Tainted Legacy

In the dorm hallway, Alex tried to catch her breath. Her mind reeled from everything she’d learned—and from Lucas’s voice in her head. He’d whispered to her. How was that even possible? She’d barely met him. “You alright?” Luna asked. Alex nodded, forcing a smile. “Just… processing.” They reached the dorm rooms. Luna’s was on the floor above; Alex’s was 504. She unlocked it, sighing in relief at the privacy. One bed—at least she’d have the room to herself. “You’re lucky,” Luna grinned. “No roommates.” Alex smiled faintly. “Perks of having pushy parents, I guess.” Luna laughed. “We’ll start on the assignment after dinner. You’ll learn so much about Dhampirs.” “I hope so,” Alex replied. “I feel like a walking target.” “You kind of are,” Luna teased, then softened. “Don’t worry, I’ve got your back.” Alex’s heart warmed. Maybe she’d made a real friend after all. Just then, a voice echoed in her head. Beautiful eyes… so easy to get lost in them. Alex spun around—but no one was there. Lucas’s smirk played across her mind. Get out of my head! she thought angrily. You want me here, he teased. She slammed her mental walls shut. Not now. “Earth to Alex,” Luna laughed. “Did you see a ghost or something?” Alex shook her head. “Just… thinking.” “Okay, well I’m heading to my room. I’ll see you at dinner?” “Yeah,” Alex said, forcing a smile. As Luna left, Alex sank onto her bed. She thought of Jesse—his bad-boy smirk—and Lucas—his lazy smile that sent shivers down her spine. And Annie, with her icy glare. She didn’t know who to trust—or what her place in this world would be.
