I was woken up to someone pounding on the front door, quickly I got out of bed, grabbing my cardigan and putting it on I ran down the hall and to the stairs to the door, I turned the handle and swung it open to see the King, Silla, Camron and Misty all standing there staring at me with sorrowful looks.
“Rosalie may we come in?” The King asked.
“Of course.” I replied already knowing what they were here to tell me.
They all filed in and stood in the foyer area waiting for something to happen.
“I am sorry Rose; he isn’t coming home.” Cameron said looking at the floorboards.
“What do you mean?” I asked holding tears back. “Has he left me for another?”
“No, god no. He loved you with every fiber of his being.” Cameron said taking a step closer to me.
“Loved?” I said.
“Sweet girl, he has passed away.” The King said softly.
I did not hear anything anyone else said, my heart was shattering and the breath from my lungs was taken. I fell the ground as the tears stared pouring from my eyes like strong river currents. He can not be gone. It has to be a terrible joke they are playing on me.
“Rose, I have some papers you need to sign.” The King said as he helped me from the floor. “I know this is the last thing you want to do, but it is important we get them done now.”
“What are they?” I asked.
“He left you everything.” The King replied. “The house, his funds, all of his belongings.”
“Why would he do that?” I asked through my tears.
“Because he loved you.” The King replied looking down.
“Once I sign these will you tell me what happened?” I asked.
“Yes.” He agreed.
“Very well, we can go to the office.” I said leading the way there.
“You three stay down here. We will be back in a moment.” The King said as he followed us.
“If it is alright with you Cameron can come.” I said at the office door.
“That is acceptable.” The King agreed.
We all went into the room and Cameron shut the door behind us. I sat down in Colter’s chair as the other two men sat in the seats in front of me. The King pulled out a large stack of papers and began leading me through them. It was all a blur, a clip from a terrible dream. Something I never saw myself doing. It was solidifying the life of loneliness I was about to endure. How was I going to live in this house without him, sleep in our bed alone, it was all to much to handle. But the thought of selling it was even worse, all I had left from the man I love is this house and all of the things inside of it.
“Have you picked your staff yet?” I heard Cameron ask.
“Colter left me a list of reliable people to hire.” I said in a monotone voice.
“Good, where is it? I will call them for you now.” He said standing up.
I grabbed the letter from my desk and slid it towards him along with the contact sheet. He took them giving me a warm smile before he left the room. I looked back to the King and finished signing the rest of the papers.
“You are now the sole owner of this estate and all that is in it, you are the sole beneficiary of all his wealth which is very vast.” He said handing me copies and deeds.
“Now tell me what happened to him.” I demanded as tears started down my face again.
“He was hurt badly, Cameron found him in the field, and they were heading back to our side to have Colter treated. But they were ambushed and taken prisoner. Cameron was able to escape and make it back to me, we searched for him everywhere, but we were always a step behind. Than we got word from one of my most trusted men he was murdered by the usurper Hendrick.” He said.
“How did it happen?” I asked still crying.
“Rose…” He said with hesitation.
“Your highness, this is crude, and I am sorry, but I need to know what happened to the man I love, I want details and you will give them to me.” I stated sitting up straighter.
“I can see why he loved you so much.” He said as he let out a pent-up breath. “He was tortured, beaten, starved and untimely he met the true death by beheading and his body burned.”
I could feel the rage building inside of me replacing my sadness. “Where is the man responsible for this?”
“We do not know.” He confessed.
“I will find him.” I said standing “And I will end him the same way he ended my mate’s life. Painfully.”
“You cannot, you are human.” The King said a worried tone.
“Not for much longer. You can turn me, or I will find a low life looking for funds to do it.” I stated.
“This is not the way he would have wanted it.” The King objected.
“You are right this is not the way he would have wanted it, but he is no longer here and the man responsible for this is still walking the earth. He must pay for what he has done.” I said walking around the desk. “You are bond by law I am not.”
“Rosalie, this is dangerous.” He said.
“What do I have to lose that is not already lost?” I asked.
“I understand, but if you are to do this, I will proved you with my best men.” He said. “They have been guarding you this whole time and can be trusted.”
“Fine.” I agreed. “But first I need to be changed.”
“I need to ask Silla first, if she agrees I will send a car for you this evening.” He said gathering his things and leaving the room.
I stood there and watched as he and Silla left the house. The rage built in me consuming all the sadness I had felt. I want to feel the man’s blood run through my fingers, I want to hear the screams and cries of his pain, I want him to look into my eyes as I take his life. He will pay for what he has taken from me.
“Rose?” Cameron called pulling me from my thoughts.
“Yes?” I said.
“The Chef, Maid and Butler will be here in 10 minutes. If you’d like I can stay to help you navigate.” He replied.
“Yes, thank you.” I said nodding my head.
“Rosie?” I heard Misty say in a low sad tone.
