CHAPTER 12They reached the river that was the boundary with Westerbalden in about two hours.
As they reined in their sweating horses, Camilla called out,
“The bridge is on our left, I can see the flares.”
“I think we would be unwise to use the bridge,” Hugo Cheverly answered. “We must try and ford the river lower down.”
“Surely they will not yet have discovered that we are missing,” Camilla exclaimed.
“We cannot be sure of that,” Hugo Cheverly replied. “When a footman approached me to say that Harpen wished to speak to me urgently, I was in conversation with the Margrave. I saw a look of curiosity on his face and, when I don’t return, he will be certain to enquire what was the reason for such urgency. After what happened at his Palace, he will suspect that I am with you.”
