Chapter 1: The Awakening
The night was cold, silent too silent. Lira Hale’s breath came in ragged gasps as she sprinted through the woods, bare feet slicing over the forest floor. Something inside her chest burned not pain exactly, but pressure, like something clawing to break free. The full moon above watched like a silent judge, pale light illuminating the trees as shadows danced between them. She had no idea how she got here. One moment she was leaving her late shift at the diner, and the next she was stumbling through thickets, her heart pounding with fear… or rage. Or both. “Get away from me!” she cried into the night, though no one was chasing her. At least, no one she could see. The pain intensified. Her knees buckled. She fell hard to the ground, clutching her chest. Her nails dug into the dirt as a scream tore from her throat a sound that wasn’t human. Crack. Snap. Bones shifted. “No… what’s happening to me?” Her skin rippled. Fire coursed through her veins. Her body convulsed violently. She tried to cry out again, but her voice was lost in a howl raw, guttural, primal. Her limbs stretched. Her vision sharpened. Every scent, every rustle in the leaves, every insect heartbeat became clear. She was no longer Lira Hale, twenty year old waitress from Crescent Hollow. She was something else. A wolf. She stumbled back in horror, but her paws hit the ground instead of her hands. She stared into a puddle, catching her reflection: silver fur, glowing violet eyes, she had only seen once in a dream. This can’t be real. A snap of twigs broke the stillness. Lira turned sharply, growling instinctively. Figures stepped out from the shadows tall, powerful, each one radiating authority and danger. Wolves. But not like her. They shifted bones snapping, skin shifting and became people. Bare chested, armed with scars and purpose. One man stepped forward, towering above the rest. Dark hair. Sharp jaw. Eyes like obsidian. He didn’t speak at first. He didn’t have to. His presence alone demanded obedience. She lowered herself instinctively, a growl still low in her throat. “Alpha,” someone whispered. So this was their leader. His eyes narrowed. He took a step closer, his gaze fixed entirely on her. The air between them shifted, thick with tension. His jaw clenched. His nostrils flared. Then he spoke, low and deliberate. “She’s mine.” Lira's heart stopped. She didn’t know what that meant. Not yet. But in his voice, in the fire behind his eyes, she felt something ancient and terrifying Fate. The cell was cold, lit by nothing but the moonlight streaming through a barred window. Lira sat on the stone bench, wrapped in a threadbare blanket someone had tossed at her after she was dragged into the dungeon beneath the Nightfang Packhouse. Her body still hummed with energy from the shift her first shift. Every nerve was raw. Every emotion, magnified. She didn’t understand what was happening, but she couldn’t forget the way the alpha had looked at her. Like she was something precious. Like she was… his. But then, without warning, he had turned away and said nothing. No comfort. No explanation. Just a command to lock her up. Footsteps echoed down the hallway. She sat up as the heavy iron door creaked open. In walked two guards, followed by the same man from the forest. The Alpha. He was dressed now black shirt stretched across broad shoulders, sleeves rolled to his elbows. His eyes were colder in the light, like they’d decided something he wasn’t going to explain. “Stand,” he ordered. She didn’t move. He stepped closer. “I said stand.” Something inside her responded her wolf, obeying the natural authority in his voice. She stood, fists clenched at her sides. “Who are you?” he asked. “I told you my name is Lira Hale. I live in Crescent Hollow. I work at” He cut her off. “Don’t lie to me. You shifted under the full moon, unaided. That takes control. Training. You came from somewhere.” “I didn’t know I was a wolf,” she said sharply. “I thought I was normal.” He studied her. For a moment, silence stretched between them. Then he took a slow step forward. “Do you feel it?” She swallowed. “Feel what?” “The pull. Between us.” She did. Her entire body ached when he was near, but it was more than physical. It was a connection wild, magnetic, unexplainable. Her lips parted. “What is it?” He stepped back like her voice burned him. “You’re my mate.” Lira’s breath hitched. “What?” “It’s a bond forged by the Moon Goddess,” he said, voice cold. “Irrevocable. Eternal.” “So… we’re meant to be together?” she whispered. He met her gaze and for a fraction of a second there was pain in his eyes. Then he said the words that shattered her: “I reject you.” The world tilted. She staggered back, as if he’d struck her. Her chest burned, a sharp, searing pain unlike anything she’d ever known. Her wolf cried out inside her, clawing at the walls of her soul. “You what? You can’t just” “I can,” he said flatly. “And I have. You don’t belong here. You’re a threat.” “I’m not a threat!” she shouted. “I didn’t even know what I was!” He turned to leave. “I didn’t ask for this!” she screamed, her voice breaking. He paused, hand on the door. “Neither did I.” Then he was gone. The door slammed shut behind him. Lira collapsed to her knees, silent tears streaming down her cheeks. Her whole body trembled not from fear, but from the jagged edges of the rejection that echoed in her bones. She didn’t know who she really was. But she swore on whatever blood ran in her veins She would never let him break her again.
