Alex struggled to tear her eyes away from Lucas’s smirk. A small smile tugged at his lips as his gaze lingered on her, as though he could see right through her.
Ric Darwin’s voice thundered, dragging her back. “Let’s focus on today’s lesson—an introduction to the history of Dhampirs.”
He began explaining the five trees of Dhampir lineage, his tone both commanding and ominous. Alex scribbled notes frantically, determined to understand.
“The first tree,” Ric intoned, “comprises the original families—powerful bloodlines responsible for forming this Academy. The second, the Seductive Sinners, were wiped out except for La Magra’s line. They used charm as a weapon. The third are the Psychic Dhampirs—mind-readers and empaths. The fourth—Nightmare-Inducing Dhampirs—specialize in illusions and fear. And lastly, the Guardians—protectors of balance.”
Alex’s mind spun. Jesse was part of the Seductive Sinners? No wonder she felt drawn to him. But what about Lucas? She caught him staring again, a playful glint in his eyes.
Before she could ask, Ric’s voice boomed. “Every student here represents one or more of these trees. As time progresses, you’ll learn to harness your gifts.”
He paused, eyes narrowing at Alex. “Some, of course, carry dangerous legacies. Be sure you don’t repeat your ancestors’ mistakes.”
Heat flooded Alex’s cheeks as giggles spread around the room. She clenched her jaw and scribbled faster, determined to prove herself.
Ric concluded with an assignment: pair up with a partner to write an essay on each other’s unique abilities. Luna immediately claimed Alex, and Alex let out a relieved sigh.
“Library or dorm?” Luna whispered.
“Dorm,” Alex said. “I need a minute to breathe.”
As they left the classroom, Alex felt eyes burning holes in her back. Jesse’s intense gaze met Lucas’s in a silent war. Alex felt trapped between them—and she didn’t even know why.