“Thank you for being here.” I said walking towards her, pulling her into my arms.
“Of course, you are my best friend and I did not want you to be alone.” She said hugging me tighter.
“You are a good friend, both of you.” I said pulling away from her.
“I should tell you what is happening.” I said looking at them. “Let’s go have tea while we talk.”
I walked out of the room and they followed me into the kitchen, taking their seats at the long table as I started the kettle.
“What is going on?” Cameron asked me.
“I am going to find and kill Hendrick.” I said taking cups from the cabinet. “Once the King turns me this evening.”
“Rose you can’t.” Cameron said with a dark expression.
“He needs to be avenged and you can not do it, the King is bound by law and can not help me.” I said looking at him. “What else do you expect me to do?”
“I can help you.” Cameron said.
“You cannot, you must stay here to protect your mate. This is my task and mine alone.” I said sternly.
“She is right Cam.” Misty said rubbing her hand across her mate’s arm soothing him.
“You must stay safe and come home once the task is finished.” Cameron said.
“I will, do not worry.” I said with a reassuring smile.
As I was about to pour the tea a knock came from the front door, I sat everything down and went to answer. I opened the door to find a slim aged man standing next to a short plump man and a thin older woman who all had smiles on their faces and suitcases in their hands.
“You must be Rosalie the lady of the house?” The Slim older man asked.
“Yes.” I replied.
“I am Arthur your Butler, this is Greta your maid, and this is Hank your chef.” He said. “We are your new staff.”
“Welcome, please come in I was just making tea for my guests.” I said stepping to the side.
“I will do that Ma’am.” Hank the cook said.
“Thank you, Hank.” I said with a smile.
“I will close the door Ma’am please go enjoy your guests.” Arthur said.
I smiled and made my way back into the kitchen, I joined Misty and Cameron at the table as we waited for our tea. We had a snack and tea before we showed them the house and their quarters.
“I hope this is suitable for you?” I asked.
“This is more than suitable Ma’am.” Hank said with a big smile.
“Please you all can call me Rose. Even though you are employed by me I would like us to be friends.” I said.
“As you wish Rose.” Greta said making her way into her room.
“Please make yourselves comfortable, I will be in the office.” I said.
I said my goodbyes to Cameron and Misty before hiding away in the office. I decided to finish reading Colter’s favorite book in front of the fireplace on one his leather chairs.
Later in the evening…
The phone began rings, I walked from Colter’s office into the bedroom to answer it.
“Hello?” I said.
“Rose, the car will be there for you in 5 minutes.” The King said.
“Thank you, your highness, I will be waiting.” I answered before hanging the phone up.
I walked out of the office and down the stairs to find my three new employees talking in the kitchen.
“How should we approach the funeral details with her?” Greta asked.
“We shall leave them alone for a few days, no need to cause her further pain.” Arthur replied.
“Should I make her supper?” Hank asked. “I can make a comforting bowl of stew.”
“That would be kind of you, make some warm bread as well.” Arthur said. “Greta make sure she has clean sheets and blankets.
I walked around the corner with a smile. “I will be leaving for sometime this evening, when I return home I will no longer have a human heartbeat.” I stated.
“Yes, Cameron gave us the details of this evening, we wish you the best of luck Rose.” Arthur said.
“Thank you, Hank?” I said.
“Yes Miss?” He replied.
“I would love a warm bowl of stew when I return home if you can manage, I would be grateful.” I said with a smile.
“Yes, I will have that ready and waiting for you.” He said in an excited tone.
“Rose, the car is here for you.” Arthur said.
“Thank you.” I said as I walked to the front door.
It was a short ride, but it felt like it was taking years. Soon I was in front of their door using the knocker.
“Welcome Miss, please come in.” Their maid said.
I walked in, she took my jacket and informed me they were in the King’s office waiting for me. I made my way through the hallways and to the office. Stepping inside I saw Silla sitting in his lap resting her head on his shoulder as he wrapped her tightly in his arms. It made me long for Colter’s touch.
“I am sorry, I did not mean to interrupt.” I said backing out of the door.
“Oh, no do not be silly Rose come in.” Silla said getting up and walking towards me. “How are you my friend?”
“As well as I can be.” I said hugging her.
“Are you sure you want to do this?” The King asked taking his place next to his mate.
“Yes, it benefits you as well.” I said looking at him.
“It does.” He agreed.
“So, how does this work?” I asked him.
“I bite you and then you feed from me, go home and to bed in the morning your transition should be effect and then you will need to feed on human blood to complete it. I will have someone come over for that.” He explained.
“And the sire bond?” I asked.
“Once you have feed come see me and I will release you from it.” He said. “And once you have finished your task, please come find me and I will make you part of my court.”
“Of course, thank you for this. Thank you both.” I said looking at Silla.
“I would hope one would do this for me if I ever lost my love.” She said looking at the King.
“Ready?” He asked.
“Yes.” I replied.
