I can smell the burning flesh, hear the cries of wounded men, the taste of my own blood coating my mouth, the pain radiating through me like razor blades. Laying there I willed my body to move but it did not obey, I thought of her. The women who brought light into the darkness before it consumed me mind, body, and soul. The women who’s brown wavy hair adorned her head like a soft crown, thinking of her beautiful eyes that saw into the darkness of my soul finding the sliver of light. How I longed in this moment to feel her touch, to taste her lips, to be with my Rosalie.
“Brother!!” Cameron yelled. “Brother, I have you. Stay still.”
I could not respond; all I could do is lay there with tears filling my eyes and thoughts of never seeing my Rosalie again before blackness claimed me flooding through my body.
Rosalie’s POV
It has been 6 days since we arrived at the cabin and I was beginning to worry, the last call I received from Colter was the day we left to come here. I did not know the number on which to reach him, all I had was an address, so I sent a few letters but still I have heard nothing from him, something felt different, wrong.
“Are you ready Rose?” Silla asked.
“Yes, the driver took my bag to the car already.” I said.
“Did you enjoy your time here?” She asked.
“I did thank you for inviting me Silla.” I said with a smile.
“Of course, you and Misty are my closet friends.” She said as she took our hands leading us to the car.
We all piled in and got comfortable for our long drive home. I was hoping to be dropped off first, I needed sometime alone. I needed to contact my Colter. As I watched the world pass us by in a colorful staggered blur, I closed my eyes before drifting into my nightmare.
“Mon amour…” I heard him calling to me.
“Where are you Colter?” I asked staring into pitch black darkness.
“Rosalie…” He called again.
“Please my love, where are you?” I called.
“I love you my Rose.” He said as his voice drifted off into the darkness leaving me there alone.
I was woke by someone shaking me aggressivly. Opening my eyes, I saw the concered faces of my friends.
“You were crying and screaming, are you okay?” Misty asked taking my hand.
“I was having a nightmare.” I said sitting up more.
“You were calling his name.” Silla said softly.
“Are you sure you are alright to go home alone this evening?” Misty asked.
“I will be okay.” I said with my best attempt of a reassuring smile.
“We are here.” Silla said as she gave my shoulder one more squeeze before taking her seat.
“Thank you again so much for this trip it was lovely.” I said as I gathered my bag.
“I hope to see you Sunday for afternoon tea.” Silla called as I got out of the car.
“I will be there, you two have a safe ride home.” I said shutting the door.
Walking through the front door I felt a sense of relief, home at last. Closing the door and locking it behind me before I made my way upstairs to unpack and shower, I planned on putting my favorite pair of sweats on, reading more of Colter’s book with a pizza, all in bed with a sappy movie playing the background that sounded like a lovely plan. I called and ordered my pizza before taking a shower. Just as I finished getting dressed the doorbell rang, I gathered some cash and went to the door. The pizza delivery person was a young boy with a bright smile and warm eyes, I thanked him as I handed the funds.
“Would you like change miss?” He asked counting the large bills.
“No, the rest is your tip.” I said with a smile.
“Thank you, Miss, thank you!” he said as he walked back to his car.
I closed the door and turned the look into place before making my way into the kitchen to get a plate, some paper towels, and a coke from the ice box. Once I was happy with everything, I went back upstairs to the bedroom. Setting the pizza and other items I gathered from the kitchen down on the bed, I walked over and switched the TV on and grabbed the remote. Crawling into bed I turned a silly romantic comedy on as I got comfortable. Then I dove into my pizza and book.
I was on chapter 21 when a piece of parchment paper fell out onto my lap. Setting the book down I picked up and opened it to see the perfect calligraphy written on it by Colter’s hand. It read.
“To my dearest Rose,
I am sorry I had to leave you, but I wanted you to know it was not without regret. As I write this, I already know I made the wrong choice, I should be home with you in bed watching a movie or listening to you read. How I will miss you voice, the look you give me before we make love, the feel of your skin under my fingertips. Rosalie, you have saved me, I hope that one day I can repay you for this gift. Until I see you again please stay safe and know that all my love is with you, all my thoughts are of you and only you. To keep your mind busy, I have left another one of my favorite books for you to read, if you liked I also left the house manifesto for you to look through. Feel free to change anything you would like. I have left a possible staff list for you, the chef is the most desired in this town and he has agreed to work for us if that is what you desire, the butler is a trusted friend who worked for my father, the maid is a close friend to Cameron. Do not feel pressured to make changes, but if you would like to please do so.
Dream of me my beautiful mate and know I will dream of you until the moment you are back in my arms.
With all my love, Colter”
I folded the letter back up and placed it over my heart, I have been blessed with an amazing man and I can not wait for him to return home where he belongs. It was staring to get late and I was becoming tired, pushing the pizza box and plate aside I placed Colter’s book onto the nightstand as I laid down with his letter still clutched to my heart.
Colter’s POV
“You will give me what I want Colter.” A man growled into my ear. “I want the exact location to the King’s camp.”
“I rather die than betray my King.” I said as I spit blood into his face. “You can beat me all you like Hendrick, but nothing will break me.”
“We shall see about that, Bring the other one.” He called.
“Sir…” his man said. “The other prisoner escaped this morning.”
“Useless!! All of you are useless!” Hendrick yelled.
I sat there laughing knowing my brother was safe and he would inform the King of what transpired here insuring the King’s safety. I could see that my captor was becoming increasingly angry which made me laugher harder.
“I will find your weakness and I will destroy it.” He promised before leaving the room.
My mind went to Rosalie, if he found her and hurt her, I would never be able to forgive myself. I would rather die here before a hair on her perfect head was touched by another man. I have been the prisoner of Hendricks for the last 3 months; I knew the King was trying to get me back, but I was moved so often there was no way to know exactly where I would be. But that is okay, it just means they are safe. The only thing that kept me going was the thoughts and dreams I had of my Rose, she was my strength, my guide to the light, my strength to keep going, my will to stay strong, my hope of returning home. As I hung there with chains wrapped around my wrists, I could hear whispering from the hallway.
“We have to get him out of here.” One voice said.
“I have a plan, but we will need some more help.” Another said. “Who can we trust?”
“Paul would help, so would Harry.” The first voice said.
“It needs to be done before Hendrick finds out about Rosalie.” The second voice said.
I could feel the angry growing in me as I growled and started fighting against my chains. The two men from the hallway came into the room with their hands out.
“My lord please stop struggling, you will cause yourself more damage.” The first man said.
“How do you know about my Rose?” I growled.
“I am Jacob, I have been watching you for the King for some time, I have a few of my brothers watching your home to keep her safe.” Jacob replied.
“My lord, we are friends here to help you and to keep your mate safe.” The second man said.
“Please, be still. We will be moving you in an hour. That is when we will take you into hiding.” Jacob said.
“What about Rose?” I asked.
“We will make it look as if you passed until Hendrick is killed or imprisoned to keep her safe.” The second man said.
“Thank you.” I said before passing out.
