The door in front opened silently and she saw that inside it was lit only by two great candles at the far end of the room. Seated between them on a dais was a man wearing mandarin robes, his hands hidden in the wide embroidered sleeves. Somewhere a gong boomed as Camilla stood there astonished. Then gradually she found it easier to see in the dimness and recognised who sat there. It was the Prince! “You sent – for me?” she asked and even as she spoke her voice sounded very small and lost.
