Maya said, setting the cup down. “How did it go?” Amara hesitated before answering. She looked at her. “Same,” Amara finally replied. Maya’s face dimmed a bit, stepping closer. “I’m so sorry. I know how much you wanted this.” Amara gave a single nod. Maya reached for her hand, squeezing it gently. “You’re not alone, okay? I’m right here. I’ll always be here.” Amara held her gaze for a second longer. Then she gave a small nod. “I know.” Ethan entered the kitchen, loosening his tie a bit. Maya glanced at him briefly, then back at Amara. Ethan grabbed a glass of water, avoiding Amara’s eyes. “I have a meeting later.” Maya nodded lightly. Amara’s fingers tightened slightly around the cup in her hand. “You didn’t mention that,” she said, her voice still calm. Ethan shrugged faintly. “It came up.” Maya looked down for a second, then back up. Later that evening, the house fell quiet again. Maya had left and Ethan was in his office. Amara stood alone in the bedroom, the silence wrapping around her like a heavy blanket. She walked slowly toward the bed, sitting down at the edge. Her eyes drifted to their wedding picture on the bedside table. For a moment, she just stared at it. Then she slowly reached out and picked it, her fingers touched lightly over the glass. They both looked happy. Ethan was smiling in a way that made her heart lift. Her chest tightened as the memory pulled her back. The music of their wedding, the laughter, the soft sunlight in that day. "I want a big family, I want to come home and hear little footsteps running around…” Ethan had said back then, his voice low as he leaned closer to her during the reception. “At least two kids. Maybe three… if you don’t get tired of me first." She had laughed, shaking her head. “Three? That’s a lot. Let's start with one and we'll see.” She remembered how sure he sounded. How sure they both were. Amara blinked, the memory fading slowly as she looked back at the picture in her hands.
