Chapter one:The girl the moon refused to forget
The first howl rose into the night just as the last rays of sunlight disappeared behind the Blackwood Mountains.
It was the sound every werewolf longed to hear—a reminder that the full moon was only two nights away.
In the Crescent Moon Pack, excitement spread through every corner of the village. Warriors sharpened their weapons, women decorated the pack square with silver ribbons, and children ran through the narrow streets laughing about the upcoming Moon Gathering, the grand event where the strongest packs from across the kingdom would meet.
Everyone was preparing.
Everyone except Lyra Blackwood.
Hidden behind the pack healer's cottage, she knelt in the damp earth, carefully picking moon herbs beneath the fading light. Her fingers moved with practiced precision as she placed each glowing leaf into a woven basket.
"You're too slow."
The sharp voice cut through the silence.
Lyra looked up.
Beta Damien stood nearby with folded arms, his expression cold.
"The healer asked for twenty bundles," he said. "You've only gathered twelve."
"I'm almost finished," Lyra replied softly.
He scoffed.
"Almost isn't good enough."
Without warning, he kicked the basket.
The herbs scattered across the muddy ground.
For a moment, Lyra simply stared.
Hours of work...
Gone.
Damien leaned closer.
"I don't know why Alpha Marcus still lets you live inside this pack."
He lowered his voice.
"You're wolfless."
"You can't shift."
"And everyone knows you're cursed."
The words stung more than she cared to admit.
Ever since she turned sixteen, everyone had expected her wolf to awaken.
It never did.
No howl.
No transformation.
Nothing.
To a werewolf, failing to shift was more than unusual.
It was shameful.
Children whispered about her whenever she walked by.
Warriors avoided standing beside her.
Even elders believed the Moon Goddess had abandoned her before birth.
Only one person had ever treated her kindly.
Old Healer Miriam.
"You don't need a wolf to have courage," the elderly woman often told her.
Lyra wanted to believe those words.
But believing was becoming harder every day.
Damien walked away laughing.
"Clean that mess before sunrise."
The moment he disappeared, Lyra slowly knelt and began picking the herbs one by one.
A cold breeze swept through the trees.
For some reason...
It carried a scent she had never smelled before.
It wasn't pine.
It wasn't rain.
It was darker.
Stronger.
Almost intoxicating.
She froze.
The strange scent disappeared as quickly as it came.
"Lyra!"
She turned to see Healer Miriam standing at the cottage door.
"There you are."
Lyra hurried over.
"I'm sorry. I'll finish gathering the herbs."
Miriam smiled gently.
"Forget the herbs."
"The Moon Gathering begins tomorrow."
Lyra lowered her eyes.
"I wasn't invited."
The old woman sighed.
"No one needs an invitation."
"This gathering belongs to every member of the pack."
Lyra almost laughed.
Every member?
She had never felt like one.
Miriam placed a wrinkled hand against her cheek.
"Promise me you'll attend."
"Why?"
The healer hesitated.
"Because..."
She looked toward the rising moon.
"I believe your life is about to change."
Those words lingered in Lyra's mind long after night fell.
Miles away...
Beyond towering cliffs...
Beyond endless forests...
A massive fortress stood beneath the moonlight.
The Dark Sapphire Pack.
Its black stone walls had witnessed centuries of war.
Inside the grand hall, dozens of warriors knelt in absolute silence.
No one dared breathe too loudly.
Heavy footsteps echoed across the marble floor.
Alpha Kael Draven entered.
Six feet four.
Broad shoulders.
Jet-black hair.
Eyes as blue as frozen sapphire.
A long scar crossed his right cheek, making him look even more dangerous.
He stopped before his throne.
Every warrior lowered their head.
Kael's presence alone was enough to silence an army.
"Report."
His deep voice carried effortlessly through the hall.
"The southern border is secure."
"The Crimson Fang Pack has surrendered."
"No rogue attacks this week."
Kael nodded once.
"Prepare for tomorrow."
"The Crescent Moon Pack is hosting this year's Moon Gathering."
One of the warriors frowned.
"With respect, Alpha..."
"They're weak."
"Why should the Dark Sapphire Pack attend?"
Kael's eyes turned icy.
"Because something is waiting there."
The room fell silent.
Even Kael didn't understand why he had spoken those words.
For the past three months, he had dreamed of the same girl.
He never saw her face.
Only silver hair dancing in the wind...
And eyes that glowed like blue fire.
His wolf had become restless.
Every full moon, it repeated the same sentence.
Find her.
Kael hated mysteries.
And he hated losing control even more.
Yet something unseen was pulling him toward the Crescent Moon Pack.
Something powerful.
Something ancient.
That same night, Lyra lay awake on her small bed.
The forest outside was unnaturally quiet.
Too quiet.
Then...
A whisper drifted through her open window.
"Lyra..."
She bolted upright.
Her heart pounded.
The room was empty.
She stepped outside.
Moonlight flooded the clearing.
Nothing moved.
Until she noticed them.
Fresh footprints.
Large.
Wolf tracks.
They stopped directly beneath her window.
As though someone—or something—had been watching her while she slept.
Before she could take another step, a deep growl echoed from the darkness.
Two sapphire-blue eyes slowly opened between the trees.
Watching her.
Waiting.
Then the creature disappeared without making a sound.
Lyra stood frozen.
She had no idea that this single encounter would mark the beginning of a destiny written long before she was born.
