Alayna came down the stairs from the shower room and walked straight for Devon. As she handed the makeup to him he asked her " How sure are you of this job, like is this something you really want to do? " " Well not really, but I do need a job to start saving up for a vehicle so I am not living in the woods " " I have told you so many times to come crash at my place, you won't have to pay rent but you will have a solid roof over your head! " Devon said very irritated. " You know why Devon, I want to do this by myself. I don't want to ever have to rely on anyone else again because last time I did that I was hurt way too bad. " Alayna very calmly answered. " I understand that and it would be the exact same as the woods, just warmer, has a shower and toilet, and it is a hell of a lot safer. " " I tell you what, if I get this job I will consider moving in your guest room so that way I can at least pay rent. Then I won't feel like I am a freeloader. " " Deal! Also since the office is all the way across town take my car so you don't scruff your ' cough stolen cough ' amazing shoes. " Devon winks at her. " Awe Devon, thank you so much! I will be sure to bring her back in one piece. " Alayna teases him. Devon hands her the keys to his vehicle and tells her which side of the building he parked on.
As Alayna walked out the door she clicked the unlock button and heard a beep. She looked to her left and seen the cutest little sky blue mini cooper. Since it was the middle of Summer she immediately started the car and pressed the button for the top to come down. She figured her hair would be fine since it was 25 through town and it wouldn't produce too much wind. As she put the vehicle in reverse she her someone yelling her name " ALAYNA! " She looked forward and seen Devon running towards her. " That really HOT drop dead gorgeous hunk of meat left this for you, said something about he needs help at his office and he is willing to give you an interview. " " Thanks a ton Devon. Maybe I will look into it and see if the pay is good! And for the record, he wasn't THAT hot " Alayna winked at Devon while he started to laugh. Devon started jogging back inside so he wouldn't miss any customers coming to the front desk. Alayna continued to back out of the parking spot and carefully started to head to the other side of town. " Do you really want to work at a law office? “ " No. The law did nothing for me and working as a clerk won't help me change anything for someone that is growing up the way I did. BUT it is a start for me to work my way so maybe I can help at least one child " " I would think becoming an officer or even trying for a scholarship to become a social worker would be better. Not that you will ever get that far... " " What are you talking about? Are you saying that I cannot pull myself up from this?!?! " Alayna was starting to become angry at Zyla even though she had given her comfort being able to talk to someone. " Oh god no, you will do more than you ever imagined! But it won't be through the way you think. You are destined to do great things but you have to find your path " " How am I supposed to do that! I don't even have a phone yet to be able to keep track of time. " " All in due time. You are heading the right direction by getting a job and building yourself up. But I will tell you that I have a feeling that you will not get this job. You need to call the number on the card. " " I thought you seen me nailing this interview? " " I said I seen you nailing an interview, and I thought it was this one because there wasn't any others set up. But now with this new information I am feeling something completely different. " Let’s take one interview at a time... " Alayna pulls out the card from the cup holder in the vehicle and looks at it - Elkhorn Security - was written in fancy lettering across the top. Right under that it said " Providing in depth security for any event/person " Alayna flipped the card over and it listed off the services this company offered for their clients. Background checks, event security, personal security, long term security, providing information, and PI services. Alayna thought how working there may help her find out who she really was and where her parents were. No one had ever been able to tell her anything besides that she was found on a church step with a pink blanket and a note pinned to the blanket. When she was 9 years old she wanted to read the note but no one seems to know what ever happened to it so she never got to know what it said. For just a second Alayna thought about just shooting for this company so she could get a head start on her search but she immediately thought that she wanted to get the job herself and not have it handed to her, just like this card was. She shoved the card back in the cup holder before she checked her hair making sure the wind didn't destroy it too much and stepped out of the Mini Cooper.
After two hours of questions Alayna walked out of the law office not feeling the best. When they guy that did the interview heard that she was in the foster system he had a look flash across his face that showed distain. Alayna couldn’t understand why he had such hate for people that were in the system but after that moment he seemed to lose interest in her. As she got into the vehicle she thought about the business card in the cup holder. She decided she would at least drive by the place to see what is looked like. As she put the address in the GPS Zyla said “ Why just drive by? You know that did not go very well so just go in and talk to the secretary. “ “ Because I am not sure that I want to be around that guy all the time. He is a ‘ hunk ‘ as Devon says and I cannot be distracted by my main goal. “ “ Maybe this guy could help you find your parents? He seems to have connections and could probably get you where you need to be faster. “ “ Maybe, but I need out of these heels so for now I think just driving by would be a good thing. “ As Alayna drove through town following the GPS turn by turn she couldn’t help but think that Zyla was right, the quicker she got a job, any job, the quicker she could get out of this god forsaken city and on to her new life. She had one more turn before she passed her destination and she made a split second decision to park the Mini Cooper. She wasn’t sure why but she felt a different pull to park and go in. It was a different pull from other times when she wanted to find her family, that was determination like she was going to find them no matter what and ask them why they gave her up, this was a pull telling her she HAD to do this because it was more than just her family she was seeking with this. She did not understand why she felt this way since she had never felt this way before. “ I’m telling you, go in there now and don’t wait ” “ Oh shush. I just am worried about working here. Like it is so close but I am scared to pull the trigger on this. “ With that Alayna pushed Zyla to the back of her mind, stepped out of the vehicle and started walking across the street. She was very distracted as she decided to jay walk rather than go to the crosswalk, she checked both ways of the street then stepped out into the street to cross. As she was in the middle of the road she kept thinking how crazy she was for even attempting to try for this job. Just then she heard a loud horn and screeching tires. She tried to jump out of the way but she just wasn’t fast enough. She felt the coroner of the truck clip her side and she went flying into the air. The truck didn’t even slow down as it sped further down the street and turn the coroner 3 blocks down. Last thing Alayna seen while lying there was a man that ran to her side with his phone in his hand talking to the dispatcher to get an ambulance headed their way. Or so that is what Alayna thought.
