Chapter 1
Mrs. Wolfe… you’re three weeks pregnant.” The doctor's words kept ringing in my head like a bell. After four years it finally happened. At first, I didn't want to believe it, didn’t want to hope too much. But after noticing all the signs, I finally test. And it was positive. At long last. “Earth to Ivy?” Jack’s voice suddenly pulled me out of my thoughts. I turned my head-slightly to look at him. He had only a towel wrapped around his waist. Water droplets still clung to his skin as he casually dried his hair with another towel. His tall figure and sharp features still made him look striking making my heart race. Even after all these years,he stillhad this effect on me. His eyes were furrowed as he stared at me while ruffling his wet hair. "You've been standing there for a while now. " he walked past while muttering. "I swear you could dent the wall with your staring." Before I could react, I felt his hands briefly rest on my waist from behind. I jumped a little at the touch, my eyes going wide. He didn'teven turn to look at me before stepping into the bedroom. I let out asmall sigh, following him out. I knew the touch hadn't been out of affection. This was something he did because I pestered him for physical touch early years into our marriage. Our marriage has neverbeen simple. To everyone, I was his personal assistant, no one knew we were married. At first, Jack said it was necessary because of hisposition. As the CEO of the DeBlacks Corporation, he preferred tokeep his private life away from public attention. And I had agreed because I loved him. Back then, I had believed love could solve everything . With a faint smile on my lips, I walked to the dresser and took out the envelope containing my pregnancy report. I held the envelope gently, as if afraid it would crumble in my hands like dust. "I have something to tell you. " I began after taking a deep breath, my eyes focused on him, hiding the report behind my back. He glanced at me indifferently for a second, his eyebrows raised. "Say it, I'm listening." His gray eyes flashed slightly,For a brief moment, I imagined our child. Maybe the baby would inherit his gray eyes. "Anytime now." He grumbled, bringing me out of my musings,My heart beat faster. “Well… after four years of waiting, I’m..” Brrrrrr. The sudden ringing of his phone interrupted me, almost startling me to squeeze the envelope. He glanced toward the bedside table where his phone vibrated, my eyes followed him. Without saying anything, he walked past me and picked it up. I waited quietly, expecting him to finish the call quickly. But instead of answering it in front of me, he grabbed the phone and walked out of the bedroom. I stared at the door in confusion. The clock on the wall showed it was already midnight. Who could possibly be calling him at this hour? Slowly, I sat down on the bed and placed my hand on my stomach ,A soft smile returned to my lips. “Don’t worry,” I whispered gently. “Daddy will know about you soon.” A few minutes later, Jack walked back into the room “I’m coming right now.” he said into the phone without glancing atme. My smile faded when I saw him hurriedly picking up his clothes. He began dressing quickly .I stood up, rushing to standing front of him. “Jack… it’s late. Whereare you going?” I asked He still didn’t look at me. “Something came up. I have to go now” his voice was urgent and distant. Within seconds he had finished dressing and picked up his car keys. “Jack please wait, there's something I need to tell you.” I rushed out. His eyes narrowed as he pushed me out of the way, I stumbled slightly ,"You can tell me later, something more urgent came up." "But... “ "Can you just drop it? " he roared, walking to the door. "I'm sure it’s nothing important anyway. I stood frozen, staring at him, my hand hanging in the air. But before I could say anything else, he had already walked out. The door closed behind him,Silence filled the room. I stood there staring at the closed door. I clenched my trembling fist at my sides, a helpless smile on my lips. I should be used to this. No matter what was happening in my life, Jack always seemed to have something more important. The only time he ever focused his attention on me was when he needed me at night. After that, we returned to being strangers living in the same house. I slowly sat down again, my eyes watering, I pressed my lips together to stop myself from crying. My hand rested on my stomach gently rubbing it. I had believed that having a child might bring us closer. That once he found out we had created a child, for once he would give me the attention and love that I deserved. But he hadn’t even given me the chance to tell him. Hours passed. I lay on the bed staring blankly at the chandelier above me. Sleep never came, no matter how I hard I tried. Finally, my phone buzzed. I picked it up and saw my best friend’s name. I started at the phone fora while. It kept on ringing even after a some seconds. Finally, letting out a weak sigh, I answered the call. "Hey Mandy." “Hey Ivy,” her voice came through the phone a bit breathless. Then she added "Weird question...but are you on crutches now or something? ..” My brow furrowed at her question. “No, I’m not. Why are you asking?” "Well, I think I just saw Jack...."
