“Yes. I slept late..” He grunted and looked away. I licked my lips, stepping closer until I could touch the desk,"You didn't come home last night..”
He didn't even look up,”Yeah, and so? "
I took a shuddering breath "You didn't call to let me know you weren't coming back. Nor did you tell me where you were. I was worried."
He finally looked up at me, his eyes in cold slits.
"Where I go and what I do are none of your business. I couldn't come back because it was too urgent to do that.”
I gripped the hem of blouse tight, fighting to stay in control. He didn't even try to make an excuse. He didn't feel guilty.
I swallowed a lump and spoke.
"I came to ask for a one day leave"
His lips curled into a sheet.
“Why? Are you sick?” he asked, his eyes scanning me casually
“Yes. I’m not feeling well,” I replied, giving him a weak smile.
He stared at me silently, his gaze boring into mine, then he shrugged, “Okay,” he replied.
I still stood there, not leaving.
He noticed, raising his brow and asked. “Anything else?”
I shook my head, my shoulders slumped, feeling disappointment wash over me.
He didn’t even show a little concern, not even words of comfort. As his wife, I deserved to be cared for, especially now that I told him I wasn't feeling well. But he was behaving like it was nothing to him.
"No." I croaked. "I'll be leaving." With a shattered heart, I walked out.
When I got to the lobby, it was quiet and almost empty. As I walked, I lightly bumped into someone
"Ooops! Be careful." A soft voice called out. I looked up and immediately frowned.
It was none other than my husband’s first love, Annie Maddox
She looked very fragile, the kind of woman anyone would want to help. I didn't feel like getting angry at her was worth it.
“Sorry,” I muttered as I tried to walk away, not wanting anything to do with her. But then she stopped me.
"Ivy." I stopped and slowly turned to look at her. She flashed me a warm smile.
“Ivy, thank you so much for being with Jack for the past four years while I was away,” she said.
If you listened to her words, you would think she was just being nice. But I saw the sneer threatening to slip from the corner of her lips. That's how I knew she was just being sarcastic.
I wonder how she found out that I was married to Jack.
Wait,Why am I asking? He must her told her. I said nothing and only nodded.
“You’re really a good woman,” she continued. "Not many women can do what you did."
That was a barb at me. Again. It's not like I've offended her or anything, so why was she taking a shot at me? If one looked at this situation well, I should be the one with such poisonous barbs at her since she is the one trying to take my husband away from me. I gritted my teeth, turning fully to face her. I held back my anger and smiled at her as I replied with a cheerful voice.
“You don’t need to thank me for doing my duty as a wife,” I said, making it clear that I was his legal wife. "I don't think I should be called a good woman for simply doing what I should do for my husband." I tilted my head at her, daring her to refute me.
Her smile almost faltered but she kept it back on.
I stared at her and felt a bit of pity because she was using crutches, but the situation with Jack made her words feel like mockery.
“Oh? Is that so?” she murmured absently.
Suddenly her handbag slipped from her arm and fell to the ground.
“Could you help me pick it up?” she asked, a sheepish look on her face. “I can’t bend easily.”
"Sure."
I nodded and bent down.
At that exact moment, Annie glanced past my shoulder.
Then she suddenly screamed and collapsed onto the floor.
“My face!” she screamed as she scratched viciously at her cheek. I watched, stunned and frozen, as red scratches appeared on her face.
And before I could react, I heard a yell. “ANNIE!”Jack’s voice thundered behind me,He rushed forward and knelt beside her.
His expression filled with worry.
"J...Jack..." Annie whimpered in his arms as she geld her face with trembling hands. "...my face...she did this... " she looked at me with trembling, watery eyes.
My lips opened in shock as I shook my head hastily, backing away, “Thats not true Jack, I didn’t do anything to her." My trembling voice didn't help.
But it seemed he did t believe me. He looked at me with cold eyes, a growl in throat as he balled his fists and rushed towards me.
“Stay away from her, you mad woman! How could you do this to her.”
"Jack..."
He shoved me aside I fell hard onto the floor,My hand instinctively moved to my stomach
Jack didn’t notice.
He lifted Annie into his arms.
“Don’t worry,” he said gently.
“I’ll take you to the hospital.”
And just like that, he walked away with her, leaving me on the floor behind them.
As I watched them leave, I could only bite my lips and clench my fists. But when I made to stand I felt a sudden pain on my back and fell back. I winced and immediately tried to stand up again but the pain reared back in. Helpless, the first thing I did was to place my hands on my stomach, tears springing to my eyes.
"My baby! Not my baby."
I can't lose my child. We haven't even met yet. I need to save my baby, but there was no one in the empty lobby. Good thing my bag was just within arms reach. I immediately took out my phone and dialed.
"Mandy, please help me."
